To split a multi-page PDF into single-page PDFs, choose a tool’s split at every page option or extract the pages as separate files. PDFsam Basic offers an every-page split for Windows, macOS, and Linux; Adobe Acrobat desktop has an “Extract pages as separate files” option. Keep the original file, choose an output folder, then check that the number of new PDFs matches the source page count and that each file contains one page.
Choose the right kind of split
“Split a PDF” can mean several different things. Before starting, decide whether you want one file per page or a smaller number of files containing page groups. For one PDF per original page, look for split at every page or extract pages as separate files. A setting such as “split after every 10 pages” creates multi-page files instead.
- One output per page: use PDFsam Basic’s every-page split, or Acrobat desktop’s separate-file extraction.
- Selected pages only: use page extraction and choose the page numbers you need.
- Groups of pages: use a page-count split, a file-size split, or bookmarks where supported.
- Private or confidential file: prefer a local desktop workflow if your rules do not allow uploading the PDF. PDFsam says its processing is local; Acrobat’s web workflow saves files to Adobe cloud storage.
These are different operations, even when the applications place them near each other. In Acrobat desktop, Extract Pages and Split are separate tools.
Split every page locally with PDFsam Basic

- Open PDFsam Basic and choose its split tool. Add the PDF you want to process.
- Set the split mode to every page. Check that you have not selected an every-N-pages or bookmark split by mistake.
- Choose an output destination. Use a separate folder so the new files are easy to find and the original remains untouched.
- Set the output names if the interface offers the option. A consistent numbering scheme makes pages easier to sort and reassemble later.
- Run the split. When it finishes, compare the output count with the original page count and open a few of the results to confirm that each has one page.
PDFsam states that files are processed locally and are not uploaded. That is the vendor’s description of its data handling, not an independent security audit; follow your organization’s requirements for sensitive documents.
When PDFsam’s other split modes are useful
Choose every N pages when you need evenly sized sections rather than single-page documents. Use page-number ranges when the desired divisions do not fall at regular intervals. A file-size split can help divide a large document into smaller parts, while a bookmark split is useful when the PDF has a suitable navigation structure. Even/odd splitting separates alternating pages; it does not produce the ordinary consecutive one-page sequence that most readers mean by “single-page PDFs.”
Extract pages as separate files in Acrobat desktop
Adobe Acrobat desktop provides a direct extraction workflow for creating separate PDFs from selected pages. Its documented interface path is Organize Pages > Extract Pages.

- Open the PDF in Acrobat desktop and go to Organize Pages.
- Choose Extract Pages, then select the page or page range to extract. To create one file for each page, select the pages you need and enable Extract pages as separate files.
- Run the extraction and save the outputs to a destination you can identify. Keep the source PDF rather than saving over it.
- Check the resulting file count and open sample outputs to verify that each contains one page.
Acrobat’s help documentation says extraction preserves page content, form fields, comments, and links. It also notes that bookmarks or article threads associated with pages are not extracted. If those navigation elements matter, inspect the outputs and decide whether the extraction meets your needs before deleting or replacing anything.

Use Acrobat’s Split tool for other divisions
If you need grouped files rather than one file per page, use Organize Pages > Split. Acrobat desktop documents splitting by number of pages, file size, or top-level bookmarks, with controls for the output destination and naming convention. Select the split criterion that matches the result you want; do not assume that choosing Split will automatically create one file per page.
Split online with Acrobat on the web
Acrobat’s web workflow is an option when uploading the document is acceptable. The split process uses divider lines on the pages; Adobe Help Center says users can select up to 22 divider lines, depending on the PDF’s page count. The resulting files are saved to Adobe cloud storage. Acrobat’s web extraction workflow also saves extracted files there.
- Open Acrobat’s web split tool and upload the PDF.
- Use the page dividers to mark where the document should be separated. For a one-file-per-page result, a divider is needed between each adjacent pair of pages.
- Run the split, then retrieve the outputs from the Adobe cloud storage destination shown by the workflow.
- Check the output count and open sample files before relying on the result.
Because the web method involves upload and has a documented divider limit, a local desktop tool may be a better fit for confidential files or a large number of separate outputs. The exact web interface can vary by region and interface version.
What about macOS Preview?
Adobe’s online product information describes a Preview method: show the page thumbnails, then drag selected pages to the desktop or another folder. This is a possible built-in Mac route, but the exact steps can vary with macOS versions, and the available instructions here are not Apple support documentation. Confirm the method in the Preview version on your Mac and check the resulting files before using it for an important document. For a clearly documented every-page operation across Windows, macOS, and Linux, PDFsam Basic is the more directly specified route.

A successful completion message is not a substitute for checking the output. The following checks catch the most common mistakes without changing the source:

- Count the files: for a full one-page-per-file split, the number of output PDFs should equal the original PDF’s page count.
- Check page contents: open several outputs, including one near the beginning and one near the end. Confirm that each file has one page and that the expected content is present.
- Check ordering and names: sort the files by name and confirm that numbering reflects the original page order.
- Keep the source: retain the original until you have checked the outputs and know they are usable.
- Check required document features: if forms, comments, links, bookmarks, or article threads matter, inspect the extracted files rather than assuming every structural feature is preserved.
Troubleshooting common problems
The tool created a few multi-page PDFs instead of one file per page
The selected mode likely split by page count, file size, or bookmarks rather than at every page. Return to the split settings and choose the every-page option. In Acrobat, use Extract Pages and turn on Extract pages as separate files when that is the desired operation.
The output count does not match the source page count
Check whether you chose only a page range, whether the tool applied dividers or grouping rules, and whether all outputs went to the folder you are viewing. If using Acrobat on the web, its help page documents a limit of up to 22 divider lines, depending on page count; that may not suit a document requiring more divisions in one pass. Do not delete the original while investigating.
A page or part of the document will not extract
The PDF may have document restrictions. Adobe’s extraction help directs users to inspect the document’s Security properties for restrictions. If you are authorized to modify the document, check those settings and use an approved workflow; do not try to bypass protections you are not permitted to remove.

The extracted file is missing bookmarks or article threads
Adobe notes that bookmarks and article threads associated with pages are not extracted by its page-extraction workflow. If that navigation structure is important, confirm whether it remains available in your outputs and choose a workflow that meets the document’s needs.
You are unsure whether online processing is allowed
Acrobat’s web split and extraction workflows save output to Adobe cloud storage, so use them only if that data path is acceptable under your organization’s policies. PDFsam says it processes locally and does not upload files. For highly sensitive material, verify the applicable policy rather than relying on a software vendor’s general description alone.
