To share a Figma file, open it, select Share in the top-right corner, choose who can access it and whether they can view or edit, then copy the link or invite someone by email. For private work, choose Only invited people rather than anyone with the link.
Share a Figma file with a link
- Open the file in Figma.
- Select Share in the top-right corner.
- In the sharing dialog, choose the audience: Anyone, eligible organization or workspace members, or Only invited people. Available choices can depend on the file and account settings.
- Under What they can do, select can view or can edit.
- Select Copy link, then send the copied link through email, chat, or another channel.
If a frame or other node is selected when you copy the link, Figma can make a link that opens at that location. If you want the recipient to start at the file’s general view, clear the selection before copying.
Invite someone by email
- Open the file and select Share.
- Enter the recipient’s email address in the invite field.
- Choose whether the person can view or edit.
- Send the invitation.
Direct invitations are useful when access should be limited to named people. If the invitation email does not arrive, you can send the file or prototype link directly; it will work only if the recipient’s access settings permit it.
Choose the audience and permission

Can view
Viewers can explore the file, inspect it, view prototypes, and comment, but they cannot edit the design. Choose this when you want feedback or review without granting permission to change layers and objects.

Can edit
Editors can change the file and also use viewer capabilities. Use edit access only for collaborators expected to make changes. Setting a link to allow editing does not necessarily guarantee that every recipient has the product access or seat needed to edit.
Can someone open a Figma file without an account?
Whether a recipient can open a file depends on the audience setting and the file’s access requirements. An Anyone link is the broadest sharing option, but it does not override other applicable restrictions. If the recipient is prompted to sign in or request access, check the audience setting and any organization-level controls rather than assuming that copying a link made the file public.

For sensitive work, do not use a broadly accessible link simply to avoid an invitation step. Use invitation-only access and add the intended recipients. A link is a convenient way to reach a file; the permission settings determine who can use it.

Figma’s available controls vary by plan and organization configuration. Paid plans may provide password protection, organization search visibility controls, and other sharing settings; Enterprise plans can add link expiration. On paid plans, editors may be able to disable viewers’ copying, sharing, and exporting under Advanced sharing settings. Check the controls available in your own Share dialog before relying on a particular restriction.

- For confidential work, use Only invited people and invite specific recipients.
- Use view access for reviewers who do not need to make design changes.
- Consider password protection or link expiration if those controls are available to your plan and appropriate to the file.
- Where available, review copying, sharing, and export restrictions in Advanced sharing settings.
These settings control access and actions in Figma; they do not make a recipient’s access equivalent to a guarantee that content cannot be copied or recorded by other means.
Troubleshoot common sharing problems
The recipient can open the file but cannot edit
Check the file’s What they can do setting and confirm that the recipient was given edit access, either through the link audience or a direct invitation. Also check their seat and product access. Figma separates file permissions from seats, so an edit role by itself may not include access to the product needed to edit.

The link asks the recipient to request access
Return to Share and check whether the audience is invitation-only or limited to eligible organization or workspace members. If the recipient is not covered by that audience, invite them directly or choose a broader audience if that is acceptable for the file.

The invitation email was missed
Send the copied file or prototype link directly. The recipient can still open it if the file’s permission settings grant access; sending the link does not itself change those settings.

The link opens at the wrong frame or location
If a frame or node was selected when the link was copied, Figma may have made a location-specific link. Copy the link again with no node selected when you want a general file link.
A collaborator has more access than intended
Open the Share dialog and review the audience and named invitees. Change the permission or remove access as appropriate, and check any organization-level sharing controls available to you. If the file was shared with anyone who has the link, changing it to invitation-only narrows the audience; simply sending a different link does not.
