To stream a browser session for replay, capture structured browser events—usually an initial DOM snapshot followed by incremental changes—and send them to an ingestion service over a persistent WebSocket. Store those events with a session identifier, then load them into a replay player. This is not a video stream: the player reconstructs the page from events. For a hosted implementation, rrweb Cloud documents a browser client that uses WebSocket ingestion by default and falls back to HTTP when the socket is unavailable or interrupted. See the rrweb Cloud Browser Client documentation.
The important design decisions are privacy controls, credential scope, delivery during disconnects, storage and access to replay data. A screenshot API is a different tool: it captures a page at a point in time, not a user journey. The practical architectures and trade-offs are below.
What a session replay stream contains
A browser replay is generally a sequence of structured events rather than a continuous recording of rendered pixels. rrweb describes a model in which the recorder emits an initial snapshot and incremental events; a player reconstructs the page and applies those events over time. Depending on what the recorder captures, the sequence can include DOM changes, pointer movement, input activity and scrolling. rrweb’s documentation and project repository describe this event-based approach.

That distinction affects the whole design. You need a browser recorder, a way to transport and store its events, and a player able to rebuild them. A WebSocket can carry events while a session is active; an HTTP path can help deliver data when a socket drops or a page unloads. Neither transport removes the need to decide what may be captured, how long it is retained, and who can replay it.

Choose a hosted, self-hosted or custom path
| Approach | What the cited documentation establishes | Best fit | Trade-off to evaluate |
|---|---|---|---|
| rrweb Cloud | Hosted browser ingestion, WebSocket by default with HTTP fallback, and APIs for recording events, retrieval, replay composition, metadata, listings and hosted previews. API reference. | Teams that want an API-oriented hosted route and explicit browser/private key separation. | Confirm the service’s current retention, access controls and plan limits in its documentation before adopting it; those details are not established here. |
| OpenReplay | Open-source, self-hostable replay stack with live replay, WebSocket capture, privacy features, integrations and APIs. OpenReplay documentation and session replay guide. | Teams that value deployment ownership and are prepared to operate the stack. | Self-hosting gives you operational responsibilities for deployment, storage and maintenance; assess those against your team’s capacity. |
| LogRocket | Managed replay includes Live Mode for active users and diagnostic context such as DOM inspection, logs, network, performance and Redux state. LogRocket session replay documentation. | Teams that want replay alongside integrated application diagnostics. | Check the current data controls, retention and integration coverage for your application before choosing it. |
| FullStory | Browser capture supports session IDs and replay URLs; documentation also covers current-session details and server-side listing of sessions. Getting started, session details and server session listing. | Teams that need to connect replay links or session identifiers to support and server-side workflows. | Verify current access and retention behavior for the specific workflow you intend to build. |
These products are not interchangeable on every axis. Compare self-hosting versus managed operations, socket and fallback behavior, privacy controls, retention, replay-link APIs and the amount of diagnostic context you need. The cited documentation does not provide a comparable latency benchmark, so do not select a service on an assumed replay-delay figure.

- Choose a recorder and decide capture policy first. Configure masking, blocking, sampling and consent behavior before enabling production capture. rrweb Cloud’s Browser Client accepts a public write key; OpenReplay documents framework trackers and private-mode controls. rrweb Browser Client · OpenReplay.
- Assign an identifier. Associate events with a recording or session ID so ingestion, storage and replay refer to the same session. rrweb’s browser client documents a recording ID in session storage to distinguish recordings and tabs. FullStory can provide a session ID or replay URL after capture begins. FullStory session details.
- Deliver events continuously. For rrweb Cloud, the browser client uses WebSocket ingestion by default and falls back to HTTP POST when the socket is unavailable or interrupted, including page-unload cases. Browser Client transport behavior.
- Ingest and retain events. Send events to the replay backend, associate them with the correct recording, and apply your retention and access rules. rrweb Cloud’s API documents ingestion and retrieval operations. Keep private keys on trusted servers; browser code should use a public write-scoped key or a temporary presigned access mechanism. rrweb Cloud API reference.
- Render the replay. The player reads the initial snapshot and applies incremental events in sequence. If you need to inspect active sessions, OpenReplay documents live session replay and WebSocket channels; LogRocket documents Live Mode with diagnostic context. OpenReplay replay · LogRocket replay.
- Connect replays to support or debugging tools. FullStory documents generating replay URLs for a current session or moment and listing recent session URLs for a user. That can connect a replay to an error, support ticket or trace without making the replay itself an unrestricted public resource. FullStory browser getting started · session details · server listing.
A minimal WebSocket event-ingestion example
If you are building a prototype rather than using a vendor’s hosted client, the following example shows the transport shape: a browser records rrweb events and sends each event as JSON over a WebSocket; a small Node.js service appends received messages to a file. It is deliberately a local demonstration, not a production replay backend. It has no authentication, authorization, retention policy, backpressure handling or replay UI. Do not expose it to the public internet or use it to capture real users without adding those controls.
Install the packages
npm init -y
npm install rrweb ws
Run a local receiver
Save this as server.mjs. It accepts a connection at ws://localhost:8080 and writes one received JSON event per line to events.jsonl.

