Check visibility before sending: a link is not necessarily private just because it is hard to guess.
Choose what you want to share
“Share an image” can mean three different things. Decide which outcome you want before uploading, because the right link and visibility settings depend on it.
- Publish on a website you control: upload the file through the site’s media library, then display or link to it from a page. WordPress explains how to upload, store, and display media in its media and file attachments guide.
- Send a hosted image: upload it to an image host and share a direct URL if the recipient needs the image resource or an embeddable address. Imgur’s upload help covers adding content, and its image URL guide explains how to find an image address.
- Share a group of personal photos: use a shared album when recipients should browse a collection and you want album-level controls. Google Photos supports sharing with selected people or using a link, as described in its sharing guide.
A page or album link keeps surrounding information and service controls. A direct image URL generally opens the image itself, without the same context. The host’s rules determine whether that direct resource is public and whether it can be embedded or downloaded.
How to share an image from a website you control
- Open the site’s media library or upload tool. In WordPress, use the media workflow documented in Use Image and File Attachments. Other site builders have their own media controls.
- Upload the image and wait for it to finish. Add it to the page where it belongs, or copy its media address if you need to send the image itself.
- Choose the recipient’s link type. Copy the page URL for context, or the image resource URL for a direct image link. A page that requires a sign-in or permission will not be accessible to everyone just because you send its address.
- Check the result outside your signed-in session. Open the link in a private browser window or ask a recipient to confirm access. Verify that the page or image loads and that the visibility matches your intent.
- Send the link, not an assumption. Tell the recipient whether it opens a page or the image itself. Keep the URL and any service controls you may need to manage or remove the upload.
How to get a direct image URL from an image host
For Imgur, its desktop upload instructions say to choose New post and select or drag in files. After upload, the URL instructions describe right-clicking the image and copying its image address on desktop; mobile guidance describes using the image controls to copy a link. The service’s interface can vary by device, so follow its current upload instructions and URL instructions.

- Upload the image to the host and wait until the upload completes.
- Use the host’s sharing controls to copy a content link, or use its image-address option when you specifically need the image resource.
- Open the copied URL in a separate browser window. Confirm whether it leads to a page, album, or image file.
- Check the post’s visibility setting before sending the link. Save the content’s management or deletion route if you may need to revoke or remove it.
Imgur’s upload help states a limit of 50 images per hour; provider limits can change, so check the current help page if you are uploading in volume.

Use the website route when you own the destination and want the image presented with your content. Use a direct URL when the recipient needs the image resource. Use an album for a collection and its sharing controls. If access matters, prefer sharing with specific accounts over a link that recipients can pass on.

Check privacy and know how to revoke access
Image-host links are not a secure vault
Imgur says desktop uploads default to Hidden, while Public posts are searchable within Imgur and appear on the profile. It also says images remain available through direct URLs and can be downloaded, so Hidden does not mean secret or inaccessible to anyone with the direct address. Imgur says it removes EXIF metadata from uploaded images. Review its post privacy settings before relying on a visibility label.
Album links can be passed onward
Google Photos describes shared album links as unguessable and resettable, but anyone who has a link may pass it to someone else. Turning link sharing off is necessary to stop people with the old link from viewing the album. If an album member is removed while link sharing remains enabled, that person may still use the original link. - Open the album’s sharing controls and turn link sharing off to disable the existing link.
- If you still need link sharing, turn it back on to create a reset link, then distribute the new link only to intended recipients.
- For more controlled access, share directly with selected Google accounts and review who can collaborate.
For any host, test access from a browser where you are not signed in, and check the service’s current controls before sending sensitive material. If an image should not be available to someone who receives or forwards a URL, do not use a shareable public or link-based URL for it.

Uploading an image alone does not guarantee that it will appear in search. Google says the image and its page must be publicly accessible for the image to be considered for Google Images. Descriptive nearby text, such as alt text or a caption, can help explain the image, and indexing is not immediate. See Google Search Help for its guidance.

- Use accurate descriptive text near the image, including meaningful alt text or a caption where appropriate.
- Allow time for discovery; do not promise a particular placement or indexing date.

Troubleshooting shared image links
- The recipient sees an access denied page: the page or file may require a login or specific permission. Review the site’s visibility and sharing settings, then test the link while signed out.
- The link opens a page instead of the image: you copied the post or album link. Use the host’s image-address or direct-link option if the recipient needs the image resource.
- The recipient sees a broken image: check that the upload completed and that the URL is still valid. Some hosts or websites may change or remove files; consult the host’s current policies.
- A removed album member still has access: if link sharing remains on, the old link can continue to work. Disable link sharing and reset it as described in Google Photos’ album controls.
- The image is not appearing in search: make sure both image and page are public, add descriptive nearby text, and allow time for indexing; public access does not guarantee immediate inclusion.
- An upload is rejected or delayed: confirm file selection and network completion, then check the service’s current file and rate limits. Imgur’s cited upload help states 50 images per hour, but limits can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I share an image URL in a text message or email?
Yes. Paste the page, album, or direct image URL into the message; the recipient’s ability to open it depends on the host’s access settings.
Does a hidden image link guarantee privacy?
No. A person with a direct URL may still be able to access or download the image, depending on the host.
