Zoom Workplace for Windows includes a built-in privacy option named Stop audio and video when computer locks. Turn it on in Zoom Workplace → profile picture → Settings → Meetings & webinars → In-meeting experience, then test it by locking Windows with Windows+L.
Enable Zoom’s lock-screen setting
This is a Zoom desktop-app preference, not a Windows 11 setting. Zoom documents that it stops your Zoom audio and video when the computer display is off or the screen saver starts during an active meeting. Open Zoom’s official desktop settings documentation if the labels in your release differ slightly.
- Open the Zoom Workplace app and sign in if prompted.
- Click your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Open Meetings & webinars.
- Find the In-meeting experience section.
- Turn on Stop audio and video when computer locks.
The option applies to the Zoom Windows client. It is not established by the cited documentation as a browser-Zoom feature, a Windows-wide microphone control, or a hardware-level webcam disable.

Use a low-risk meeting, start a meeting alone, or have a colleague watch from another device. The exact indicators can vary by Zoom release and meeting state.

- Join or start a meeting.
- Turn on your microphone and camera, and confirm that both are active.
- Press Windows+L to lock Windows 11.
- Unlock the computer.
- Inspect Zoom’s microphone and camera controls before speaking or restoring video.
You should verify that your Zoom audio and video stopped after the lock event and that you must deliberately turn them back on. The meeting itself may continue, and you may remain listed as a participant.
What the setting does—and what it does not do
It stops your Zoom transmission
The documented behavior concerns Zoom’s audio and video in an active meeting. It is intended to prevent your microphone and camera feed from continuing while the computer is locked or the relevant display/screen-saver condition occurs.

It does not end the meeting
Zoom does not document this option as leaving, disconnecting from, or ending the meeting. Other participants can still be present, and meeting audio or video from others may remain part of the session.

It is not an operating-system privacy switch
The setting does not promise to disable the webcam or microphone in Windows, mute every other Windows application, or stop every sound produced by the computer. Windows camera and microphone permissions remain separate controls if you need operating-system-level blocking.

Locking is not proof of identical behavior in every power state
Zoom’s description mentions the display being off and the screen saver starting. Do not assume that sleep, hibernation, closing a laptop lid, a disconnected dock, a remote-desktop session, or a virtual machine will behave identically without testing that configuration.
If the option is missing
- Check the client: Make sure you are using the Windows Zoom Workplace desktop app, not Zoom in a browser.
- Check the location: Look under Meetings & webinars → In-meeting experience, rather than under the separate Audio or Video pages or Windows Settings.
- Update and restart: Use Zoom’s profile or settings menu to check for updates, fully quit Zoom, and reopen it.
- Consider administration: A company or school may hide, enforce, or control the behavior. Zoom documents a managed-client policy called Mute When Lock Screen, which can mute audio and stop video after a lock: Zoom’s managed lock-screen policy documentation.
- Confirm the state being tested: The microphone and camera must actually be active before you lock the computer; otherwise there is nothing for Zoom to stop.
Zoom’s Windows deployment documentation also lists MuteVoipWhenJoin. That policy concerns muting when joining a meeting; it is not the lock-triggered setting described here. See Zoom’s Windows deployment settings.

The cited support material does not provide a numeric minimum Zoom version for this feature. Availability can vary with the client release, account policy, and device environment.
Troubleshoot a lock test that fails
- Reopen Settings → Meetings & webinars → In-meeting experience and confirm the toggle is still on.
- Fully quit and relaunch Zoom, then repeat the test.
- Update Zoom Workplace from its profile or settings menu.
- Start with the microphone and camera explicitly active.
- Use Windows+L; minimizing Zoom or turning off only a monitor is a different test.
- After unlocking, inspect both Zoom controls and the participant view to see whether your transmission stopped.
- Test display timeout and screen-saver activation separately if those are the situations you depend on. Treat sleep, hibernation, lid-close, remote sessions, and virtual desktops as separate, unverified cases.
- Ask your organization’s administrator whether a managed Zoom policy controls the setting.
Use manual controls when automatic behavior is uncertain
If the option is unavailable, your device uses a browser session, or the meeting involves sensitive material that you have not tested, use Zoom’s immediate controls before stepping away:

- Click Mute to stop your microphone transmission. Zoom explains the control in its audio mute and unmute documentation.
- Click Stop Video to stop your camera feed. See Zoom’s video controls documentation.
Manual controls are the safest immediate fallback when a lock event, remote session, or managed computer behaves unpredictably.
Do not confuse lock protection with join defaults

The two “Keep” options affect how you enter a meeting. They do not respond to a later Windows lock event.
After unlocking, restoring audio may require permission
Once you return, check Zoom’s microphone and camera controls before resuming. A host can restrict whether participants may unmute themselves, so restoring audio may require host permission even if the lock setting worked correctly. Do not assume that unlocking automatically resumes transmission.
