For a PDF that only needs your signature, open it on your iPhone, choose Markup, tap Add (+) → Add Signature, draw your signature, place it on the page, then save and share the completed PDF. If the sender supplied a DocuSign or Adobe Acrobat Sign link, use that service instead of adding a separate Markup signature.
Choose the right signing method

A simple drawn signature is an electronic-signature annotation. It is not automatically the same as a managed transaction with identity checks, an audit trail or a certificate-based digital signature.
Sign a PDF with iPhone Markup
Markup is the fastest free choice for an ordinary PDF when the recipient accepts a simple electronic signature. Apple documents this capability in supported apps such as Files, Mail, Messages, Notes and Photos.
- Open the PDF from Files, Mail, Messages, Safari, Notes or another app that displays it.
- Tap the Markup icon. Its position varies by app; it usually resembles a pen tip in a circle.
- Tap Add (+), then choose Add Signature.
- Draw your signature with your finger and tap Done.
- Tap the signature to move or resize it, then place it on the correct line.
- For a date, printed name or other short entry, choose Add (+) → Add Text and type it with the onscreen keyboard.
- Tap Done again. Use Share to send the completed PDF by Mail, Messages, AirDrop or another destination, or save a copy to Files.
Markup lets you create more than one saved signature and adjust a signature’s size, position, line weight and color. See Apple’s instructions at Apple’s iPhone User Guide.

Check the exported file
- Reopen the saved copy and confirm the signature is on the intended page.
- Make sure it does not cover required text, checkboxes or another signature.
- Confirm every date and typed field is present.
- Verify that you are sending the completed PDF, not the unsigned original or a screenshot.
Fill and sign forms in Preview on iOS 26
Apple’s current iPhone documentation includes a Preview app for filling and signing PDF forms. This workflow is tied to iOS 26, so readers on earlier releases may not see Preview or the same controls.
- Open Preview and open the PDF form.
- Tap the form-filling button.
- Tap each field and enter the required information.
- To insert a signature or a text form box, tap Add (+) and choose the relevant option.
- Create or select your signature, position it, review the form, then save or share the PDF.
The Apple steps are documented at Fill out and sign PDF forms on iPhone. If Preview is unavailable, use Markup through Files or another supported app.
When the PDF is not actually fillable
An interactive PDF has fields that accept text when tapped. A flat or scanned PDF is only a picture of a page, so tapping a blank line does nothing. A locked PDF may block editing or signing altogether.

Add fields manually
With Markup, zoom in, choose Add (+) → Add Text, and place a text box over each line. This works for dates, names, addresses, initials, phone numbers, job titles and checkbox-like marks. Review alignment after saving.

In Acrobat mobile, open the file, choose Fill & Sign from the bottom menu, select Text box, and tap where text should appear. Adobe’s current instructions are at Acrobat Fill & Sign.
If the PDF is locked
Ask the sender for an unlocked or fillable copy, the intended password, or an invitation through its signing platform. Do not try to bypass document security.

Use Adobe Acrobat on an iPhone
Acrobat is useful when Markup is awkward, when you need more precise text placement, or when you want to create a signature from a drawing, an image or a camera capture.
- Open the PDF in the Acrobat mobile app.
- Select Fill & Sign.
- Use Text box for typed information.
- Tap the signature control and choose an existing signature or create one.
- Create it by drawing, selecting an image or capturing it with the camera.
- Tap Done, move and resize the signature, then save or share the completed PDF.
Acrobat mobile (formerly described in some older guides as Adobe Fill & Sign) is different from Adobe Acrobat Sign, which handles managed signing requests. Signature-creation details are in Adobe’s Acrobat for iOS documentation.

If someone sent a signing link, stay in that service. Downloading the file, adding a Markup signature and emailing it back can break the sender’s workflow or leave required fields and audit records incomplete.

DocuSign
- Open the DocuSign email or text message.
- Tap the review or signing link.
- Follow the prompts and tap each required field.
- Create or adopt your signature, complete the remaining fields and submit.
DocuSign says recipients can sign on iPhone or iPad without paying for a signer account. Its workflow overview is at DocuSign’s iPhone signing guide.
Adobe Acrobat Sign
- Open the app’s Waiting for You panel.
- Select the document and tap the sign control.
- Tap Start.
- Complete text fields, tap the signature field and confirm or edit the signature.
- Tap Finish.
See Adobe Acrobat Sign’s iOS workflow. Depending on the offering and account, the Acrobat Sign app may require a qualifying Adobe subscription.

- Electronic signature: a broad category including a typed name, drawn mark, inserted image or click-to-consent action.
- Managed e-signature: a service workflow that can add authentication, timestamps, reminders, signer order, audit records and tamper evidence.
- Digital signature: generally a certificate-based signature using a digital ID and cryptographic verification.
Adobe describes certificate-based digital signatures and trusted certificate authorities at its digital-signature documentation. Markup alone does not automatically provide those protections.

Is an iPhone signature legally valid?
In the United States, electronic signatures are generally recognized in many transactions under the federal ESIGN Act, and state electronic-transaction laws may also apply. DocuSign’s legal overview explains that a contract or signature generally cannot be denied validity merely because it is electronic: DocuSign’s ESIGN explanation.
That does not make every iPhone signature acceptable for every document. The relevant issues can include your intent to sign, consent to electronic records, identification of the signer, retention and reproduction of the record, later alteration, and special statutory or institutional rules. Courts, government agencies, regulated transactions, financial institutions and high-value agreements may require a particular provider, identity verification or certificate. Follow the recipient’s instructions; this is general information, not legal advice.
Troubleshooting
Markup is missing
- Tap Share and look for Markup.
- Save the attachment to Files and open it there instead of inside Mail or Messages.
- Try Preview on iOS 26 or Acrobat mobile.
The signature is misplaced or disappears
- Save a new copy.
- Close and reopen that copy.
- Confirm the signature remains visible and correctly positioned.
- If the recipient requires a flattened PDF, use the export or print workflow they specify; do not assume every Markup annotation is permanently embedded in the same way.
The recipient rejects the file
Ask whether they require a particular signature line, initials on each page, a date format, a specific file type, a DocuSign or Acrobat Sign transaction, a certificate-based signature or an audit trail. For multiple signers, use the sender’s platform and signing order rather than circulating separately annotated copies.
