The most reliable way to split a tall screenshot into standard PDF pages is to treat it as one oversized PDF page, then use Adobe Acrobat’s Poster print mode. Poster tiling divides the page across letter-size or A4 sheets while letting you control scale, overlap, cut marks, labels, orientation and page order. Save the tiled print job as a new PDF when your operating system offers a PDF printer.
What you are creating
A scrolling screenshot is normally one very tall image. A conventional PDF viewer may display it as a single oversized page, which is awkward to print and difficult to read when shared. The workflow below produces one multipage PDF: each page is a regular sheet, and the pages follow the screenshot from top to bottom.
- Digital sharing: recipients can move through ordinary PDF pages.
- Printing: each page is sized for letter or A4 paper.
- Assembly: overlap, cut marks and labels help you trim and join sheets into one long image.
Adobe Acrobat: the complete Poster workflow
1. Put the screenshot on a PDF page
If the screenshot is already a PDF, open it in Acrobat. For a PNG, JPEG or WebP image, open the image in Acrobat if your edition supports direct opening, or first place it on a PDF page using any image-to-PDF command available on your system. The important point is that the screenshot remains a single, oversized page before tiling.
2. Open the print dialog
- On Windows, choose Menu > Print. On macOS, choose File > Print.
- In Page Sizing & Handling, select Poster. Acrobat describes this mode as splitting one large page across multiple sheets.
3. Choose Tile Scale
Tile Scale sets the printed size of the source page. At 100%, Acrobat preserves the source scale; a very tall screenshot may therefore require many sheets. Increase the percentage when small interface text must stay readable. Decrease it when reducing the sheet count matters more. This is a direct readability-versus-pages trade-off: larger tiles improve detail but create more pages, while smaller tiles save paper but shrink text.

4. Set overlap, marks and labels
- Overlap: adds a shared margin between neighboring sheets so you can align and join them. Use it when the physical pages will be assembled; leave it off when the PDF will only be read digitally.
- Cut marks: prints trimming guides at tile edges.
- Labels: identifies each sheet with filename and page information, making it easier to restore order after printing.
5. Check orientation and paper
Choose the paper size loaded in your printer, normally Letter or A4. A tall screenshot often uses portrait tiles, but a wide page can make landscape tiles more efficient. Confirm that the printer’s unprintable margins are not clipping important content.
6. Inspect Acrobat’s live preview
Acrobat updates the preview as you change scale and tiling options. Scroll through the complete preview before committing. Look specifically for:
- an unexpected blank final page;
- text or images clipped at a tile edge;
- an impractical portrait/landscape choice;
- tiles that appear out of sequence; and
- an excessive page count caused by an unnecessarily high scale.
7. Print or save as a new PDF
To make physical sheets, send the job to your printer. To create a multipage PDF, select the operating system’s PDF destination (for example, a “Save as PDF” printer) if it is available in the print dialog, then choose a new filename. Keep the page order shown in the preview; Acrobat’s first tile is the top of the screenshot.

Do not judge only by the thumbnail preview. Zoom into a tile containing the smallest text, then verify that the same text remains legible at the intended viewing or print size.

Mac Preview: useful for scaling, not automatic poster tiling
Preview can open an image or PDF and print selected pages. In its print dialog, the Preview section includes Scale, where you enter a percentage. It also offers Scale to Fit, Print Entire Image and Fill Entire Paper, plus options for printing multiple pages per sheet.
Keep the complete screenshot visible
Choose Print Entire Image when preserving every pixel matters. Fill Entire Paper fits the image to the paper’s proportions and can crop portions of a tall screenshot. Check the preview for missing top or bottom content before printing.
Why Acrobat is easier for this job
Preview’s documented controls cover scaling, fitting and pages-per-sheet, but they do not provide a dedicated automatic Poster command for cutting one very tall image into a sequence of sheets. You can manually create intermediate pages, but that adds work and makes consistent seams and ordering harder. Acrobat Poster is the more direct option when the goal is automatic tiling.
When a long screenshot will not tile cleanly
Blank or nearly blank last page
The source page dimensions, scale and printer margins can leave a small remainder that Acrobat places on its own sheet. Lower Tile Scale slightly, or accept the page if the remainder is meaningful. Always verify the preview before saving.

Content is clipped
Check whether Fill Entire Paper (in Preview) or a printer margin is cropping the image. In Acrobat, reduce scale, switch orientation, or choose a paper size that matches the tile dimensions. Never rely on a borderless-print setting unless your printer actually supports it.
Text is too small
Increase Tile Scale and allow additional sheets. If the original screenshot is already low resolution, enlarging it cannot recreate detail that was never captured; recapture at a larger viewport or device scale when possible.
Pages are hard to assemble
Enable Overlap to create an alignment margin, Cut marks to show where to trim, and Labels to identify filename and page numbers. Lay the sheets out in preview order before trimming.
Unexpected orientation or ordering
Return to the preview, switch between portrait and landscape, and confirm that the first tile contains the top of the screenshot. A printer’s collate setting can also change physical order; for a single copy, verify the output stack before binding.

Quality, file size and workflow notes
- Source resolution: tiling changes page layout, not the underlying pixels. Start with the highest-resolution screenshot available.
- PDF size: a long, image-heavy screenshot can produce a large PDF. Keep the original image format and avoid repeated conversions before tiling.
- Review before printing: digital preview costs nothing and catches blank pages, clipping and wrong orientation before paper and ink are used.
- Order preservation: labels are especially useful when printing several copies or when sheets must be transported before assembly.
- Paper: Letter and A4 are the natural choices because Poster output is a set of physical sheets; select the actual stock loaded in the printer.
