To track Google Ads conversions on a WordPress site, create a website conversion action in Google Ads, install the Google tag or deploy it through Google Tag Manager, and configure an event that fires when the valuable action actually happens. Then test the event and check its status in Google Ads. A simple confirmation-page visit can often use URL-based setup; form completions, button clicks and purchases with changing values usually need event-based tracking.

What you need before you start

A conversion is an action you choose to count as valuable, such as a completed purchase or confirmed lead. Google Ads needs a website conversion action and a tag/event implementation to measure it, unless you import an eligible event from a linked Google Analytics property. Google’s web conversion setup guide walks through creating the action and choosing a measurement method.

  • Access to the Google Ads account where the conversion action will be created.
  • Access to your WordPress site’s code or a tag-management tool that is already installed.
  • A clear definition of the completed action: for example, a purchase confirmation or a successfully submitted lead form.
  • For purchases, the source of the actual order value, currency and, if used, transaction ID.

Before adding anything, check whether the site already loads a Google tag, Google Analytics integration or Google Tag Manager container. Multiple overlapping installations can cause duplicate tags or conversion counts.

Choose the right conversion tracking method

Method Best fit Trade-off
URL-based setup A distinct thank-you or confirmation page reached after the action. Simple to configure, but not suited to complex event logic or dynamic transaction details.
Google tag with event code Button clicks, purchases with dynamic values, transaction IDs or custom business logic. Offers more control but requires code placement and careful event validation.
Google Tag Manager Teams that want to manage tags and triggers centrally. Flexible, but the container, trigger and conversion ID/label must be configured consistently.
Google Analytics import Reusing an eligible Analytics key event when the accounts are linked. Requires correct account linkage and permissions; imported Analytics conversions are not supported for enhanced conversions.

Google says account linkage or newly marked key events can take 24 to 48 hours to propagate before conversion-import options appear; this is setup guidance, not a guaranteed service interval. See Google’s web conversion setup instructions.

For lead generation, count a completed submission or confirmed lead rather than a visit to the form. For ecommerce, use the real order value and currency when the conversion action is intended to represent revenue. URL-based setup is appropriate only when the page view reliably represents the completed action.

Create a website conversion action in Google Ads

  1. In Google Ads, open Goals and go to the conversion summary.
  2. Choose to create a conversion action, then select the website data source and enter your site’s domain.
  3. Review the detected tagging options. If Google finds an existing tag or linked Google Analytics property, you may be able to use that source; otherwise, continue with tag setup.
  4. Choose URL-based measurement for a simple, distinct confirmation-page load, or code/event-based measurement when the action needs a button trigger, dynamic values, a transaction ID or other custom logic.
  5. Complete the conversion action settings and note the Google tag instructions and any conversion ID or label provided for the chosen implementation.

The labels and screens in Google Ads may change. Use Google’s current setup guide if the interface differs from these broad navigation steps.

Add the Google tag to WordPress

Google’s tag instructions describe a Google tag used across the site and an event snippet associated with the conversion event or page. The site-wide tag is generally placed in the page head; the event code must run only when the intended conversion happens.

WordPress does not have one required Google Ads plugin. Use a reliable method that fits your site—such as an existing tag-management setup or a code insertion method you can maintain—and verify that it places the tag on the public pages where needed. Do not add a second copy through a plugin or theme code if an existing integration already installs the same tag.

Use a confirmation page for a simple conversion

If a completed action reliably sends the visitor to a separate confirmation URL, configure the conversion to count that page view. Ensure the page cannot be reached through unrelated navigation or by merely opening the form. If the URL can be refreshed or revisited, consider whether that could count the same action more than once and choose a more suitable event implementation if necessary.

Use event code for clicks or dynamic purchase details

For a form submission or purchase that does not produce a dependable, unique confirmation page, trigger the conversion event when the action succeeds—not when the submit button is merely clicked. For purchases, pass the actual transaction value and currency, and use a transaction ID if the implementation supports it. A click can fail validation or payment, so it is not necessarily equivalent to a completed conversion.

