You can use an iCloud Mail address in Outlook, Thunderbird, Gmail, or another compatible email app. If the app offers Apple Account sign-in, use that authorization flow. Otherwise, add the account with IMAP and SMTP, and use an Apple app-specific password if the client asks for a password it can accept.
The steps below cover both methods, including the server settings and the common case where mail arrives but will not send. Menu names can change; Outlook steps reflect Microsoft’s documentation available as of August 2026.
iCloud Mail settings at a glance
Use these values when setting up a client manually. iCloud Mail supports IMAP and SMTP, not POP. Apple’s full settings guidance is at Apple Support.

Apple says to try TLS or STARTTLS if an SSL setting causes an error. Do not use port 25, a plaintext connection, or POP. The incoming and outgoing usernames are a notable difference: Apple documents the local part as the usual IMAP username, but requires the full address for SMTP.

Choose the right setup method

An iCloud Mail address may end in @icloud.com, or use a legacy @me.com or @mac.com address. iCloud custom-domain addresses and aliases are also possible, but clients do not all handle them identically. Having an Apple Account does not necessarily mean you have an active iCloud Mail mailbox; first make sure iCloud Mail has been created or enabled.
Before you begin
- Confirm that your iCloud Mail address works at iCloud.com Mail.
- Have your Apple Account credentials and a trusted Apple device or trusted phone number available if Apple requests a verification code.
- For manual setup, make sure two-factor authentication is enabled on your Apple Account. Apple requires it for app-specific passwords.
- Use a mail client that supports current TLS encryption and IMAP.
- Decide whether the client offers Apple Account authorization. Apple recommends authorization for supported third-party apps; unsupported clients can use an app-specific password. See Apple’s authorization guidance.
Method 1: Sign in with your Apple Account
In a client that supports Apple authorization, choose its Apple or iCloud sign-in option and enter your iCloud Mail address. The app may open a browser window for Apple Account sign-in. Complete two-factor authentication if asked, review the requested access, select Allow if you want to proceed, then return to the mail client.
This route avoids entering your main Apple Account password into the mail app and avoids manually typing server details. It is not available in every client, and authorization does not guarantee support for Apple-only features such as iCloud Mail rules, Hide My Email, custom-domain management, calendars, or contacts.
You can review or remove authorized third-party apps under Account Data Sharing at account.apple.com. If an alias or address change causes the client to stop connecting, removing its access and authorizing it again may help.
Method 2: Generate an app-specific password
A manual IMAP/SMTP setup commonly needs an app-specific password rather than your normal Apple Account password. It is a distinct credential for an app, not a one-time verification code. Apple’s steps and password rules are in its app-specific password guide.

- Go to account.apple.com and sign in.
- Open Sign-In and Security, then select App-Specific Passwords.
- Select Generate an app-specific password.
- Give it a recognizable label, such as
Thunderbird,Android Mail, orOutlook Classic. - Copy the generated password and paste it into the mail client’s password field. Keep it private.
Apple allows up to 25 active app-specific passwords. Create a separate one for each client when practical, and revoke credentials for apps or devices you no longer use. If you change or reset your main Apple Account password, Apple revokes all app-specific passwords; generate replacements for any clients that need them.
Method 3: Add iCloud Mail to a generic IMAP client
- Choose Add account, then select Other, IMAP, or Manual setup.
- Enter your display name and iCloud Mail address.
- For incoming mail, choose IMAP and enter
imap.mail.me.com, port993, with SSL/TLS enabled. Use the part of the address before@icloud.comas the username first; if the client rejects it, try the full address. - For outgoing mail, enter
smtp.mail.me.com, port587, and SSL/TLS or STARTTLS. Turn on SMTP authentication. - Use your full iCloud Mail address for the SMTP username and the same app-specific password for the outgoing password.
- Save the account, then test sending and receiving separately.
Some clients ask for incoming and outgoing settings on separate screens. Do not assume that an account that can download messages is also correctly configured to send them.

Outlook for Windows
New Outlook
Microsoft documents an Apple authorization flow for New Outlook. The exact menu may differ by app version. In the documented flow:
- Open New Outlook. On the View tab, select View settings; in some versions, use File > Account info.
- Select Accounts > Your accounts, then Add Account.
- Enter your iCloud email address and select Continue.
- On Sync your iCloud account, select Continue.
- In the browser window, sign in to your Apple Account and complete two-factor authentication if prompted.
- Review the permission request, select Allow, then return to Outlook and select Done.
If authorization fails, Microsoft recommends trying again or selecting Advanced setup. See Microsoft’s Outlook instructions.
Classic Outlook
- Select File > Add Account.
- Enter your iCloud email address and select Connect.
- If the regular password fails, or Outlook asks for a password while two-factor authentication is enabled, generate an Apple app-specific password.
- Restart the add-account process, paste the app-specific password when prompted, and select Connect, then Done.
If automatic setup does not work, look for Advanced setup or the account’s server-settings screen and enter the manual IMAP/SMTP values above. New Outlook and Classic Outlook do not necessarily use the same menus or authorization flow. Apple lists Outlook 2021 or later as a supported Windows authorization route; requirements can vary by feature and geography. Check Apple’s current system requirements.

