Windows normally treats filenames as case-insensitive but case-preserving: report.docx and Report.docx refer to the same file, even though Windows can display a preferred capitalization. There is no File Explorer setting that locks capitalization. To correct a case-only rename reliably, rename the file or folder to a genuinely different temporary name, then rename it to the capitalization you want.
Rename a file or folder reliably
A direct rename that changes only uppercase and lowercase letters may not update the name as expected. The workaround is to make an actual intermediate name change first.
In File Explorer
- Select the file or folder and press F2, or choose Rename from its context menu.
- Give it a temporary name that differs by more than capitalization, such as
report-temp.docx. - Press Enter to apply that name.
- Rename it again to the desired capitalization, such as
Report.docx.
Use a temporary name that is not already in the folder. In current Windows 11 File Explorer, use View → Show → File name extensions if you need to see the complete filename before editing it. Menu wording may differ in other Windows versions. This avoids accidentally changing or duplicating an extension. Microsoft documents Explorer’s rename controls in its File Explorer guide; the two-step approach is a practical workaround for case-only renames, not a special Explorer setting.

With PowerShell
For a known file, open PowerShell and run these commands, adjusting the path and final name:

Why case-only renames can be confusing
On an ordinary Windows directory, capitalization is usually not part of a filename’s identity. Windows can preserve and show the spelling used when a name was created or last successfully changed, while still treating names with different letter case as equivalent.
- Case-insensitive: Windows normally treats
README,Readme, andreadmeas the same name. - Case-preserving: It can display the chosen spelling, such as
Readme. - Case-sensitive:
READMEandreadmeare distinct names. This is not the default behavior of an ordinary Windows directory.
Microsoft says not to assume Windows file and directory names are case-sensitive, while documenting case-sensitive behavior as an NTFS capability that can be enabled in specific directories. See its file-naming rules and WSL case-sensitivity guidance. A normal Windows folder generally cannot contain two separate files named only differently by capitalization.

If the capitalization changes back later
First distinguish a rename that never takes effect from one that succeeds and later reverts. If the name does not change at all, use the temporary-name method above. If it changes and then returns—perhaps after a delay, a sync, or a restart—look for another program or system managing that location. These are possibilities to investigate, not proof that any one service is responsible.

Temporarily pause OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, or another service, perform the two-step rename, then resume syncing and watch for a conflict or a spelling restored from the remote copy.
- Check source control. In a Git repository, inspect the repository status before and after a case-only change. Moving between systems with different case-handling rules can make such changes confusing; an intermediate name can help Git record the change.
- Check scripts and automation. Look for PowerShell, batch, Python, backup, download, or media-organizing jobs that convert names to a standard case.
- Check the application that owns the files. Photo catalogs, music managers, development tools, and archive utilities may rename files as part of their own organization or extraction features.
- Consider where the folder lives. A NAS, SMB share, removable drive, or cloud-backed folder may be governed by a remote server or file system with different naming behavior. Try the rename through the system that owns the share if local Explorer cannot apply it consistently.
Also close applications using the file. A lock, insufficient permission, or sync activity can prevent a rename. If the operation fails, note the full error message before trying another method.

Renaming many files
For a few items, Explorer’s two-step method is easiest. For a larger set, use a preview and check that every target name is unique before applying changes.
- PowerRename: Microsoft’s PowerToys utility offers an interactive bulk-renaming interface with search-and-replace and regular-expression options. It is useful for a naming pattern, but it does not change how Windows treats capitalization. See the PowerRename documentation.
- PowerShell: Use it when you need a repeatable transformation. Preview the proposed old and new names first, back up important files, and check for collisions before renaming. Microsoft’s PowerShell case-sensitivity documentation explains shell behavior; do not confuse that behavior with a directory’s naming rules.
For example, a lowercase conversion must account for collisions such as Photo.JPG and photo.jpg. On an ordinary case-insensitive directory, those names cannot safely become two separate lowercase targets. Do not run a bulk script recursively until you have planned for duplicate destinations and reviewed exactly which files it will touch. Converting the complete filename also converts the extension, so preserve extensions deliberately if that is not wanted.
Advanced: case-sensitive NTFS directories
If you work with Linux or WSL files that genuinely need two names differing only in capitalization, Windows supports a per-directory case-sensitivity setting on NTFS. This is an advanced compatibility feature, not a fix for a routine Explorer rename. Microsoft documents support starting with Windows 10 build 17107, along with the requirements and limitations.

fsutil.exe file setCaseSensitiveInfo "C:PathFolder" disableThese commands require an NTFS directory and elevated permissions. The directory generally must be empty before you can change the setting; when necessary, create a new directory, set its behavior, then copy files into it. Follow Microsoft’s case-sensitivity instructions for the applicable Windows and WSL setup.
Enabling case sensitivity can break assumptions made by Windows applications that expect paths to be case-insensitive. Some programs may fail to find a file if they request it with different capitalization, and files differing only by case may not be reliably distinguishable in every Windows application. Use this only when the workflow requires it and the programs accessing the directory are compatible. Microsoft’s technical explanation provides further context.

- Check shortcuts, scripts, imports, or project references that may use the old path. The file’s contents are not changed by a rename, but software that refers to its exact path can be affected.
