Upload the screenshot to a tool that can interpret images, check that it read the math correctly, and then follow the working one step at a time. A screenshot solver has to do two different jobs: recognize the symbols and solve the expression. If it misreads a minus sign, exponent, fraction bar, or diagram label, even convincing-looking steps may answer the wrong question.

For a dedicated math app, Photomath documents camera scanning, editable recognized expressions, and manual math-keyboard entry. Google describes using Lens to photograph a math problem and get step-by-step help. A saved screenshot and a live camera scan are different inputs, so choose an image-upload or scan control that actually accepts the image you have.

How to solve a math problem from a screenshot

  1. Make the problem legible. Crop away unrelated material if that makes the question easier to read. Keep all relevant equations, instructions, labels, answer choices, and diagram details in frame.
  2. Open an image-capable solver. Upload the saved screenshot if the service offers image upload, or use a math app’s camera scanner. Photomath documents pointing its camera at a problem; Google describes taking a picture with Lens for step-by-step math help. The exact controls depend on the service and may differ between a live camera and a saved image.
  3. Check what the tool thinks the problem says. Compare its interpreted expression with the screenshot before accepting the solution. Pay particular attention to minus signs, decimal points, parentheses, exponents, fraction bars, radicals, and small labels in diagrams.
  4. Correct recognition mistakes. If the app lets you edit the recognized expression, fix it and solve again. Photomath also documents entering math with its in-app keyboard.
  5. Read the reasoning, not just the answer. Check that each transformation follows from the previous one and that the result answers the question as written. If a step is unclear, ask for clarification or work through that step yourself.

These checks matter because image recognition and mathematical solving are separate stages. Photomath describes first reading the problem and then applying a solving algorithm. A recognition error can therefore send the solver down a correct-looking path for the wrong expression.

Which screenshot solver should you use?

Photomath

Photomath is a math-focused option. Its help pages describe scanning a problem, editing the recognized math, and entering an expression with a math keyboard. Its overview describes solution steps, with core steps available free and additional Plus features such as animated tutorials and extra hints. Check Photomath’s current plan details before relying on a particular feature; the available evidence does not establish a current price.

Photomath says submitted images are sent to cloud servers for analysis before its solving algorithm is applied. Its privacy policy says images and feedback may be used to improve its service and math-solving capabilities. Read the current policy before sending an image that includes sensitive information.

Google Lens and Search

Google’s Search announcement describes using Lens to take a picture of a math problem and receive step-by-step help. It also discusses image-based help for some word problems and geometry problems. This documents those use cases, not support for every topic or guaranteed correctness.

Google’s Gemini privacy information says Lens technology helps interpret image content. It also explains that Keep Activity settings affect whether shared images may be used to improve Google services with human reviewers. Check the current settings and privacy information for the specific Google service and account you use.

General-purpose image assistants

An image-capable assistant may be useful when you want to ask follow-up questions about a screenshot, but behavior, image availability, and data handling vary by product, account, and upload mode. Microsoft’s Copilot privacy FAQ distinguishes uploaded files from Vision images: under the described workflow, uploaded files may be retained for up to 18 months, while Vision images are processed to respond and are not used to train or personalize. Account type and product changes can affect terms, so consult the live policy before uploading.

These privacy descriptions do not establish which service is more accurate at solving math. No comparable current accuracy benchmark is available here, so there is no supported accuracy ranking between Photomath, Lens, Copilot, or Gemini.

How to check the answer before using it

  • Verify transcription first. Look at the original image and the expression the solver recognized. Check signs, grouping, units, and diagram labels rather than assuming the tool read them correctly.
  • Check the requested quantity. A problem may ask for a value, an interval, a proof, a simplified form, or an explanation. Confirm that the final response addresses that request.
  • Audit the steps. Test algebraic transformations, arithmetic, substitutions, and units. For a numerical answer, substitute it back into the original equation when that is appropriate.
  • Try an independent check if something looks wrong. Re-enter the expression manually, use a different method, or ask a teacher or tutor to explain the disputed step. A second AI response is not a guarantee of correctness.
  • Use it to learn the method. Try to explain why each step works, then solve a similar problem without looking. Do not treat a generated solution as proof that you understand the topic.

Step-by-step explanations are documented for the services above, but that does not mean every tool supports every subject, reads every image correctly, or always produces a correct solution. The reviewed sources do not provide a comparable screenshot-solving accuracy rate.

What to do when the screenshot is not recognized

The recognized expression has the wrong symbols

Compare the displayed expression with the image and correct it in the app if possible. Photomath documents editing a recognized problem and offers math-keyboard entry as an alternative. If the screenshot is too small or cluttered, crop it so the relevant math is easier to distinguish, while keeping necessary instructions and context.

The app cannot detect the problem

For a live camera scan, Photomath identifies poor lighting and an unclean camera as possible causes of recognition trouble. Improve the lighting, clean the camera lens, and hold the phone steady. For an existing screenshot, check that the relevant text is visible and legible, then try the service’s image-upload option if available.

The answer is plausible but the working is unclear

Ask for an explanation of a specific step, or enter the expression manually and compare the result. If a problem depends on a diagram, make sure the image includes the labels and wording that define it; do not assume a solver inferred missing context correctly.

The service offers only a result or a feature is unavailable

Switch to a service whose documented workflow offers steps for the kind of problem you have, or ask for an explanation after entering the expression as text. Product capabilities, account settings, and free-versus-paid boundaries can change; check the service’s current feature information rather than assuming a feature is included.

Privacy and schoolwork considerations

A screenshot can include more than a math question: names, account details, class information, or other personal content may be visible around it. Crop or redact unrelated sensitive information where practical, and review the service’s current privacy terms and settings before uploading.

The published policies describe different handling by service and mode. Photomath says images and feedback may help improve its service. Microsoft distinguishes uploaded files from Copilot Vision images, and Google’s Gemini information describes the role of Lens and Keep Activity. These are not interchangeable workflows; check the applicable current policy rather than assuming that all image inputs are handled alike.

If you need a clean screenshot of a web page containing a math problem before sending it to a solver, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF with one API request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a math solver; use Photomath, Lens, or another math-capable tool to interpret and explain the problem.

The request below captures a web page as WebP. Replace the URL with the page you need and put your API key in place of YOUR_API_KEY. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a saved screenshot, or do I have to scan the problem live?

Use an image-upload control if the service offers one; a camera-scanning workflow may be designed for a live scan instead.

Is an AI solution guaranteed to be correct?

No. Check both the recognized problem and the reasoning; no comparable current accuracy benchmark establishes a guarantee.
