If your theme uses a block-based layout or you want to place a quote within content or a template, a Gutenberg block or shortcode may be a better fit.
Use the XV Random Quotes widget
XV Random Quotes documents a direct sidebar setup. Its WordPress plugin listing describes the widget and its other placement options.
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New, search for XV Random Quotes, then install and activate it.
- Go to Appearance > Widgets. Add the XV Random Quotes widget to the sidebar or widget area where you want the quote to appear.
- Configure the available options, such as a category filter or whether quotes appear randomly or sequentially.
- Save the widget, then view the relevant page on your site to check the result.
The plugin listing also describes an option to rotate quotes through AJAX. That changes the display behavior from simply selecting a quote when a page is rendered; check the setting and test it on your site if you want automatic rotation.
Choose the right way to place quotes
A traditional widget is a straightforward choice for a sidebar with a widget area. If that does not match your theme or editing workflow, both XV Random Quotes and Display a Quote document other ways to insert quotes.

| Placement method | When it fits | Documented options |
|---|---|---|
| Widget | A sidebar or another widget area | XV Random Quotes supports categories and random or sequential ordering. Display a Quote also offers a widget. |
| Gutenberg block | A block-based page or layout where you want to position the quote within the editor | XV Random Quotes and Display a Quote list a block. |
| Shortcode | A location that accepts shortcodes | XV Random Quotes lists [stray-random]; Display a Quote lists [daquote]. |
| Theme template | A theme integration rather than an editor-managed placement | XV Random Quotes documents template tags. |
Shortcodes and template tags are not widget setup steps: use them only where your theme or editor supports that insertion method. For block-based themes, the precise sidebar and widget-area controls can differ from the classic Appearance > Widgets screen.

Display a Quote’s plugin listing documents a separate workflow centered on creating and organizing quotes. The listing says to create entries in the Quotes menu, then use its widget, block, or [daquote] shortcode to display them. It supports quote categories and includes an option to hide the author.
Rank #2
Choose between plugins based on the controls you need: the cited listings describe category filtering, author visibility, random or sequential ordering, and optional AJAX rotation across the two plugins, but they do not establish that either is best for every site.

Check the result on your site
- Confirm the quote appears in the intended sidebar and at the intended size on desktop and mobile.
- Check whether the author should be shown and whether the selected category contains the quotes you expect.
- Refresh or revisit the page to see whether the quote changes as intended. If using AJAX rotation, test that behavior separately.
- Review the plugin’s current listing and test with your theme, WordPress setup, and caching configuration. The plugin documentation does not establish compatibility or accessibility behavior for every setup.
