To set up SAML single sign-on (SSO) in WordPress, install a SAML service-provider plugin, register the plugin’s WordPress service-provider metadata with your identity provider (IdP), then configure the IdP metadata and account mapping in WordPress. Test login, user identity, and permissions before redirecting users to SSO. Keep the site and SAML endpoints on HTTPS, and retain a recovery route for administrators.
How WordPress SAML SSO works
WordPress does not provide a SAML service-provider (SP) configuration by itself; an SP plugin handles the SAML exchange. The organization’s IdP authenticates the user and sends a signed SAML response to WordPress. The plugin validates the response and maps the identity and attributes to a WordPress account.
Both sides must be configured. The IdP needs WordPress’s SP Entity ID and Assertion Consumer Service (ACS) URL. WordPress needs the IdP’s issuer, sign-in endpoint, and signing certificate, commonly supplied together in IdP metadata. The ACS is where the IdP posts the response; it is not necessarily the ordinary WordPress login URL. Use the values generated by your plugin rather than guessing endpoints. See the setup options described in the miniOrange SAML plugin listing and Open Access SSO listing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before you begin
- Confirm that the WordPress site and SAML endpoints use HTTPS with a valid certificate.
- Check the selected plugin’s current WordPress, PHP, and extension requirements against your site. Requirements vary by plugin and may change; the miniOrange listing, for example, lists WordPress 3.7+, PHP 5.6+, and OpenSSL, cURL, and DOM, but verify its current requirements before installation.
- Make sure you can create or edit a SAML application in the IdP. An IdP offering only OAuth or OpenID Connect for the application cannot complete this SAML setup.
- Plan for a test account with limited permissions and a documented way for administrators to recover access if SSO fails.
Choose an SP plugin and configuration approach
Choose based on the site’s required IdP support, maintenance, security documentation, account provisioning, attribute and role mapping, support, and cost. The available approaches are not interchangeable in complexity or feature availability:

| Approach | What it offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Guided plugin dashboard | miniOrange documents a guided dashboard configuration and a connection-test feature; available features may depend on configuration or edition. Plugin listing. | Administrators who prefer a plugin interface and need its documented mapping or provisioning options. |
| Metadata file, URL, or manual entry | Open Access SSO documents importing metadata by file or URL, as well as manual entry. Plugin listing. | Administrators whose IdP provides metadata, or who need to enter the IdP values individually. |
| Settings interface or code filters | WP SAML Auth documents settings and code-filter configuration, with optional SimpleSAMLphp integration for more complex deployments. Plugin listing. | Sites whose maintainers want code-level configuration or a more customized integration. |
These are documented configuration choices, not an independent ranking of plugin security or quality. Confirm the exact features and support available in the version and edition you plan to use.
Set up the SAML connection
- Install and activate the SP plugin. In WordPress, use Plugins > Add New to find and install your chosen plugin, then activate it. Open its SAML or single sign-on settings.
- Get WordPress SP metadata. Find the plugin’s Service Provider Metadata screen or equivalent. Copy the SP Entity ID (sometimes labeled issuer) and ACS URL, or download the SP metadata XML if offered.
- Register WordPress as a SAML app in the IdP. Create an application in the IdP and enter or import the SP Entity ID and ACS URL from the plugin. The ACS must be the plugin-generated endpoint because that is where the IdP sends the response after authentication.
- Configure the IdP in WordPress. Import the IdP metadata XML file or metadata URL if the plugin supports it. If entering values manually, obtain the IdP Entity ID or issuer, SAML sign-in URL, and public X.509 signing certificate from the IdP.
- Set the identity and account behavior. Use the plugin’s test or attribute-inspection function, if available, to see which attributes the IdP sends. Map a stable identity field to the WordPress user and configure only the profile fields the site needs. Decide whether users must already exist or may be created at first login, and whether existing accounts may be linked. Where linking is supported, check which field is used for matching and whether the policy is appropriate; miniOrange documents linking by username or email, but that does not make either choice suitable for every organization.
- Choose a conservative WordPress role. Set the default role or role mapping deliberately. A successful authentication establishes identity; the assigned WordPress role determines what the user can do. Test with an account that should have limited access before applying broader mappings.
- Test both sides before enforcement. Run the plugin’s connection test if available, then complete a real login using the SSO flow your organization needs: IdP-initiated, SP-initiated, or both. Confirm that the expected WordPress account is used and that its role and profile are correct. Also verify that an invalid or denied login does not grant access and that administrators know how to recover access.
Plugin screens and IdP labels vary. Use the current documentation for your chosen plugin and IdP rather than copying endpoint values or menu paths from a different deployment.

Secure and maintain the integration
WordPress.org plugin listings document configuration features, not independent security audits. OWASP’s SAML Security Cheat Sheet provides general guidance for processing SAML safely; it does not certify a particular WordPress plugin. Review the chosen plugin’s implementation and deployment for these controls:
- Validate the response signature using the intended IdP signing certificate. Also validate issuer, audience, destination or ACS, recipient, request correlation where applicable, and assertion time bounds.
- Retrieve metadata over TLS and verify its source before trusting a signing key. Metadata and certificates determine which IdP the SP trusts.
- Use assertion validity periods short enough for the deployment, with clocks synchronized between WordPress and the IdP. Investigate clock skew rather than extending validity unnecessarily.
- Use replay detection and avoid caching SAML protocol messages.
- Release and consume only necessary attributes, and assign the least-privileged WordPress role that meets the user’s needs.
- Review first-login provisioning and account-linking rules before enabling them broadly, especially when matching by email or username.
Plan for signing-certificate rotation and metadata refresh. Open Access SSO documents an optional scheduled metadata retrieval feature for checking certificate rotation; availability and automation differ by plugin, so confirm the selected implementation’s behavior.

Fix common SAML login failures
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The IdP rejects the WordPress application | Compare the IdP’s configured Entity ID and ACS URL with the exact values in the plugin’s SP metadata. Confirm the ACS uses HTTPS. |
| WordPress rejects the response | Check the IdP issuer, sign-in endpoint, current signing certificate, and metadata import. Verify signature validation and the response destination and audience. |
| “Expired” or “NotOnOrAfter” error | Compare the WordPress server and IdP clocks first. Correct synchronization problems before changing assertion validity periods. |
| Signature or certificate parsing error | Confirm that the IdP certificate is current and correctly formatted. A certificate character-encoding option is documented by miniOrange as a plugin-specific troubleshooting setting; it is not a general SAML requirement. |
| Login works, but the wrong user or role appears | Inspect the attributes returned by the IdP and review the plugin’s identity, attribute, default-role, and role-mapping settings. |
| Unexpected account creation or linking | Review first-login provisioning and account-matching rules, then restrict or disable those behaviors until they match the organization’s access policy. |
When to enforce SSO
Enforce SSO only after the intended login flows work, account identity and least-privilege role assignments are verified, and the administrator recovery route is documented. Keep a process for certificate changes and metadata updates, and retest the connection when those settings change.
