To connect an AI assistant to a browser, install Node.js 20 or newer, add the Playwright MCP server to your MCP client, and decide whether the browser should run visibly or headlessly. That gives the assistant structured browser automation; it does not make the browser undetectable. A separate stealth-oriented project uses Chrome-family browsers through nodriver, but its own documentation cautions that detection varies by site, region, browser version, IP reputation, and detector version.
What a stealth browser MCP server does—and does not do
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, lets a compatible AI client connect to tools exposed by a server. Playwright MCP gives an assistant browser automation through structured accessibility snapshots: the assistant can inspect page content and interact with a site through browser controls rather than relying only on a screenshot.
“Stealth” describes an effort to reduce signals that can trigger bot detection. It is not a standard MCP setting or a guarantee that a website will treat an automated session like a human visitor. The open-source Stealth Browser MCP project takes a different implementation approach from Playwright MCP: it uses real Chrome-family browser instances through nodriver and exposes local browser-control primitives. Its stated caveats matter: results can vary with the site, region, browser version, IP reputation, and detector version.

Independent research also reports that web agents can be identified through multiple layers of fingerprinting, and that some stealth mechanisms can increase detectability. There is no validated universal success rate or reliable setting that bypasses every anti-bot system. Use these tools for authorized testing and workflows, and evaluate them on the specific site and region you are permitted to access.

Set up Playwright MCP in a local client
1. Install the prerequisites
Install Node.js version 20 or newer and an MCP-compatible client, such as VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, or Claude Desktop. Confirm Node is available in the same environment that will launch the MCP server by running:
node --version
npx --versionThe Node version should be 20 or newer. If the command is missing or reports an older version, install or select a current Node release before configuring the server.
2. Add the server to your MCP configuration
The standard Playwright MCP configuration launches the package through npx:

The precise location and whether the client expects a file or a graphical settings form vary by client; use that client’s MCP setup instructions. Save the configuration and restart or reload the client if it does not discover the server immediately. The @latest tag asks npm to resolve the current package release when the command runs, so for controlled deployments consider how you will review updates rather than treating the version as fixed.
3. Confirm the connection before adding stealth controls
Check the client’s MCP server status or logs and verify that Playwright tools are available. Try a low-impact page that you own or are authorized to test. Confirm the server can open the page, read its content, and perform an ordinary interaction before introducing proxies, persistent profiles, or stealth-specific components. Keeping the initial setup simple makes configuration errors easier to isolate.

Choose browser visibility, engine, and session state
Headed or headless
Playwright MCP runs headed by default, which means the browser is visible on a display. To request headless operation, add --headless to the server arguments:

}Headless is useful on machines without a desktop session or where you do not need to watch the browser. Headed mode is useful when diagnosing a navigation, consent prompt, or interaction by observing what the browser actually displays. Neither mode guarantees a different anti-bot outcome; treat it as an operational choice, not an evasion switch.
Browser engine
The documented browser choices include Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge. Select an engine supported by the server and available in your environment using its browser option. The exact argument syntax and installation requirements should be checked in the current Playwright MCP documentation for the release you install; do not assume every engine is installed just because it is listed as an option.
Persistent versus isolated profiles
A persistent profile retains browser data such as cookies and login state between sessions. This can be useful for an authorized workflow that needs a signed-in account, but it also preserves sensitive session material on disk. Use an explicit --user-data-dir when you need to choose where that persistent profile lives.
Isolated profiles start fresh and keep storage in memory. They are a better fit for repeatable tests that should not inherit prior cookies or local state. Choose deliberately: an isolated profile will not retain a login from an earlier run, while a persistent profile can carry forward state you may not intend to reuse.

Run the server over HTTP when a client needs a URL
For a client or deployment that connects to a standalone server rather than launching it over stdio, start Playwright MCP on a port:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931Configure the client to connect to the MCP endpoint at http://localhost:8931/mcp. The documentation describes an HTTP-session heartbeat and names PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_PING_TIMEOUT_MS as the environment variable for adjusting its timeout. If a session disconnects unexpectedly, check client and server logs and the heartbeat configuration before assuming the browser itself failed.
Keep this endpoint on a trusted interface and restrict which clients can reach it. Do not expose an unauthenticated browser-control endpoint to the public internet. If the client and server are on separate machines, confirm the network path, firewall rules, and authentication model before enabling access; a reachable port alone is not a safe deployment.
Configure proxy routing and evaluate a stealth implementation
Proxy settings
Playwright MCP documents --proxy-server and --proxy-bypass for environments that require network routing through a proxy or exclude selected addresses from proxying. Use a proxy only where you have authorization and a legitimate operational reason, such as reproducing a regional network condition. Confirm that the target can be reached through the chosen route and that credentials or routing rules are not exposed in logs or shared configuration.
When to consider Stealth Browser MCP
If your task specifically needs the nodriver-based, Chrome-family approach, evaluate the Stealth Browser MCP project separately from the standard Playwright MCP setup. Its documented controls include bearer-token environment variables, idle and orphan-profile cleanup settings, and a stdio setup path. Those details are project-specific and may change; consult the project’s current README for exact installation commands and variable names. Do not infer command-line flags for this implementation from Playwright MCP flags.

Test the exact authorized target, region, browser version, network route, and detector conditions you care about. Record whether the page loads, whether the intended content is available, and whether the session remains stable across runs. A successful session on one site or network is not evidence of universal bypass, and behavior can change as site defenses or browser versions change.
Security boundaries to set before connecting an AI client
Playwright’s documentation warns: “This tool runs arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is RCE-equivalent — only enable it for trusted MCP clients.” Treat access to the server as access to a powerful process, not as a harmless read-only browser feature.
- Connect only MCP clients and users you trust; review which tools and workflows they can invoke.
- Keep HTTP transport on trusted interfaces, restrict inbound access, and use authentication where the implementation supports it.
- Use a dedicated browser profile for automation instead of reusing a personal profile with unrelated accounts and sessions.
- Do not place API keys, cookies, or other secrets in prompts, shared configuration, or logs unless the workflow explicitly requires them and storage is controlled.
- Use the least access necessary and test against sites and accounts you are authorized to operate.
Troubleshoot common setup failures

Performance, reliability, and operating cost
Local stdio is the simplest starting point when one client launches the server on the same machine. Standalone HTTP is useful when a client needs to connect to an already-running service, but adds a network endpoint, session heartbeat, and access-control responsibilities. Headless operation avoids the need to observe a visible window; persistent profiles preserve state but need storage and cleanup care. These are deployment trade-offs, not measured speed guarantees.
The available documentation provides configuration guidance and project caveats, not an authoritative anti-bot performance statistic, universal bypass rate, or benchmark. Reliability should be judged against your permitted target and actual environment. A site update, browser update, changed IP reputation, or changed detector can alter results; plan for ordinary failures and do not make a workflow depend on guaranteed access where the site has not authorized it.

Is stealth browser automation appropriate for every site?
No. Use automation only where you have permission, and follow the site’s access rules. A stealth mechanism is not authorization to bypass a site’s controls.
