The correct way to set Outlook’s default composing font depends on which Outlook app you use. New Outlook and Classic Outlook for Windows, Outlook on the web, Outlook.com, and Outlook for Mac each have different menus; Outlook for Android and iOS currently have no documented default-font setting.
These preferences normally affect the body of messages you compose. They do not automatically change your inbox, reading pane, message list, signatures, or the formatting embedded in incoming emails.
Find your Outlook version

Microsoft maintains separate instructions for these interfaces because a path that works in Classic Outlook will not work in New Outlook. See the current Microsoft Outlook font instructions.
New Outlook for Windows
- Open Outlook and select View.
- Select View settings.
- Choose Mail, then Compose and reply.
- Under Message format, select the font family, size, style and, where offered, color.
- Select Save.
- Open a completely new message to confirm the result.
New Outlook usually has the modern interface and a View settings control. If you see a File tab that opens Options, use the Classic Outlook procedure instead.

Classic Outlook for Windows
- Select File → Options → Mail.
- Under Compose messages, select Stationery and Fonts.
- On Personal Stationery, under New mail messages, select Font.
- Choose the family, style, size and color, then select OK.
- To apply a font to replies and forwards, repeat the selection under Replying or forwarding messages.
- Select OK until all dialog boxes close, then create a new message to test it.
Restore the classic defaults
Microsoft lists these values for restoring Classic Outlook’s initial stationery settings: font +Body, style Regular, size 11, and color Automatic. They are restoration values for Classic Outlook, not a guarantee that every Outlook product or theme displays the same default.
Outlook on the web and Outlook.com
- Sign in to Outlook in your browser and select Settings.
- Select Mail → Compose and reply.
- Under message format, set Compose messages in to HTML.
- Choose the desired font and size (and any available style or color controls).
- Select Save, then open a new message to verify it.
The font controls are available only for HTML composition. Plain-text email has no font-family, size or color metadata, so switch to HTML if the selector is missing. Microsoft documents related format settings at Outlook mail settings.

Older Exchange Outlook Web App
Organizations using an older Exchange Server 2016 or 2019 Outlook Web App may instead use Settings → Options → Settings, then Message format and Message font. This is not the normal Outlook.com or Microsoft 365 web path.

- In the macOS menu bar, select Outlook → Settings.
- Open Composing.
- Choose New mail or Reply or forward.
- Select Select… (or the corresponding Font control), choose the family and size, and select OK.
- Repeat for each composition type that should use the same font.
Some current Mac builds expose the same controls under Outlook → Settings → Fonts. Under Default fonts, choose Font beside the relevant composition style and confirm with OK. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024 and Outlook 2021 for Mac: change font sizes in Outlook for Mac.

Do not confuse composition fonts with Reading → Preview font for message; preview and display settings change how messages appear to you, not necessarily the font encoded in outgoing mail. Incoming HTML can retain its own formatting.
Outlook for Android and iOS
Microsoft currently states that changing fonts while composing or replying is unavailable in Outlook for Android and Outlook for iOS. The mobile composer may offer limited per-message formatting, but there is no verified default-font procedure. If the font did not change
- Check the product: New Outlook, Classic Outlook, web, Mac and mobile use different settings.
- Configure replies separately: Classic Outlook and Mac distinguish new mail from replies and forwards.
- Use HTML on the web: Plain text cannot retain font formatting.
- Test a new message: Changing the toolbar font in one draft affects that message only.
- Check what you are viewing: Inbox text, the reading pane and message-list text use separate display or zoom controls. In New Outlook, reading-pane zoom is under View → Zoom.
- Check the signature: Signatures have independent formatting and insertion settings. Configure yours separately using Microsoft’s Outlook signature instructions.
- Allow for substitution: A recipient’s mail program may replace a font that is not installed on that device.
Choosing a dependable email font
Use a readable typeface, comfortable size and strong contrast. Decorative or unusual fonts may be substituted on recipients’ devices, so common fonts are safer for business and important messages. Send a test to another mail client when consistent appearance matters. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance is available at Improve email accessibility.
