To change the timezone that a page sees in a Playwright browser running in Docker, set timezoneId on the browser context—or set Playwright Test’s use.timezoneId option. Set the container’s TZ environment variable separately if the Node.js test-runner process also needs that timezone. These settings control different things.
Choose the setting for the process you need to change
A Dockerized Playwright test can involve two relevant timezones: the timezone emulated by the browser context for pages, and the timezone used by the test-runner process. Playwright’s documentation distinguishes them: browser timezone emulation does not change the runner’s timezone; the runner can use the TZ environment variable.
| What needs the timezone | Setting | Where to configure it |
|---|---|---|
| Page and browser-context behavior | timezoneId |
Playwright Test’s use configuration, a scoped test.use() call, or browser.newContext() |
| Test-runner process | TZ |
Docker container environment |
| Both browser and runner | Both settings | Configure timezoneId and TZ independently |
For example, if a page’s date or time behavior must be tested as though the visitor were in Paris, set the browser context’s timezoneId to Europe/Paris. If code running in the test process must also use Paris time, set TZ=Europe/Paris in the container as well.

- 【USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C: 10Gbps & Versatile Connectivity】The USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C port on the KAMRUI P2 small pc supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and can also output DisplayPort 1.4 video. Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
use: {
timezoneId: 'Europe/Paris',
},
});
Save this in the project’s Playwright configuration file, commonly playwright.config.ts. The important option is timezoneId; it configures browser contexts created for tests. It does not set the timezone of the process executing the tests.
Set the timezone for one test or group
To avoid changing the browser timezone for the whole project, scope the setting to a test or group with test.use(). The Playwright emulation guide demonstrates this form:
import { test } from '@playwright/test';
test.use({ timezoneId: 'Europe/Berlin' });
test('renders dates for Berlin', async ({ page }) => {
// Assertions for the page's browser-timezone behavior go here.
});
Place the scoped setting where it applies to the test or group in your test file. Use a project-wide configuration when the same browser timezone belongs to the whole suite; use a scoped setting when only selected tests need it.

Set the timezone on a directly created browser context
If you use the Playwright library API rather than Playwright Test’s fixtures, pass timezoneId when creating the context. The context is the relevant scope for browser emulation:
const context = await browser.newContext({
timezoneId: 'Europe/Berlin',
});
const page = await context.newPage();
Set the option when creating the context, before opening pages that need the emulated timezone. This changes the context, not the timezone of the Node.js process that called browser.newContext().
Set the test-runner timezone in Docker
Pass TZ into the container to configure the test-runner process timezone. For example, add this environment setting to a Docker invocation:

docker run -e TZ=Europe/Paris your-playwright-image
Replace your-playwright-image with the image you actually build or use. This example configures the process environment; it is not a substitute for timezoneId when the browser page itself needs timezone emulation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDocker Compose example
For a Compose service, supply the same environment variable under the service that runs the tests:
services:
tests:
image: your-playwright-image
environment:
TZ: Europe/Paris
The Compose snippet only sets the runner’s environment. Pair it with the Playwright configuration or context option above when both the runner and the browser need the same timezone.
Use both settings when the test needs both timezones
A common configuration is to set TZ in Docker and timezoneId in Playwright Test. For example:
// playwright.config.ts
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
use: {
timezoneId: 'Europe/Paris',
},
});
# Dockerfile excerpt
ENV TZ=Europe/Paris
With this arrangement, TZ is intended for the runner process and timezoneId for browser contexts. Keeping both settings explicit makes it easier to reason about tests that inspect both page behavior and values produced by code running in the test process. If the test only needs browser emulation, the Docker environment change is not required for that purpose.

Use a timezone ID supported by ICU, such as Europe/Paris or Europe/Berlin, rather than assuming an arbitrary label will work. Prefer a region-style ID that represents the location your test is modeling. Do not treat setting TZ as proof that the browser context is using that same timezone: configure and verify the browser context explicitly through Playwright.
Docker image and Playwright version requirements
The Playwright Docker guide explains that its images include browsers and system dependencies, but do not include the Playwright package for your project. Install the project dependency separately. It also warns that the Playwright version in the image and the version used by the project should match: a mismatch can prevent Playwright from locating browser executables.
Image tags and Playwright releases are version-dependent, so do not assume a particular image tag will remain an evergreen match. Keep the image and project dependency aligned with the Playwright version your tests use, and verify the setup in your own Docker environment.
Verify the browser and runner separately
When a test appears to use the wrong timezone, first identify which code is reporting it. Page-side behavior is governed by the browser context’s timezoneId; behavior in the test process is governed by its environment, including TZ. A test that checks only one side cannot establish that the other side is configured as intended.
- For a page assertion, confirm the test uses the context created with the expected
timezoneId. - For runner-side behavior, confirm the container was started with the intended
TZvalue. - If both matter, check each layer independently and keep both settings explicit.
Troubleshooting common timezone problems
The page still shows the host or container timezone
Likely cause: TZ was set in Docker, but the browser context was not given timezoneId. The runner environment variable is not the browser-emulation setting.
Fix: Add the intended timezoneId to Playwright Test’s use configuration, a scoped test.use() call, or the options passed to browser.newContext(), depending on how the test creates its context.

The test runner and page behave differently
Likely cause: Only one of the two timezone layers is configured. Playwright explicitly distinguishes browser timezone emulation from the runner timezone.
Fix: Set TZ for the runner in the Docker environment and set timezoneId for browser contexts if both processes must use the intended timezone.
Playwright cannot find browser executables
Likely cause: The Playwright version in the Docker image does not match the project’s Playwright version, or the project dependency has not been installed. The Docker guide identifies version mismatch as a cause of browser executable lookup problems and notes that the package is installed separately from the image.
Fix: Install the Playwright dependency in the project and align its version with the image release. Avoid assuming that the browser binaries in an image automatically provide the project’s Playwright package.
A timezone ID is rejected or does not represent the intended location
Likely cause: The value is not a supported ICU timezone ID, or it is not the region you mean to emulate.
Fix: Use a supported region-style ID such as Europe/Paris or Europe/Berlin, and verify the resulting behavior in the project’s own test environment.

If your goal is to capture a page rather than test browser timezone behavior, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL in one GET request and can return an image or PDF. This does not replace Playwright timezone testing; it is an alternative when you need a page capture without setting up a browser container.
One-call cURL example, using https://stripe.com as the target:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. Cookie banners are accepted before capture, and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting the Docker container’s timezone automatically set the Playwright browser timezone?
No. The container’s TZ environment variable configures the test-runner process; browser pages need the context’s timezoneId option.
Can I use timezoneId without changing the Docker environment?
Yes, when the browser context is the only layer that needs timezone emulation. Set TZ only if the test-runner process also needs a timezone.
