To open Microsoft Edge in InPrivate mode every time you use a particular shortcut, add -inprivate to that shortcut’s target. Windows 10 Edge does not have a standard Settings switch that makes every kind of Edge launch InPrivate. A changed shortcut affects only launches through that shortcut; links from other apps and other Edge icons may still open normally.
Create a dedicated InPrivate shortcut
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select New > Shortcut.
- Enter the path to Edge’s executable, followed by a space and
-inprivate. Common paths include:"C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" -inprivateor:
"C:Program FilesMicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" -inprivate - Select Next, name the shortcut something recognizable, such as Microsoft Edge InPrivate, then select Finish.
The installation path can vary. If neither example works, locate msedge.exe on your PC and use its full path. Microsoft Q&A guidance uses the -inprivate launch switch; this is a shortcut-based workaround, not a consumer Settings toggle (Microsoft Q&A).
Add InPrivate mode to an existing shortcut
- Right-click the Edge shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, click the Target field and move to the end of its contents.
- Type one space, then
-inprivate. Leave the executable path and its quotation marks intact. - Select Apply, then OK. Close any open Edge windows and test by launching this shortcut.
A correct target looks like this:
"C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" -inprivateThe switch must be outside the closing quotation mark, and there must be a space before it. For example, msedge.exe-inprivate is missing the space, while putting -inprivate inside the executable’s quotation marks makes the target incorrect.

When it works, Edge opens an InPrivate window. Look for the visible InPrivate indicator in the window.

Use the shortcut from the taskbar or Start
Changing a desktop shortcut does not necessarily change a separately pinned taskbar icon, Start shortcut, Windows Search result, or Edge link opened by another app. Test the desktop shortcut first. If the taskbar icon still opens a regular window, close Edge, unpin the old icon, launch Edge from your configured shortcut, and pin the running instance if Windows offers that option. Pinning behavior can vary by Windows build and installation.
For a URL opened from another program, Windows may invoke the registered Edge app directly instead of your modified shortcut. The reliable simple option is to open the InPrivate shortcut and paste the URL into that window. You can also make a separate shortcut or script for a specific workflow. Avoid editing URL-association registry commands as a casual fix: it can affect all Edge links, may be changed by updates or repairs, and is harder to undo safely.

If Edge opens a regular window
- Check that you launched the shortcut you edited, not another Edge icon or search result.
- Verify that the target ends with a space and
-inprivate, outside the closing quote. - Confirm the target points to
msedge.exeand that you selected Apply. - Close all Edge windows and test again. An existing Edge process or window can make it unclear which launch point was used.
- If this is a work, school, or family-managed PC, check
edge://policyfor policies that control InPrivate. Contact the administrator if the device is managed rather than trying to override its policy.
If necessary, create a new dedicated shortcut instead of changing a system-managed or pinned one. To undo the change, remove the space and -inprivate from the target and apply it, or delete the dedicated shortcut.
What InPrivate does—and does not—keep private
InPrivate limits what Edge retains for that browsing session. Microsoft says Edge does not retain the session’s browsing history, download history, cookies and site data, or form-fill data after all InPrivate windows are closed. But files you download remain on the device, and favorites you add remain saved. InPrivate tabs are not restored at startup, so this workflow trades away session restoration (Microsoft Edge privacy information).

InPrivate is not anonymity, encryption, or malware protection. Websites, an employer or school, and an internet service provider may still be able to observe activity. It mainly limits browser data saved locally for the session; it does not hide your network activity from those parties.
Extensions and other convenience trade-offs
Extensions do not automatically run in InPrivate. To allow one, open edge://extensions, select Details for that extension, and enable Allow in InPrivate if the option is available. Microsoft notes that this permission is set by the user rather than granted automatically through Group Policy (Microsoft guidance on extensions in InPrivate). Allowing an extension can reduce privacy, depending on its permissions and data practices.

Because session data is not retained, InPrivate may be less convenient for saved site state and form filling, and closing the InPrivate windows ends that session’s browsing context. Downloaded files and saved favorites are exceptions: they remain. Do not assume that a download is erased just because its entry disappears from browser history.

Work, school, and kiosk-managed PCs
Administrators can control whether InPrivate is available through supported Edge policies. Microsoft documents an AllowInPrivate policy for supported Windows editions, including Windows 10 version 1511 and later. Its documented policy path is Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Edge (Windows policy CSP documentation). Group Policy Editor is not included in every Windows 10 edition, and organizational management can override local behavior.

Do not rely on the documented InPrivateModeAvailability “Forced” value as a universal Windows 10 solution. Although Microsoft lists values for enabled, disabled, and forced, its current support matrix marks Forced as unsupported on Windows, and the policy index lists it as deprecated (policy details; Edge policy index). For an ordinary PC, use the dedicated shortcut unless your organization has separately tested a management configuration.
Edge kiosk mode is a different option for managed public-facing devices: Microsoft documents kiosk experiences that run in an InPrivate session for signage or limited public browsing. Kiosk mode is restrictive and is not a replacement for a normal personal-computer shortcut (Configure Microsoft Edge kiosk mode).
