To control WhatsApp pop-ups on Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Notifications, select WhatsApp, and change Show notification banners. To hide pop-ups without losing a record of alerts, leave notifications on, turn banners off, and keep Notification Center notifications on.
Show WhatsApp banner notifications
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Under Notifications from apps and other senders, select WhatsApp.
- Turn Notifications on.
- Turn Show notification banners on.
- Set Show notifications in notification center and Play a sound according to your preference.
A banner is the temporary pop-up Windows displays on the desktop. Microsoft’s Windows notification settings guide treats banners, Notification Center entries, and sounds as separate controls. The exact layout can vary with Windows updates, app version, language, and device policy.
Hide banners but keep a notification history
In Settings > System > Notifications > WhatsApp, use this combination:
- Notifications: On
- Show notification banners: Off
- Show notifications in notification center: On
This suppresses desktop pop-ups while allowing you to review notifications later. Open Notification Center with Windows key + N. Hiding a banner does not delete a WhatsApp message or stop your account from receiving it.
Turn off all Windows notifications from WhatsApp
To stop WhatsApp notifications through Windows—including banners, sounds, and Notification Center alerts—open Settings > System > Notifications > WhatsApp and turn the main Notifications switch off. This disables Windows alerts; messages can still be available when you open WhatsApp.
Change sounds and protect message privacy
Mute the sound but keep banners
Leave Notifications and Show notification banners on, then turn Play a sound off in WhatsApp’s Windows notification settings.
Limit what a notification reveals
Windows has a setting to hide notification content on the lock screen, where available. That concerns the screen shown before sign-in; it is not necessarily the same as hiding message text in desktop banners. If people nearby should not see message previews, turn banners off or use a content-hiding option available for the relevant notification on your Windows build.

WhatsApp may also offer in-app preferences for choosing which message, group, call, or reaction events generate alerts. Labels and choices can vary by release. Use WhatsApp’s settings to choose alert types, and Windows’ Show notification banners control to decide whether alerts appear as desktop pop-ups.
Fix missing or unexpected WhatsApp banners
If banners do not appear, check these in order:
- In Settings > System > Notifications, confirm the global Notifications switch is on.
- Select the actual sender—WhatsApp or the browser you use—and check that its Notifications and Show notification banners switches are on.
- Check whether Do Not Disturb is active. While it is on, alarms, reminders, and priority apps may still show banners; other notifications are sent to Notification Center. To permit WhatsApp, open Set priority notifications and add it.
- Check whether a Focus session is running. Microsoft describes Focus as reducing distractions and automatically turning on Do Not Disturb; end the session or review its notification rules. See Microsoft’s Focus guide.
- Open WhatsApp and confirm you are signed in and the account is linked. Send a test message or wait for a real notification.
- If settings look correct, restart WhatsApp and test again. Confirm the alert is not coming from another WhatsApp installation, a browser, or another sender.
Do Not Disturb can also turn on automatically on a schedule or during activities such as duplicating a display, playing a game, or using a full-screen app. Windows may change notification wording or behavior after an update. Microsoft’s notification troubleshooting guidance also identifies suppression modes as a possible reason alerts do not appear.
If WhatsApp is missing from the sender list
The list may not show WhatsApp until that installation has generated a Windows notification, and the sender can have a different name. Open WhatsApp, trigger a test notification, then return to Settings > System > Notifications and search for WhatsApp, a browser name, or another relevant sender. If you use WhatsApp Web, browser notification permissions may control the alert and the browser may appear as its sender. If the app still is not listed, check that you are using the intended installed app and consider updating or reinstalling it from its official source; do not assume the setting will appear immediately.
Why WhatsApp can notify when its window is closed
Closing or minimizing an app window does not always quit the app. Some applications continue in the background so they can receive information and send notifications. Microsoft notes that background permissions are available for some apps, but desktop apps may not expose the same controls and may need to be managed through their own settings. For an app that exposes Windows background permissions, check Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find WhatsApp, select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options. If Background app permissions is present, available choices may include Always, Power optimized, or Never. This option is not available for every installation. To stop pop-ups without changing background behavior, turn off banners instead.

To bring pop-ups back, open Settings > System > Notifications > WhatsApp and turn on both Notifications and Show notification banners. If banners still do not appear, check Do Not Disturb, Focus, and whether the notification is coming from WhatsApp or a browser. If WhatsApp is not listed, launching it and generating a test notification may help Windows register the sender; this is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guarantee.