import { WebSocketServer } from 'ws';
import { createWriteStream } from 'node:fs';
const output = createWriteStream('events.jsonl', { flags: 'a' });
const server = new WebSocketServer({ host: '127.0.0.1', port: 8080 });
server.on('connection', (socket) => {
socket.on('message', (data) => {
// This demo only appends received JSON text. Validate, authorize,
// limit and safely partition data before adapting it for production.
output.write(`${data.toString()}n`);
});
});
console.log('Local event receiver listening on ws://127.0.0.1:8080');
Start it with node server.mjs. Keep the receiver bound to localhost for this demonstration.
Record events in a browser bundle
In a browser application with rrweb installed, run the following after the page’s consent and capture policy have been handled. This sample sends events while the socket is open and stops recording if the connection is not open; it does not buffer or retry events.
import { record } from 'rrweb';
const socket = new WebSocket('ws://localhost:8080');
socket.addEventListener('open', () => {
const stopRecording = record({
emit(event) {
if (socket.readyState === WebSocket.OPEN) {
socket.send(JSON.stringify(event));
}
},
});
// Call stopRecording() when this capture should end.
window.stopSessionCapture = () => {
stopRecording?.();
socket.close();
};
});
This demonstrates only the event transport, not a complete replay system: the receiver does not issue session IDs, validate event schemas, serve stored events or render them. For a hosted rrweb path, use its Browser Client rather than copying an undocumented wire protocol; its documentation describes WebSocket ingestion and HTTP fallback. Read the Browser Client setup and configuration.

Protect users and replay data
- Mask and block before capture. Exclude sensitive fields and content at the recorder, not only in the replay UI. Test forms, account pages and any embedded content that could expose personal or confidential data.
- Set consent and sampling rules. Decide when capture may begin, which users or pages are included, and how capture behaves when consent is absent or withdrawn. Requirements vary by geography and data category; the vendor documentation describes controls, not your legal obligations.
- Separate write and read authority. Do not put a private API key in a browser bundle. Use only public, write-scoped browser credentials for ingestion, and issue temporary or presigned read access when an untrusted viewer needs access.
- Constrain links and retention. Restrict replay URLs, audit sharing, and set a retention period appropriate to the data. A session identifier or replay URL should not become an accidental public access mechanism.
- Test awkward browser conditions. Verify cross-origin pages, iframes, WebSocket interruptions and page-unload behavior. Test that the fallback and recorder behave as intended before relying on a replay as evidence of what happened.
Reliability, performance and cost considerations
WebSockets suit continuous event delivery because the browser can maintain a connection while the session is active. They are not a guarantee of delivery: connections can be unavailable or interrupted. rrweb Cloud’s documented HTTP fallback addresses some of those cases, including page unload, but any implementation still needs to define what happens to events during an outage and how it detects incomplete recordings. rrweb Cloud transport documentation.

Troubleshooting common failures
- No events arrive. Check that the recorder starts only after the socket opens, the browser can reach the endpoint, and the ingestion credential has write scope. For rrweb Cloud, follow the Browser Client setup instead of sending to an assumed endpoint. Browser Client documentation.
- A session ends without its final events. An unload can interrupt a persistent connection. Verify the chosen client’s fallback behavior and test on the browsers and navigation patterns your application supports. rrweb Cloud documents HTTP fallback for interrupted sockets and page unload.
- A replay starts but does not reconstruct correctly. Confirm that the initial snapshot and subsequent incremental events are stored in order and associated with one recording. This is a common issue in a custom pipeline when sessions or tabs are mixed; the cited material does not define a universal storage schema.
- Replays expose information they should not. Stop capture, review recorder-side masking and blocking, then test affected pages again before resuming. Do not rely on obscuring data only after it has reached storage.
- Private data is accessible from client code. Remove private credentials from the bundle, rotate any exposed key, and use a public write-scoped key or temporary/presigned access mechanism as appropriate. Keep private read and administrative credentials server-side. rrweb Cloud key and API guidance.
- Live replay is not available. Check whether the selected implementation supports live replay and whether its client and server components are configured together. OpenReplay documents live session replay; LogRocket documents Live Mode. OpenReplay · LogRocket.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I send rrweb events through a WebSocket I already use for application messages?
It is possible to design a shared transport, but the cited documentation does not prescribe a universal multiplexing format. Keep replay traffic separately identifiable, authorized and rate-limited so application messages cannot be confused with captured events.
Can replay URLs be attached to errors or support tickets?
Yes, some managed tools expose session IDs or replay URLs for integration workflows. For example, FullStory documents browser session details and server-side session listing; access to linked replays should still be restricted.
