To stop recurring “Background Items Added” alerts, disable the responsible app under Apple menu → System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → App Background Activity. Check Open at Login too if the app starts automatically. Turning off the app’s notifications only hides alerts; it does not necessarily stop its background service.
First, identify which alert you’re seeing
Similar-looking alerts can describe different things: an app registering a helper, an app continuing to run after you quit it, a system extension warning, or an ordinary notification from an app. The right fix depends on which one you have.
- “Background item added” or similar: An app or one of its helpers has registered background activity. macOS provides controls for this in Login Items & Extensions.
- An app is running in the background: The app may still be active after you close its window or quit it. Apple documents background-process alerts and controls in its developer guidance.
- A system extension is blocked or needs approval: This is different from an ordinary app login item. Identify the developer and update the app before changing security settings. See Apple’s guidance on system-extension alerts.
- An ordinary app notification: You can silence it in Notifications settings, but doing so will not necessarily stop the app’s helper.
A background item is not, by itself, evidence of malware. Cloud storage, backup, VPN, password-manager, security, printer, audio, display, and update software can all need background services. Decide whether you want the named app to keep doing its job before switching it off.

- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select General → Login Items & Extensions.
- Under App Background Activity, find the app named in the alert and switch it off.
- Also review Open at Login. If the app or a related item is listed there and you do not want it to launch when you sign in, select it and click the Remove button.
These lists do different jobs. App Background Activity controls whether an app may do background work, such as checking for updates or syncing, when its main app is not open. Open at Login controls items that open automatically when you log in. Removing an item from the latter does not uninstall the app.

Turning off background activity can mean that syncing, backups, automatic updates, VPN connections, monitoring, or menu-bar features do not work until you open the app again. Avoid switching off everything just to clear a notification. Apple describes the controls and extension categories in its Login Items & Extensions guide.
Hide notifications without stopping the service
If the background service is useful but an ordinary notification from the app is not, go to System Settings → Notifications → [app] → Allow notifications and turn it off. This is a notification-only workaround: the app may continue running, syncing, or checking for updates. Focus or Do Not Disturb can reduce interruptions temporarily, but likewise does not change the item’s background permissions. There is no general switch documented by Apple that suppresses every background-item alert while leaving all background activity enabled. If the alert returns, address the item or the app that is registering it rather than assuming notification settings will disable the service.

If the alert keeps returning
Use this sequence before attempting manual file cleanup:
- Note the exact name and wording. The alert may name a helper or updater rather than the main app.
- Check both lists. Turn off the relevant entry in App Background Activity and remove an unwanted automatic launch from Open at Login. Also review Added Extensions, Drivers, Network Extensions, Endpoint Security Extensions, and other relevant categories if they appear.
- Quit the app and restart the Mac. A restart can reveal whether the setting took effect. Use Command-Q to quit an app; closing its window alone may leave it running.
- Update the app. An update may fix a bug that repeatedly registers a helper. Check the app’s own settings for options such as “launch at login,” “run in background,” or “start helper.”
- Check what reinstalls it. An updater, package manager, another app, or a work/school management profile may be restoring the item. On a managed Mac, contact IT if the control is unavailable or the item returns.
- Uninstall if you no longer need it. Prefer the developer’s uninstaller or removal instructions, then check Login Items & Extensions again after restarting.
If the item is not visible in the settings pane, it may be listed under a different component name, belong to an extension, be managed by your organization, or have been installed system-wide. Do not start by deleting arbitrary files from ~/Library/LaunchAgents or /Library/LaunchDaemons; manual removal can leave software broken or create orphaned items.

If an app keeps reopening
Automatic reopening can come from a login item, the app’s own preferences, or other software it installed. Remove the relevant entry from Open at Login, check the app’s settings, and, if offered during shutdown or restart, clear Reopen windows when logging back in. You can also enable Close windows when quitting an application in System Settings → Desktop & Dock. Apple’s guide to preventing apps and windows from reopening covers these causes. If you suspect a third-party startup item, Safe Mode can help test whether it is involved; consult Apple’s instructions for your Mac model.
Some apps remain active in the menu bar even after their windows close. Use the app’s menu-bar controls to pause or quit its helper, or quit the app with Command-Q. On macOS 26, an app that continues background work after it is quit may trigger a separate alert or prompt about future activity; the wording and controls can differ by app and macOS version.

When an item may be unsafe—or simply stale
Investigate before disabling or removing an unfamiliar item if it has no obvious app in Applications, has an unexpected name, reappears after removal, or appeared after installing pirated software, a fake update, or an untrusted utility. Malware can use persistence mechanisms, including background items, but an alert alone does not establish that an item is malicious. Objective-See’s 2024 macOS malware report documents examples of persistence techniques.
If you suspect unwanted software, identify and remove the parent app using trustworthy removal instructions, update macOS, and review installed apps and browser extensions. Consider a reputable malware scan. If you have evidence that credentials may have been exposed, change important passwords from a trusted device; seek professional or organizational IT help for a serious incident.
A yellow warning triangle beside a login item is not necessarily a security warning. Apple says it can indicate that the item was moved or deleted and will no longer open automatically—a stale reference after an app change or uninstall.

System extensions and macOS background updates are different
System extensions can support VPN filtering, endpoint security, hardware, and other system-level features. If one triggers an alert, identify its developer and update the app; check whether the developer offers a modern replacement. Do not weaken Startup Security settings solely to silence an alert. Older kernel extensions are a separate, legacy mechanism, and Apple advises users to consider updated software or alternatives where available. Start with Apple’s system-extension guidance.
macOS also installs certain security improvements, security-configuration data, malware protections, and system resources in the background. These are not the same as a third-party app’s login item. Do not disable system security updates to address an app-specific alert; Apple explains background updates in macOS.
Which macOS versions use these controls?
On macOS Ventura 13 and later, the settings app is called System Settings, and the relevant controls are under General → Login Items & Extensions. The precise alert wording, available categories, and options can vary with macOS version, app, language, and whether the Mac is managed. In macOS 26, continuing background processes may have their own notification or future-activity prompt; do not confuse that with an ordinary app notification or a blocked system-extension warning.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Check General → Login Items & Extensions and disable only the app’s background activity you do not need. Remove unwanted startup items separately. Muting notifications can hide alerts, but it does not reliably stop the service.
