Windows usually restores a display setting because the selected mode is unsupported, a graphics driver is failing, another application is overriding it, or the display connection changes after restart, sleep, docking, or reconnection. Start with a conservative configuration—Recommended resolution, 60 Hz or the monitor’s known supported rate, HDR temporarily off, and one monitor connected directly to the PC. If that persists, investigate the driver, utilities, dock, cable, and monitor in that order.
First identify what is changing
The correct fix depends on the setting that reverts:
- Resolution: often related to unsupported bandwidth, display detection, or the graphics driver.
- Refresh rate: commonly limited by the cable, dock, adapter, display output, HDR mode, or driver.
- Scaling: may be controlled by Windows, a GPU utility, or an application.
- HDR or Auto HDR: depends on display, cable, graphics-driver, and bandwidth support.
- Orientation, monitor arrangement, or main display: usually points to changing monitor detection or a multi-display profile.
- Game-only changes: are usually controlled by the game rather than Windows desktop settings.
Also note when the change happens. An immediate revert suggests an unsupported mode, driver rejection, or an active override. A revert after restart, sleep, docking, or cable reconnection more strongly suggests driver initialization or display detection changing, although that is a diagnostic inference rather than a universal Windows diagnosis.
1. Set a safe display baseline
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the affected monitor.
- Set Display resolution to the option marked Recommended.
- Open Advanced display in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Advanced display settings.
- Set the refresh rate to 60 Hz, or to the monitor’s known supported rate.
- Temporarily turn HDR off.
- Restart Windows and check whether the setting remains.
Microsoft notes that choosing some refresh rates can make Windows change the resolution to achieve that rate. A monitor may advertise a mode that the complete signal path cannot reliably carry. HDMI or DisplayPort version, cable quality, USB-C dock bandwidth, adapters, multiple monitors, HDR, and high-resolution/high-refresh combinations can all matter.

If the baseline persists, increase resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and scaling one at a time. The setting that causes the next revert identifies the likely compatibility or override problem.

2. Recover if the screen goes black
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Windows resets the graphics driver; the screen may briefly go black, flicker, or produce a sound.

- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Select Enable low-resolution video to start with conservative display settings.
- Alternatively, select Enable Safe Mode or Enable Safe Mode with Networking.
Safe Mode is primarily a diagnostic and recovery mode, not a permanent display fix. See Microsoft’s documentation for the graphics reset shortcut and Startup Settings.
3. Roll back a recently changed graphics driver
If the problem started after Windows Update or a graphics-driver update, try the previous driver first:
- Search for and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and choose Properties > Driver.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart the PC.
The button is unavailable when Windows has no previous driver stored. Rolling back can remove fixes included in the newer driver, so use it as a diagnostic or compatibility step rather than assuming older is always better.

4. Reinstall the display driver
If rollback is unavailable or ineffective:
- Download the correct driver from the PC manufacturer or graphics-chip manufacturer. On laptops, start with Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, or the relevant system maker because graphics switching and power management may be customized.
- Create a restore point or confirm that another recovery method is available.
- Use Safe Mode if the normal display is unstable.
- Open Device Manager > Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter and choose Uninstall device.
- If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device or Delete the driver software for this device.
- Restart Windows and install the downloaded manufacturer driver.
- Restart again, then reapply the display setting.
The exact removal checkbox varies by Windows version and may appear only in Safe Mode. Windows may temporarily use the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, which provides basic output but not the full performance and feature set. Do not remove every display-related device indiscriminately, especially on a hybrid-graphics laptop.
Microsoft’s driver troubleshooting guidance documents rollback, uninstall, and reinstall options. Avoid making registry edits or using a third-party cleanup utility such as DDU the first step; Microsoft’s built-in path is safer for ordinary cases.
5. Find a program that is overriding Windows
Several layers can manage overlapping settings. Temporarily close or disable, one at a time:
- NVIDIA Control Panel or NVIDIA App display profiles
- AMD Software
- Intel Graphics Command Center
- Monitor-management and color-management software
- DisplayLink or dock utilities
- Game launchers, overlays, and screen-recording tools
- Remote-desktop or virtual-display software
- Manufacturer performance utilities
Set the display in Windows, restart, and check whether it persists. The presence of NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel software is not itself a fault; the issue is that multiple tools may enforce different profiles.

If the setting remains stable after a clean boot, a startup application or nonessential service is a likely cause. Re-enable items in groups until the conflicting program is identified.
6. Test the cable, dock, adapter, and monitor path
- Connect the monitor directly to the PC instead of through a dock or adapter.
- Try another suitable HDMI or DisplayPort cable.
- Try another port on the computer or monitor.
- Turn the monitor off and disconnect its power for about 30 seconds.
- Test with only one monitor connected.
- Temporarily disable HDR and variable or dynamic refresh.
- Reapply the setting.
If the setting works directly but not through the dock, the dock, adapter, cable, firmware, or available bandwidth is more likely than corrupted Windows settings. A cable can be inadequate for a resolution-and-refresh combination without being physically defective.

- Set the monitor to its native resolution.
- Choose a standard refresh rate.
- Turn HDR off and restart.
- Update the graphics driver.
- Turn HDR back on.
- If it reverts, test a lower refresh rate or resolution.
HDR can change the available combinations of resolution, refresh rate, color format, and bandwidth. Microsoft recommends current graphics drivers for incorrect HDR or color behavior and suggests reducing refresh rate or resolution in some HDMI situations. See Microsoft’s HDR guidance.
8. Laptop and docking edge cases
On laptops, the internal panel may be driven by integrated graphics while an external monitor uses the discrete GPU. A USB-C dock may use DisplayLink rather than native DisplayPort Alt Mode. Battery power, dock firmware, monitor wake behavior, and whether the display was connected before Windows started can also change the detected configuration.

Test on AC power, update the dock software or firmware from its manufacturer, connect the monitor directly, and test one display at a time. Do not assume one generic NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel package fixes every laptop display configuration; the system manufacturer’s validated package may be required.
When to use System Restore or reset Windows
Use System Restore when the issue clearly began after installing a driver, utility, or system change and a restore point exists from before the problem.
Use Reset this PC only after driver, connection, utility, and recovery tests fail. In Windows 11, find it under Settings > System > Recovery. Keep my files retains personal files but removes apps and resets settings. Remove everything removes personal files, apps, and settings. Back up important data first. See Microsoft’s reset options.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its tools are similar, but menu names differ; Windows 10 users should not assume every Windows 11 path is identical.
Signs the problem may be hardware
Contact the PC, GPU, monitor, dock, or cable manufacturer when the display fails with another cable or computer, repeatedly disappears and reappears, flickers independently of Windows settings, or only works through one port. If the problem follows the monitor or dock to another system, Windows repair is unlikely to be the right solution.