Outlook mobile and other Android mail apps
In Outlook mobile, Microsoft’s documented generic path is to tap your avatar in the upper-left corner, tap the gear icon, then under Mail Accounts choose Add Mail Account > Add Email Account. Enter the iCloud address and follow the provider sign-in prompts. Depending on the app and account, you may be asked to sign in through Apple or enter an app-specific password.

Apple Mail on iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Apple Mail normally uses the device’s iCloud account settings, rather than asking you to enter IMAP and SMTP values manually. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud and enable Mail or the relevant iCloud feature. On Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > iCloud and enable it. Apple’s iCloud setup guide covers device setup. If you want Apple-integrated features on Windows rather than just mail in a generic client, Apple also offers iCloud for Windows.
Test both directions
- From another email address, send a new message to the iCloud address and confirm it appears in the client.
- Reply from the iCloud client, or compose a fresh message to the other address. Confirm it arrives.
- Check a folder, read/unread state, and deletion state against iCloud.com or another configured client. Allow for the client’s normal sync interval.
IMAP synchronizes mail and mailbox state, but clients may organize local folders differently or update at different intervals. A third-party mail setup does not by itself configure iCloud calendars or contacts.

“Incorrect password” or repeated sign-in prompts
- For manual setup, make sure you used an app-specific password, not the normal Apple Account password.
- Confirm two-factor authentication is enabled and that the password was copied exactly.
- If you recently changed or reset your Apple Account password, generate a new app-specific password; old ones were revoked.
- Check the spelling of the account address. If the client uses Apple authorization, retry the browser sign-in and approval flow.
- If repeated attempts have left a broken profile, remove that account from the client and add it again with the correct method and credentials.
You can receive mail but cannot send
Check the outgoing settings specifically: server smtp.mail.me.com, port 587, authentication enabled, and SSL/TLS or STARTTLS. Use the full iCloud Mail address as the SMTP username and the app-specific password as its password. A short username that works for incoming IMAP can still cause SMTP authentication to fail.

You can send but cannot receive
Check that incoming mail uses IMAP server imap.mail.me.com, port 993, and SSL/TLS. If the client reports an SSL negotiation error, try its TLS option. If authentication fails with the local-part username, try the full iCloud email address. Also verify that iCloud Mail is enabled for the account.
The client reports an SSL or TLS error
Confirm the port and encryption mode match the table. For incoming mail, use port 993 with SSL/TLS. For SMTP, use port 587 with SSL/TLS or STARTTLS. Apple notes that a client reporting an SSL error may need TLS or STARTTLS instead. Do not disable encryption to get around the error; update or replace a client that cannot use current TLS.
The app insists on POP
iCloud Mail does not support POP. Choose IMAP or use a different client that supports IMAP and TLS.
Folders are missing or messages appear twice
Check that you have only one active iCloud profile and that the client is not showing both local and server copies. Some apps require you to subscribe to IMAP folders. Compare the mailbox with iCloud.com before deleting messages, and confirm that an import did not place messages only in a local folder.

Aliases and custom-domain addresses are not handled identically by every client. A client may need the primary iCloud Mail account for sign-in even if you want to send from an alias, and sending from an alternate From address depends on that client’s support. Apple’s generic server settings do not establish a universal custom-domain username rule. Confirm the account works at iCloud.com, then check the particular client’s address and From-address options rather than changing server values at random.

Security and feature limits
Prefer Apple authorization when the client supports it. For manual connections, use a unique app-specific password, keep TLS enabled, and avoid entering Apple credentials in unknown software. Because IMAP synchronizes messages to the client, messages may be stored or cached on that device; use a device you trust and protect it with a passcode or account security.
Third-party IMAP setup is for email. It does not guarantee the same support for iCloud Mail rules, Hide My Email, Mail Privacy Protection, custom-domain administration, calendars, or contacts that Apple’s own apps provide. For a broader Apple-device setup, see Apple’s compatibility guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use iCloud Mail on Android?
Yes. Use a mail app that supports Apple authorization, or configure it manually with iCloud IMAP and SMTP settings. Manual setup may require an app-specific password.
Does iCloud Mail support POP?
No. Use IMAP, or choose a mail client that supports IMAP.
Do I need an app-specific password?
For manual setup in a client that does not use Apple Account authorization, usually yes. Apple requires two-factor authentication to create one. Supported apps may instead use Apple authorization.
Can I use an @me.com or @mac.com address?
These are legacy iCloud Mail address types. They may work, but alias and address handling can vary by client; verify the account and sending address in that client.
Will my calendar and contacts sync when I add iCloud Mail to a third-party client?
Not necessarily. IMAP configures email; calendar and contact synchronization are separate and depend on the client and its Apple integration.
