To silently install Google Chrome from an MSI package, open an elevated Command Prompt or your software-deployment tool and run:
msiexec /q /l GoogleChrome.msi
Replace GoogleChrome.msi with the actual file name or full path. Download the current Windows MSI from Google’s Chrome Enterprise download page, test it on a small group, and verify managed settings at chrome://policy before broad deployment.
What the silent MSI command does
msiexec is Windows Installer. Google’s Windows deployment documentation gives /q for a quiet installation and shows the complete command as msiexec /q /l GoogleChrome.msi. The command runs without the normal interactive Chrome installer screens. Use the exact MSI name supplied by Google, or provide an absolute path such as C:PackagesGoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi.
Run the command in the security context your deployment system uses. For a manual test, that normally means opening Command Prompt with administrator rights. For an enterprise rollout, use the installation context of your endpoint-management product.

Before you install
Get the correct package
- Open Google’s Chrome Enterprise download page.
- Choose the Windows channel you need, such as Stable or Beta, and the required architecture.
- Download the MSI and record its exact file name and location. Versions change, so obtain a current package rather than reusing an old copy without checking it.
Google states that Chrome can be downloaded and deployed at no cost. The MSI is intended for Windows administration; this procedure does not install Chrome on macOS or Linux.
Check the target computer
- Confirm that the target is a supported Windows computer managed by your organization or that you have local administrator rights for a direct test.
- Check the Chrome version already installed. An MSI installation can override a user-level Chrome installation, while an older Chrome version cannot be installed over a newer one.
- Decide whether the package is intended for a user-level or system-level installation. Google identifies user data under
%USER DATA%GoogleChromeApplicationand system installations underProgram FilesGoogleChromeApplication; the installer type determines the actual location. - Close active Chrome sessions when your deployment policy permits. A running browser may delay replacement or leave users with processes from the previous installation until they restart Chrome.
Install Chrome silently from an elevated Command Prompt
- Copy the downloaded MSI to the target machine, or make it available from a controlled network share.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator. If the MSI is in another directory, change to that directory with
cd, or use its complete path. - Run Google’s documented quiet command, substituting your file name:
msiexec /q /l GoogleChrome.msi
For a path containing spaces, quote the package path:
msiexec /q /l "C:PackagesGoogle Chrome Enterprise.msi"
- Wait for the Windows Installer process to finish. Because the interface is quiet, there may be no visible progress window.
- Launch Chrome from the Start menu or the installed executable and confirm that it opens.
- Open
chrome://settings/helpto inspect the installed browser version, then openchrome://policyto confirm that expected organizational policies are present.
Google’s published command includes /l but does not specify a log file name or explain the logging switches on the referenced page. Do not assume that a particular log path or verbosity was created; use your deployment platform’s documented logging and Windows Installer diagnostics when you need detailed records.
Deploy the MSI to many Windows computers
Use your existing software-distribution system
Google says an MSI can be distributed like other Windows Installer packages. Named examples include Active Directory Group Policy Management, HP Client Automation, and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager. Other endpoint-management products can also push the package. The right choice depends on what your organization already operates, not on a universal ranking established by Google.

- Upload or stage the current MSI in the distribution system.
- Set the installation command or package program to the quiet command, replacing the sample name with the staged file name.
- Target a pilot device collection or test organizational unit first.
- Apply Chrome policies, extension rules, and update controls required by your organization.
- Measure installation success and policy arrival in the pilot before expanding the assignment.
Group Policy and policy validation
For managed Chrome, configure the administrative settings your organization requires, deploy them with your Windows management process, and validate on an actual test computer. On each test machine, visit chrome://policy and check that the expected entries are listed and applied. If Group Policy settings have not arrived, Google specifically mentions running:
gpupdate /force
Refresh chrome://policy afterward. A policy that is listed but marked with an error needs investigation in the policy definition or value; a policy that is absent may indicate targeting, replication, or refresh timing rather than an MSI failure.
What happens to an existing Chrome installation
- User-installed Chrome: Google says installing Chrome from an MSI overrides a version installed by a user.
- Newer version already present: Google says an older Chrome version cannot be installed over a newer one. Compare the MSI’s version with the target’s installed version before assigning the package.
- Install scope: The resulting files are in a user-level or system-level location according to the installer type. Do not infer the scope solely from the fact that the command was quiet.
These behaviors make version and scope checks essential in a mixed environment where some employees installed Chrome themselves and others received it through management.
Testing checklist before rollout
- Use a representative pilot group covering the Windows editions, security software, proxy configuration, and user profiles in your environment.
- Test both a computer with no Chrome and one with a user-installed Chrome copy.
- Test the package against computers that already have the same or a newer Chrome version; confirm that your deployment tool reports the expected result.
- Verify that Chrome launches, existing profiles remain usable, and required extensions and policies appear.
- Run
gpupdate /forcewhere appropriate and recheckchrome://policy. - Confirm that your distribution platform records completion, failure, and retry status for each device.
Troubleshooting silent MSI installs
Nothing appears to happen
Quiet mode intentionally suppresses the installer interface. Check the deployment tool’s status, Windows Installer events, and whether the Chrome executable or Start-menu entry appears after the process completes. Confirm that the command points to the actual MSI and that the service account can read its location.

The command says the file cannot be found
Use the full path and quote it when it contains spaces. Verify the downloaded file name in Explorer or with your deployment system rather than copying the example name unchanged.
The install does not replace Chrome
Check whether the existing browser is newer than the MSI. Google documents that an older version cannot overwrite a newer one. Download a current package from the official page and reassess your version-management rule.
A user’s Chrome changed unexpectedly
An MSI deployment can override a user-installed version. Pilot the package with both installation scenarios and communicate the change before assigning it to production devices.
Policies are missing
Open chrome://policy, refresh Group Policy with gpupdate /force, and verify that the device is in the intended organizational unit or management collection. Distinguish a policy-delivery problem from an MSI installation problem by first confirming that Chrome itself launches.

The deployment tool reports failure but Chrome opens
Do not treat a visible browser window as proof that the package returned success. Review the tool’s exit-status handling and Windows Installer records, then rerun the package only under your organization’s approved retry policy. Keep the original MSI and target version documented so that retries do not accidentally attempt a downgrade.
Operational and security considerations
Use Google’s official download page and your organization’s approved software repository. Restrict write access to the location from which management systems retrieve the MSI, and test changes in a controlled group. Silent installation removes prompts, not the need for authorization: the command still requires the permissions granted by the account or management agent running it.
For large fleets, schedule deployment around user impact, define a rollback or remediation procedure in your endpoint tool, and retain package-version records. Google’s deployment guidance is organization-focused and recommends testing each scenario or policy configuration with a test group before scaling.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run the Chrome MSI command from PowerShell?
Yes. Invoke the same Windows Installer command from an elevated PowerShell session, quoting the MSI path when it contains spaces. The documented Chrome command itself is unchanged.
Does silent installation automatically configure Chrome policies?
No. The MSI installs Chrome; policy delivery is a separate management task. Verify applied settings at chrome://policy and refresh Group Policy when needed.
Should I deploy Stable or Beta?
Choose the channel required by your testing and release policy from Google’s current Chrome Enterprise download page. Pilot the selected channel before assigning it broadly.
