Configure the proxy before creating your Selenium WebDriver session. In Selenium 4, create a Proxy object, set its HTTP/SSL or SOCKS endpoint, attach it to browser options, and then start the driver. Selenium selects the endpoint; it does not itself rotate the upstream IP on every navigation. Rotation comes from your proxy provider’s gateway or from replacing the endpoint by starting a new browser session.
What Selenium can—and cannot—rotate
Selenium’s proxy setting tells the browser where to send requests. The Selenium project describes a proxy server as “an intermediary for requests between a client and a server.” Its Python API exposes HTTP, SSL and SOCKS fields, while browser options accept a Proxy object (Proxy API; Browser Options).
That configuration is different from IP rotation:
- Provider-managed rotation: you configure one gateway address. The provider changes the upstream address according to its own rules, such as per request, time interval or a session identifier. Selenium continues using the same gateway.
- Manual rotation: you choose another proxy endpoint, close the current driver, and initialize a new driver with the new endpoint. Selenium’s documented session lifecycle supports creating a driver and ending it with
quit()(Driver Sessions).
The Selenium documentation does not promise automatic rotation for each page navigation, and changing an option on an already-running driver is not a portable way to replace its active proxy. Treat rotation cadence, sticky sessions, geography and authentication as provider-specific settings.

Choose an endpoint and rotation model
Obtain an endpoint from a proxy service that explicitly supports your intended use. Record the host, port, protocol, credentials (if required), permitted country or region, and whether the service rotates automatically or requires a new session identifier. Do not put real credentials in source files or logs. No particular provider endpoint or credential workflow is established by Selenium’s documentation, so follow your provider’s current instructions.
Install compatible Selenium components
Install Selenium 4 in the Python environment that will run the script:

python -m pip install -U seleniumUse a browser and driver supported by your installed Selenium version. Start with an ordinary, direct browser session first; that separates driver problems from proxy problems.
Decide what traffic must use the proxy
A Selenium proxy applies to browser traffic. A proxy dictionary passed to Python Requests applies only to Requests calls. Requests also warns that environment proxy variables can override session settings; those variables do not configure Selenium’s browser traffic (Requests advanced usage).
Configure an HTTP/HTTPS proxy in Selenium Python
This is the portable Selenium configuration pattern. Replace the placeholder with the gateway supplied by your provider.

driver.quit()http_proxy covers HTTP requests and ssl_proxy covers HTTPS traffic. If your provider gives separate addresses, set each field to its corresponding host and port. Confirm whether the provider expects a scheme, a particular TLS mode or a special authentication method before changing the values.
Use SOCKS when the provider supplies it
The same object can carry a SOCKS endpoint. Set the SOCKS version and credentials only when your provider requires them:

driver.quit()The Python Proxy API documents these fields, including proxy_autoconfig_url and SOCKS credentials. Use the mode that matches the endpoint; an HTTP gateway is not interchangeable with a SOCKS gateway.

Manual rotation between browser sessions
When you control a list of endpoints, rotate by creating a fresh session for each endpoint. This avoids claiming that a running browser can be reconfigured portably.

driver.quit()Each loop iteration starts a browser with the selected endpoint and calls quit() before the next one. Browser startup is more expensive than navigating another page in the same session, and cookies, local storage and other session state do not carry over unless you deliberately persist and restore them. If the target workflow requires a stable login session, ask the provider whether a sticky session or session identifier is available instead of restarting for every page.
Provider gateway rotation versus an endpoint pool

Evaluate the documented rotation rule, session persistence, browser compatibility, authentication flow, operational overhead and whether the automation complies with the destination site’s terms and applicable law. Selenium itself supplies the configuration interface, not an anonymity or compliance guarantee.
Chrome’s command-line alternative
For an unauthenticated Chromium endpoint, a browser-specific option is:

driver.quit()This is a Chromium command-line approach, not the portable Selenium Proxy API. Check current Chromium and provider documentation before relying on it, especially for HTTPS, SOCKS or authenticated proxies.

