To stop Microsoft Edge’s optional background activity on Windows, open edge://settings/system/manageSystem and turn off both Startup boost and the setting for continuing to run background extensions and apps after Edge closes. Then restart Windows. If Edge still opens at sign-in, disable it separately in Windows Startup apps; if it reappears after that, check Windows’ restartable-app setting, Edge apps and extensions, and any organization policies.

These controls address different behaviors, so the right fix depends on whether Edge processes remain after you close the browser or a window opens when you sign in. The main instructions below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11.

What “running in the background” can mean

Closing every Edge window does not necessarily mean every msedge.exe process has exited. Edge uses multiple processes for browser functions such as tabs, extensions, and graphics, and optional features can keep some activity going after the last window closes. Startup boost keeps core processes ready so Edge can open faster; background mode lets background apps and extensions continue after Edge closes. Windows startup and sign-in restoration are separate mechanisms.

A process in Task Manager by itself does not prove that Edge is malfunctioning. If your goal is to stop optional background activity, begin with Edge’s own system settings. If your symptom is a visible Edge window opening at sign-in, also use the Windows startup controls below.

Turn off Edge background mode and Startup boost

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and enter edge://settings/system/manageSystem in the address bar.
  2. Turn off Startup boost.
  3. Turn off the setting whose wording refers to continuing to run background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed. The label can vary by Edge version; look for the terms background, extensions, or apps.
  4. Close Edge. If the processes remain, restart Windows before checking again.

You can also reach the settings through Settings and more (…) > Settings > System and performance. Microsoft documents Startup boost as keeping core Edge processes ready in the background; it describes the background-mode policy separately as allowing Edge processes and background apps to continue after the last browser window closes. Microsoft’s Startup boost guidance and its BackgroundModeEnabled policy documentation explain these distinct controls.

Disabling these options stops the corresponding optional behavior; it does not remove Edge. Edge may take longer to open, and background notifications or extension activity may stop. It does not delete bookmarks, history, or passwords. Microsoft says Startup boost has a limited resource impact, not zero impact.

Stop Edge from opening when you sign in to Windows

Windows Startup apps controls whether an app launches at sign-in. This is separate from Edge’s background-mode and Startup boost settings.

Alternatively, right-click Start, open Task Manager, select Startup apps, select Microsoft Edge, and choose Disable. Microsoft documents both routes for configuring startup applications: Configure startup applications in Windows. Task Manager’s startup-impact rating concerns startup impact; it is not a measurement of Edge’s ongoing memory use.

Prevent Windows from restoring Edge after sign-in

If Edge reopens after a restart even though it is disabled in Startup apps, Windows may be restoring restartable apps from the previous session. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and turn off Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign in. This affects Windows’ restartable-app behavior generally, not only Edge. See Microsoft’s instructions to stop Microsoft Edge from starting automatically.

Check Edge apps and extensions that can keep activity going

Review installed Edge apps

A site installed as an Edge app can have its own device-login startup setting. Enter edge://apps, select Details for a relevant app, then turn off Auto-start on device login. Uninstall apps you no longer use if appropriate. Microsoft describes managing, auto-starting, and removing Edge apps here: Install, manage, or uninstall apps in Microsoft Edge.

Isolate extensions without removing them all

Extensions that provide notifications, messaging, monitoring, downloads, or other background functions may contribute to activity. To test whether an extension is involved:

  1. In Edge, select Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Turn off all extensions temporarily, then close Edge and check whether its processes stop.
  3. If the behavior changes, turn extensions back on one at a time or in small groups until you identify the one associated with it.
  4. Keep, remove, or leave disabled only the extension based on whether you need its function and trust its publisher.

Microsoft provides instructions for turning off or removing Edge extensions. Its Startup boost guidance also notes that certain extensions that open browser windows can conflict with Startup boost.

Check whether Edge has stopped

  1. Close all Edge windows and wait about 30 seconds.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and look under Processes for Microsoft Edge or msedge.exe.
  3. After a Windows restart, check Startup apps if Edge opens visibly at sign-in.

If a process appears briefly, that alone does not show that Edge is ignoring the settings; a link, web app, update, or integrated component can start Edge-related activity. If a process is stuck and you need to end it, use Task Manager’s End task as a temporary measure. In Command Prompt, taskkill /IM msedge.exe /F forcibly terminates all processes named msedge.exe; it can interrupt active downloads or unsaved work and does not prevent Edge from starting again.

If settings are missing, locked, or keep reverting

First confirm you are using Edge on Windows and the system settings page at edge://settings/system/manageSystem. Labels and availability can vary by version, channel, and device management. To check for an update, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge; Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking for updates when Edge is not working as expected: What to do if Microsoft Edge isn’t working.

Then enter edge://policy and look for BackgroundModeEnabled, StartupBoostEnabled, or LaunchEdgeOnWindowsStartupEnabled. These are administrator policy names for background mode, Startup boost, and visible launch at Windows startup. Microsoft lists Windows support for StartupBoostEnabled beginning with Edge version 88, and lists Windows support for LaunchEdgeOnWindowsStartupEnabled beginning with Edge version 152. The latter policy’s availability therefore depends on having a supported Edge version. See Microsoft’s documentation for StartupBoostEnabled and LaunchEdgeOnWindowsStartupEnabled.

On a work- or school-managed device, an organization can enforce settings through policy or device management. Avoid editing registry policy values as a routine fix: a local change may be ineffective or overwritten, and may conflict with your organization’s configuration. Ask the administrator to change an enforced setting.

Windows background-app permissions are only a secondary check

On Windows 11, supported apps may offer a background permission at Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [app] > Advanced options > Background app permissions; choose Never where available. Microsoft cautions that traditional desktop apps may not appear in this list and are not controlled by this setting. It may therefore not control the Edge desktop application. See Microsoft’s explanations of Windows background apps and your privacy and managing background activity for apps in Windows.

macOS and mobile devices

The Edge settings above are Windows instructions. Microsoft’s policy documentation lists Startup boost and background mode as unsupported on macOS, Android, and iOS. On a Mac, quit Edge with Microsoft Edge > Quit Microsoft Edge or Command + Q, and check System Settings > General > Login Items if Edge launches at login. Review Edge extensions and installed web apps if activity continues; these macOS steps are not the Windows background-mode controls.
