On the console, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, choose Set Up Wired LAN > Connect, then verify it at Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Sony’s instructions are available at PlayStation Support.
What you need
- A PS5 with a working built-in LAN port.
- An Ethernet/LAN cable long enough to reach the network equipment.
- An available LAN port on your router, or on an unmanaged switch connected to the router.
- An active internet service and router.
Sony specifies a LAN cable but does not require Cat6, Cat7 or a particular brand. For ordinary home networking, a reputable Cat5e or better cable is generally suitable. Choose a length that avoids tension, sharp bends and trip hazards. Expensive “gaming” cable branding does not by itself improve PS5 performance.
The PS5 already has a network port, so a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is normally unnecessary.
Connect the PS5 to your router or switch
- Find the Ethernet/LAN port on the rear of the console. Port placement and the surrounding layout vary between PS5 models and revisions; use the connector’s familiar wide, clip-shaped Ethernet opening rather than assuming it is in one fixed position. Sony’s hardware documentation is at PlayStation Support and its safety guide at PS5 Safety Guide.
- Plug one end of the cable into the PS5 until the retaining clip clicks.
- Plug the other end into a numbered LAN port on the router or switch. Do not use the router’s WAN/Internet port for the console. A combined ISP modem/router gateway uses its LAN ports. With separate modem and router equipment, connect to the router.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Set Up Wired LAN > Connect. Menu capitalization or wording can vary slightly with system software and regional localization.
You do not need to delete or manually disable saved Wi‑Fi networks first. Choosing the wired setup configures the LAN connection while allowing saved wireless networks to remain available for later use.

Verify the wired connection
Open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. The test checks whether the PS5 obtained an IP address, reached the internet and connected to PlayStation Network. Sony documents this path at NP-104627-0 support.
- Check that both cable ends remain firmly latched.
- Look for a link or activity light on the router or switch port.
- After a successful test, launch an online game or download a small update.
A passing test proves network access, not that every game server or PlayStation service is operating normally. Download speed is limited by the internet plan, router, cable, network equipment, server capacity and congestion. Ethernet often improves consistency and removes local wireless interference, but it does not guarantee a higher measured speed or lower end-to-end latency.
Router, modem and switch choices
Router versus modem
Connect the PS5 to a router LAN port. Do not normally connect it directly to a telephone, coaxial or fiber ONT socket. If a standalone modem provides no routing or DHCP service, a direct console connection can fail or expose the console to an unsuitable network arrangement. A direct modem connection is appropriate only when that device specifically functions as the router and the ISP permits it.
Using an Ethernet switch
Use a switch when the router is too far away or its LAN ports are full:

- Connect one switch port to a LAN port on the router.
- Connect the PS5 to another switch port.
- Leave the PS5 wired settings on automatic/default values.
An ordinary unmanaged gigabit switch adds wired ports; it does not create internet service or inherently increase speed. A managed switch is unnecessary for a single PS5 and can add configuration work.
Long cable, mesh or powerline

For a single console, a long cable is usually simpler than buying a complete mesh system. A switch is useful when distance or port count—not internet speed—is the problem.
Troubleshoot “LAN cable not connected” or no internet
- Reseat the cable at both ends and confirm it is in the PS5 LAN port and a router or switch LAN port.
- Try a different LAN port on the router or switch.
- Replace the cable with one known to work.
- Restart the PS5.
- Power off the router or gateway, wait at least five minutes, and turn it back on, following Sony’s troubleshooting guidance at NW-102379-2 support.
- Check whether another device on the same network can access the internet.
- Check PlayStation Network service status through Sony’s connectivity support hub.
- Return to Set Up Internet Connection, select the wired option again and run the connection test.
- Check the router configuration for IPv4 availability, DHCP and device restrictions.
- If the console reaches the router but not PSN, investigate router filtering, NAT, an ISP outage or a PlayStation service issue.
Managed and public networks
Hotel, dormitory, office and apartment networks may require captive-portal sign-in, MAC-address registration or administrator approval. The PS5 cannot bypass those access-control policies. Ask the network administrator to authorize the console.
IPv6-only networks
PS5 supports IPv6 but not an IPv6-only network. The router must also provide IPv4 connectivity. If a newer ISP gateway is configured as IPv6-only, enable dual-stack or IPv4 according to the router manufacturer’s instructions; Sony discusses this limitation at PlayStation internet connectivity support.

Should you change IP, DNS, MTU or proxy settings?
Normally, no. In the wired connection’s Advanced Settings, Sony lists these options:
- IP address: Usually supplied automatically by the router’s DHCP service.
- DHCP host name: Leave unspecified unless the ISP requires a particular value.
- DNS: Translates service names into network addresses. Changing it can help with a diagnosed DNS problem, but it is not a universal speed or gaming fix.
- MTU: Controls packet size. Manual values are not a routine optimization.
- Proxy: Leave disabled unless the network administrator specifically requires one.
Sony advises users who are unfamiliar with these values to consult their ISP or network administrator. Avoid copying arbitrary “best DNS” or “best MTU” numbers from generic gaming guides.
When a wired connection does not solve multiplayer problems
Separate these four conditions:
- Internet access: The PS5 can reach the wider internet.
- PSN access: PlayStation services are reachable.
- Game-server access: A particular game’s servers are available and reachable.
- NAT behavior: The router controls how readily the console communicates with other players.
Ethernet can remove weak-signal and radio-interference problems, but it cannot repair a PSN or game-server outage, upstream ISP congestion, high latency elsewhere, packet loss outside the home or strict NAT imposed by the router or ISP.
Port forwarding and static IP
Do not begin ordinary setup with port forwarding. For specific connection errors, Sony lists these PlayStation-related ports at NW-102650-4 support: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479 and 3480; UDP 3478, 3479 and 49152–65535. Those figures are troubleshooting information, not a universal instruction to forward every port.

Port forwarding is router-specific and can create security or configuration problems. A static local IP is mainly useful for a deliberate forwarding setup; if you use one, it must match the router’s subnet and avoid conflicts with its DHCP range. Automatic DHCP remains the normal choice.

Does Ethernet make PS5 downloads faster?
It can make downloads more consistent when Wi‑Fi interference or signal strength is the bottleneck, but it cannot exceed the limits of your internet service, equipment, server or congestion.
Do I need Cat6?
No specific category is required by Sony. A sound, correctly terminated Cat5e-or-better cable is generally adequate for typical home networking.
Can I connect the PS5 directly to the modem?
Use the router unless the ISP device is explicitly a router with DHCP and routing enabled. A standalone modem may not provide the network services the PS5 needs.

Do I need to turn off Wi‑Fi?
No. Selecting Set Up Wired LAN > Connect configures the wired connection without requiring you to erase saved wireless networks.
Why does the internet test pass but a game remain offline?
The game’s servers, PSN, NAT policy or the ISP may be the problem. Check service status and the game publisher’s server status before changing advanced settings.
Can a wired connection improve NAT type?
It may remove wireless instability, but NAT type is determined primarily by router and ISP behavior. Ethernet alone does not guarantee an open NAT.
The Bottom Line
For the normal setup, use a reliable Ethernet cable from the PS5 to a router or switch, select Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect, and run the connection test. Leave advanced values automatic unless a specific network diagnosis calls for a change.
