The simplest way to offer installments in WooCommerce is to enable a supported buy now, pay later (BNPL) provider through WooPayments. After onboarding, go to Payments > Settings > Buy now, pay later and enable the providers available for your business account. Customers repay the provider over time; the merchant receives the completed transaction amount.

Before you enable installments

WooCommerce does not provide installment financing on its own. A payment provider such as Affirm, Afterpay/Clearpay, or Klarna supplies the payment plan and collects the installments from the shopper.

  • Confirm that your business country and chosen provider are supported, and that your store uses a supported currency.
  • WooPayments requires HTTPS, supported current versions of PHP, WordPress, and WooCommerce, and an account holder who is at least 18 years old.
  • Be prepared to complete WooPayments onboarding and Stripe verification. A provider may also require separate merchant approval.

The exact software requirements and supported countries can change. Check the provider’s current eligibility requirements for your account before configuring checkout.

Choose one integration path

WooPayments is the most direct starting point if it supports your business and the BNPL provider you want. Other integrations can make sense if you already use the official Stripe extension or need features specific to a financing provider.

Integration Best fit What to account for
WooPayments A store seeking a straightforward route to supported BNPL methods. Complete WooPayments onboarding, then enable methods available to your account country. Provider, currency, shopper location, and cart eligibility still apply.
Official Stripe WooCommerce extension A store already using that extension or preferring its payment setup. It supports Affirm, Afterpay, and Klarna. Check its country and currency coverage and the shopper checkout flow against your requirements.
Standalone Affirm extension A merchant needing Affirm-specific controls. Affirm must approve the business; setup also requires public and private API keys, approved financing disclosures, and required shopper identity fields.
Standalone Klarna plugin A merchant needing Klarna storefront or checkout features beyond accepting payments. Features include on-site messaging, Sign in with Klarna, and Express Checkout. Klarna says Payments and Order Management are included in the same plugin from version 4.3.0.

WooPayments and other payment platforms can also enable Klarna. If your store already uses WooPayments, check its payment methods before installing a separate Klarna plugin.

Set up BNPL with WooPayments

  1. Open WooCommerce payment settings. In the WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce’s payment settings and install or connect WooPayments.
  2. Complete onboarding. Follow the account setup and Stripe verification steps. Do not treat the method as ready for live checkout until verification and any required provider approval are complete.
  3. Open the BNPL settings. Go to Payments > Settings > Buy now, pay later.
  4. Enable eligible providers. Turn on the methods offered for your merchant account country. WooPayments documents Affirm, Afterpay/Clearpay, and Klarna, but not every provider is available in every country.
  5. Review product and cart messaging. Check that promotional messages appear only where the provider’s eligibility rules allow them, including eligible products and cart totals.

Affirm’s standalone setup is different: its official documentation says the business must be approved by Affirm, and the extension requires API keys, approved financing disclosures, and shopper identity fields. Install and configure that extension through WordPress admin, then confirm it appears as a WooCommerce payment method.

Check country, currency, and shopper eligibility

Provider availability is determined by more than the store’s address. The merchant account country, customer billing country, currency, and cart total can all affect whether a payment option appears. The plans offered to a particular shopper also depend on purchase amount, location, and currency.

WooPayments’ documented examples include Affirm in the United States and Canada; Afterpay in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom; and Klarna in the United States, United Kingdom, and many European countries. These examples are not a guarantee that a method will be available for every account, shopper, currency, or order. Verify eligibility for your specific setup in the provider’s current documentation and account settings.

What happens at checkout and after payment

When a shopper chooses BNPL, WooPayments sends them to the provider to sign in or create an account, select an available plan, and accept the provider’s terms. The shopper then returns to your store to complete checkout. The provider, not the merchant, determines the financing terms and collects the shopper’s installments.

Once the transaction completes, WooPayments says the merchant receives the entire purchase amount immediately. The order appears in WooCommerce Orders, and its transaction is available under Payments > Transactions. The merchant’s collection schedule is therefore different from the shopper’s repayment schedule.

WooCommerce and Stripe described offering Affirm and Klarna as potentially producing “up to a 14% increase in revenue” in 2025. This is a vendor claim about a possible result, not a promised or independently established outcome for an individual store.

Test the setup before accepting live orders

  1. Use a supported test or sandbox transaction for your selected integration, if available.
  2. Check that eligible shoppers see the intended provider and that ineligible carts do not show misleading promotional messaging.
  3. Verify the resulting order status in WooCommerce Orders and the transaction record in Payments > Transactions.
  4. Test the store’s refund handling and confirm the records are clear to the staff who will manage orders.
  5. Before launch, check that the same BNPL provider is not enabled through multiple plugins. WooCommerce warns that duplicate enablement can confuse customers.

After those checks pass, publish the method for live checkout and monitor orders and transaction records as you would for other payment methods.