Authentication, secrets and geography
Credentials
The Selenium sources do not define a universal username-and-password format for every browser and proxy. A provider may use gateway credentials, IP allow-listing, a session token or a browser extension. Follow that provider’s documented method, keep secrets in environment variables or a secret manager, and redact proxy URLs in debug output.
Location and sticky sessions
A proxy endpoint’s apparent location and rotation behavior come from the proxy service. Verify country targeting, data-center or residential classification, session duration and failure handling with that service. Do not infer a rotation interval from Selenium’s API.
Verify that the proxy is actually being used
- Run the script against a harmless page that displays the observed client address, using a service approved for your testing.
- Compare the result with a direct browser session from the same machine.
- For manual rotation, record the endpoint label and observed address for each newly created driver.
- Check the browser’s own error page and your provider dashboard when a request fails; a successful WebDriver startup does not prove that the proxy can reach every destination.
A page that loads twice with the same observed address may simply reflect a sticky provider session. It does not prove Selenium ignored your setting.

The browser starts, but pages do not load
Check host, port and protocol first. Test the gateway outside Selenium, confirm that the account is allowed to use your machine’s source address, and verify that HTTPS destinations are supported. Then try the documented Proxy fields rather than mixing a SOCKS endpoint into HTTP settings.
Authentication prompts or proxy authentication errors
Confirm the provider’s required authentication method. Selenium’s generic proxy object does not make every browser accept embedded credentials in a proxy URL. Use the provider’s browser-specific extension or allow-list procedure when that is what it documents, and remove credentials from logs.
The IP does not change between pages
Selenium does not promise per-navigation rotation. Ask whether the gateway is sticky, whether rotation is time-based, or whether a new provider session identifier is required. If you control multiple endpoints, quit the driver and create a new one with the next endpoint.
Changing options.proxy has no effect
Options are supplied when the driver session is created. Set the proxy before webdriver.Chrome(options=options). For a replacement, end the old session with quit() and initialize another driver.

Requests uses a proxy but Selenium does not
Requests’ proxies argument and environment variables affect Requests only. Configure Selenium’s browser options separately; do not expect a Requests session setting to alter browser traffic.
Only some resources fail
Check whether the provider blocks particular ports, domains, DNS methods or resource types. Compare a direct browser run, inspect the browser error, and consult the provider’s current restrictions. A proxy can be reachable while a destination still rejects its address or TLS negotiation.
Rotation makes logins disappear
New browser sessions have new cookies and storage. Keep related navigations in one session when continuity matters, or implement an explicit, secure state-transfer process that complies with the target site’s rules.

- Starting a WebDriver is slower and more resource-intensive than opening another page in an existing session; rotate only at the boundary your workflow needs.
- Build cleanup with
try/finallyso crashed tasks do not leave browser processes running. - Use bounded retries and backoff for transient proxy failures, but do not blindly retry authentication failures or site blocks.
- Measure the provider’s latency and success behavior in your own permitted workload. Selenium’s documentation publishes no proxy success rate, pool size, price or rotation frequency.
- Keep a structured record of endpoint label, timestamp, URL category and failure reason without recording credentials or sensitive page data.

Frequently asked questions
Can I rotate a proxy for every Selenium request?
Only if your proxy service provides that behavior or you implement a browser-specific mechanism. Selenium’s documented configuration does not include a universal per-request rotation switch.
Should I use HTTP or SOCKS?
Use the protocol your provider supplies and configure the matching Proxy fields. An HTTP gateway belongs in the HTTP/SSL fields; a SOCKS gateway belongs in socks_proxy with the documented version.
Does restarting the driver erase browser state?
Yes. A newly created driver has a new session, so cookies and local storage from the previous session are not automatically present.
Are proxy credentials safe to place in a URL?
Not by default. URLs can appear in logs, exceptions and monitoring data. Use the provider’s documented secure authentication method and redact secrets.
Can a proxy make automation compliant?
No. Confirm that the target site permits your automation and that your collection, data handling and geographic targeting comply with applicable law and provider terms.
