To split a WordPress post or page title, first decide whether you want it to wrap naturally or break at a specific word. Natural wrapping is a matter of the title’s width and typography. A precise break needs a theme- or markup-specific solution: the core Title block has no documented manual line-break control, and typing <br> into the ordinary title field is not a dependable method.

Choose between natural wrapping and a forced break

If a title can break wherever the available space and font require, adjust its width or typography in your theme or editor. The title remains ordinary text, and its line breaks can adapt to different screen widths.

If it must break after a particular word, you need a presentation change that targets the title’s output. The right approach depends on your theme, template, and editor; WordPress does not document a universal setting for inserting a chosen break.

Use the Title block’s styling options when available

In a block theme, the Title block displays the post or page title. Its documented advanced settings include an additional CSS class and Additional CSS, which can help target that block’s presentation. The documentation does not provide universal CSS for forcing a break, so the selector and styling depend on the markup and theme. See WordPress’s Title block documentation.

For a change limited to one title, use a class or template approach scoped to that instance if your theme supports it. A broad rule may affect every title using the same block or template. Check the result on both the page and other templates before applying a site-wide style.

Make the layout responsive if the break should vary by screen

WordPress documents responsive styles for block themes running WordPress 7.1 or later. Supported style settings can have breakpoint-specific overrides, and themes can customize the viewport widths. This is not documented as a direct manual-line-break feature; it is a way to vary supported styling by screen size. See WordPress’s styles overview.

If you need a fixed break on desktop but a different layout on mobile, confirm that your theme and the specific style property support the responsive controls you intend to use. Do not assume that an example breakpoint applies to every theme.

Why adding <br> to the title field is not reliable

A WordPress support-forum reply describes using <br> where unfiltered HTML is permitted, but also says HTML cannot be added to the title through the block editor. Whether markup is accepted depends on the site’s permissions and setup; do not assume that entering a tag in the regular title field will create a line break. See the WordPress support discussion.

Check that you are changing the visible heading

The heading shown in the page content is different from the HTML <title> in the document head, which is commonly used for the browser tab and search-result title. WordPress’s wp_title filter applies to the document’s HTML title, not the visible post, page, or category heading. Changing that filter will not generally split the heading on the page. See the WordPress developer reference for wp_title.