Deploy Google Ads tracking with Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager is an alternative way to deploy the Google tag and conversion events without directly editing page code for every tag. Google’s conversion tracking guidance describes using a Conversion Linker tag that fires on all pages so ad-click information in landing URLs can be stored in first-party cookies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the intended Tag Manager container is installed on the WordPress site and that no duplicate container is loading.
  2. In Tag Manager, configure the Google Ads conversion tag using the conversion ID and label from the Google Ads action.
  3. Add a Conversion Linker tag with an all-pages trigger, as described in Google’s guidance.
  4. Set the conversion tag’s trigger to the completed action: for example, a confirmed form success event or a purchase event, not merely a form-page view.
  5. Test the container and event behavior before publishing changes. Confirm that the conversion tag fires once, at the right time, and with valid value and currency variables where applicable.

Google Tag Manager does not remove the need to choose the right conversion action or event. An incorrectly configured trigger can still miss conversions or count the wrong activity.

Test the event and check its status

  1. Load the public WordPress site and complete a test journey that matches the intended conversion, including the successful end of the form or checkout flow.
  2. Use Tag Assistant to investigate Google tag issues and confirm that the relevant tag is present.
  3. Check the conversion action’s status in Google Ads. Confirm the event fires on the correct page or event, with the correct conversion ID/label where applicable.
  4. For dynamic conversions, inspect the values sent with the event, including currency and transaction ID if used.

A tag appearing on a page proves only that code loaded; it does not establish that Google Ads received a correctly configured conversion. Allow for reporting and status updates to appear in the account, and use the status and diagnostics rather than relying on a successful page load alone.

Optional: set up enhanced conversions

Enhanced conversions supplement existing conversion tags with hashed first-party customer data, such as an email address, to help Google match conversions with signed-in Google accounts. Google describes SHA-256 hashing and setup through either the Google tag or Tag Manager. This is optional and should be enabled only when the site can supply the appropriate data and the business can comply with Google’s customer data policies and Data Processing Terms.

Google’s documented selector-based route requires at least one relevant user-provided field to be available on the conversion page; implementation may require code changes and developer knowledge. The setup must match the actual source and timing of the data being sent. See enhanced conversions with the Google tag and enhanced conversions with Google Tag Manager.

Google’s current guidance says enhanced-conversion settings for web and leads were combined into a single on/off setting. It also says that, starting in April 2026, Google Ads accepts user-provided data from website tags, Data Manager and API connections; Analytics-imported conversions are not supported for enhanced conversions. Interface and eligibility details can change, so check Google’s current instructions before configuration. Google says enhanced conversion impact results may appear after about 30 days; that is a reporting interval, not a promised performance improvement. See Google’s enhanced conversion impact guidance.

Fix common setup problems

Google Ads does not detect a tag

Check that the Google tag is loading on the public site, not only in a logged-in editor or preview. Review existing integrations before adding another copy, then rescan or continue Google Ads tag setup.

The conversion is inactive or unverified

Review the conversion action status, confirm that its event trigger matches the completed action, and inspect Tag Assistant findings. A correctly loaded site-wide tag does not guarantee that the conversion event fires.

Conversions are counted twice

Look for duplicate Google tag installations from plugins, theme code or separate integrations; duplicate Tag Manager containers; and multiple triggers for the same action. Remove overlapping paths only after identifying which integration is responsible for the intended measurement.

A form or button conversion is missing

A URL-based rule may not fit an action that completes without a distinct confirmation page. Use event-based code or a suitable Tag Manager trigger, and make it fire after a successful submission rather than on the initial click.

Purchase value or currency is wrong

Use an event-based implementation when the value changes from transaction to transaction. Verify that the event sends the intended order amount, currency and transaction ID, rather than a fixed value or a value from an unrelated page.

Enhanced conversions do not appear

Check that the conversion action is configured for the source actually sending user-provided data, that the relevant field is available when the conversion fires, and that the chosen collection method matches the implementation. Analytics-imported conversions are not supported for enhanced conversions under Google’s cited guidance.
