Apple now calls an Apple ID an Apple Account, but the sign-out process is the same. On an iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > Sign Out. On a Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > Sign Out.
Signing out is not the same as erasing a device. Choose Sign Out But Don’t Erase when keeping the device; choose the erase option when selling, trading in, giving away, or returning it.
Before signing out
- Back up or transfer your recent photos, files, contacts, messages, and other data.
- Confirm recent changes have synced to iCloud by checking another Apple device or iCloud.com.
- Have your device passcode and Apple Account password available.
- Decide whether you are keeping the device or transferring it to someone else.
Data already stored in iCloud remains there when you sign out. However, local copies may be removed from the device unless you choose to keep them when prompted.

- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Choose Sign Out But Don’t Erase or Erase this iPhone.
- Follow the prompts and enter your iPhone passcode or Apple Account password if requested.
- Confirm the sign-out.
Which option should you choose?
Sign Out But Don’t Erase is appropriate if you are keeping the iPhone, temporarily switching accounts, or troubleshooting iCloud. It may leave local files and settings on the phone.

Choose Erase this iPhone for a sale, trade-in, return, or gift. You can also use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. Back up first, and choose to erase the eSIM profile if the erase assistant offers that option.
Signing out also signs the iPhone out of the App Store, iMessage, and FaceTime. A paired Apple Watch is signed out of iCloud when you sign out on the iPhone; unpair and erase the watch separately before transferring it.
Sign out on a Mac
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click your name in the sidebar.
- Click Sign Out.
- Select the iCloud data you want to retain locally, if prompted.
- Click Keep a Copy where applicable.
- If prompted about Apple Pay, choose Sign Out and Remove Cards.
- Confirm by clicking Sign Out again.
On older macOS versions, the path may be Apple menu > System Preferences > Apple ID or iCloud > Sign Out. Some older systems also show Safari passwords as a local-copy option.

Preparing an iPhone or Mac for a new owner
- Back up or transfer your data.
- Sign out of your Apple Account.
- Make sure Find My is turned off.
- Erase all content and settings.
- Remove the iPhone eSIM when prompted.
- Stop at the Hello or setup screen.
Do not hand over a device that shows iPhone Locked to Owner or requests the previous owner’s credentials. Signing out alone does not prove that the transfer is complete. Turning off Find My automatically removes Activation Lock in the supported device workflow.
Turn off Find My on an iPhone
- Open Settings > [your name] > Find My.
- Tap Find My iPhone.
- Turn it off and authenticate if requested.
Turn off Find My on a Mac
On macOS 15 or later, open System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All > Find My Mac > Turn Off. On macOS 14 or earlier, Find My Mac may appear directly under iCloud.
Erase a compatible Mac
On a Mac with Apple silicon or a T2 Security Chip running macOS Monterey 12 or later, use Apple menu > System Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Follow the erase assistant and leave the Mac at the setup screen. Older Macs require a manual backup, sign-out, drive erase, and macOS reinstallation.

Remove a device remotely
If the iPhone or Mac is no longer in your possession, go to icloud.com/find, sign in, select the device, and choose Erase This Device when appropriate. An offline device begins erasing when it reconnects. After erasure completes, choose Remove This Device to remove it from Find My and release Activation Lock.

What changes after sign-out?
| Service | What to expect |

Fix a gray or unavailable Sign Out button
Screen Time restrictions
If the message says “Sign out is not available due to restrictions,” go to Settings > Screen Time > Change Screen Time Passcode > Turn Off Screen Time Passcode. Enter the Screen Time passcode, then try signing out again.

If the Apple Account name itself is gray, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allow Changes To > Accounts > Allow. A parent or guardian may need to approve changes on a child’s device.
Managed devices and forgotten passwords
A school- or employer-managed iPhone or Mac may block account changes, erasure, or logout. Contact the organization’s IT administrator; do not try to bypass its management controls.
If you cannot remember the account password, use Apple’s official account-recovery and Activation Lock support process. There is no legitimate third-party Activation Lock bypass. Apple may require valid credentials, the device passcode where supported, or acceptable proof of purchase.

On a Mac with no visible Sign Out button, confirm an internet connection, scroll to the bottom of Apple Account settings, and check for pending authentication prompts or device management. Do not delete iCloud folders manually as a substitute for signing out.
When signing out is unnecessary
If you only want to stop one service from syncing, change that service’s iCloud setting instead of signing out completely. This keeps the Apple Account connected while disabling selected features. It does not erase the device, remove the account, or prepare it for a new owner.

Does signing out delete photos stored in iCloud?
No. Photos and other data already stored in iCloud remain there, although local copies can be removed from the device unless you choose to retain them.

Yes. After signing out, you can sign in with another Apple Account, but App Store purchases and subscriptions remain associated with the account that originally obtained them.
What should a buyer do if a used device says “Locked to Owner”?
Do not continue setup or accept the device. Ask the previous owner to erase it and remove it from Find My, or return it to the seller.
