To split one WordPress post into numbered pages, insert a Page Break block wherever a new page should begin. In the Classic Editor, insert <!--nextpage--> at each break. Your theme must render the in-post navigation for readers to see page numbers or next/previous links.
Split a post with the Block Editor
The block editor has a built-in Page Break block for creating a multi-page post or page.
- Open the post or page in the WordPress editor.
- Place the cursor at the point where the next page should start.
- Open the Block Inserter, search for Page Break, and insert it.
- Alternatively, add a new Paragraph block, type
/page-break, and press Enter. - Repeat the insertion at every intended division.
- Preview or view the published content and check that each section starts in the right place and that navigation is visible.
Each Page Break block adds another number to the post’s multi-page navigation. WordPress documentation uses long tutorials and chapter-based content as typical reasons to divide a post this way.

Split a post in the Classic Editor
In the Classic Editor, place the following marker in the post content wherever a new page should begin:

You can use the marker any number of times. For example, content arranged as three sections would contain two markers:

WordPress divides the content at those markers. The resulting page links are generated when the theme calls wp_link_pages() or the older link_pages() function.

Make sure the theme outputs page navigation
The break itself does not guarantee that visitors will see links. In a classic theme, the single-post template must call wp_link_pages() inside the loop that displays the post. A typical placement is immediately after the post content:

The exact markup and location can differ by theme. If the post changes pages but no numbers or next/previous controls appear, inspect the theme’s single-post template or ask the theme author whether in-post pagination is supported.

Choose the correct type of WordPress pagination

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect page links
No page numbers or next links appear
- Confirm that you inserted a Page Break block or an exact
<!--nextpage-->marker, rather than a normal separator or Read More block. - Check the single-post template for
wp_link_pages()inside the post loop if you use a classic theme. - Preview the post with the active theme, because navigation output is controlled by the theme as well as the content.
The post splits, but the divisions are in the wrong places
- Move each Page Break block so it sits immediately before the heading or paragraph that should begin the next page.
- In the Classic Editor, ensure markers are on their own content boundaries and that no characters were added inside the comment syntax.
A page builder ignores the Classic Editor marker
Page builders can implement post content differently. A WordPress support response concerning Elementor reports that the Classic Editor tag is not handled in the same way and suggests manual links or third-party methods. That is community guidance, not a universal compatibility guarantee. Check the documentation and tested behavior for the exact builder and theme versions on your site before redesigning the post.
Practical decisions before publishing
- Divide at meaningful stopping points: start each page with a clear subsection, chapter, or step rather than cutting in the middle of an explanation.
- Preview every page: verify headings, images, embeds, and navigation at each boundary.
- Use one method consistently: the Page Break block is the straightforward choice for block-editor content; the marker is the content-level method for Classic Editor workflows.
- Test the live theme: navigation depends on template output, and page-builder integrations may vary.
What this feature does—and does not do
WordPress’s built-in feature creates a multi-page experience inside a single post or page; it does not create separate posts. The content remains one entry in the editor, while WordPress renders its sections as paginated views. The Query Loop Pagination block and a same-page expand/collapse control solve different problems and should not be substituted for a Page Break.
