For most families, the strongest setup on a compatible Amazon Fire tablet is an Amazon Kids child profile protected by a parental-controls PIN. The child profile lets you choose what the child can use and, where supported, set screen-time rules, manage web access and control in-app purchases. A PIN by itself is useful for restricting parts of the adult profile, but it does not create the same separate, curated experience.
“Kindle Fire” is the old name for Amazon’s color-screen tablets; Amazon now calls them Fire tablets. If your device is an e-ink Kindle reader, these instructions do not apply. Menu names and available features vary by tablet model, Fire OS version and marketplace.
First, identify and prepare the tablet
Fire tablets run Fire OS and support apps, games, video and the Silk browser. Kindle e-readers are primarily e-ink reading devices and use different controls. To check which Fire tablet you have, open Settings → Device Options → Device Model or About Fire Tablet; the wording varies. Amazon’s device specifications list model and generation information.

Before setup, make sure you are in the adult profile and have access to the Amazon account registered on the tablet. Have the child’s name and birth date ready, connect to the internet, and install any available system update from Settings → Device Options → System Updates or the equivalent screen. Prepare a secure parental-controls PIN and decide which apps, books, videos and websites are appropriate.

Amazon Kids is available at no additional cost on compatible Fire tablets, but Amazon says features vary by device and are offered only in select marketplaces. Amazon’s Kids help page describes supported controls. Amazon Kids+ is an optional subscription for additional children’s content, not a requirement for basic child profiles or parental controls; check the Amazon Kids+ page for current availability and terms.
Choose between a child profile and basic parental controls
Use Amazon Kids when a child needs a separate, simplified space with only selected content. Depending on the device and marketplace, it can provide age-based content filtering, screen-time limits, educational goals, web controls and in-app-purchase management. You can create separate profiles for children and manage them through the tablet or the Parent Dashboard.
Basic parental controls are useful if you need to restrict adult-profile functions without setting up a separate child experience—for example, on a shared tablet used temporarily under supervision. They can restrict access to functions such as apps, the web, purchases or Amazon stores, depending on Fire OS version. But the child remains in the adult profile, so this is not a substitute for selecting a child’s content and testing the paths they can access.

Turn on a parental-controls PIN
- From the adult profile, open Settings. If you do not see the option, use Settings search for Parental Controls.
- Turn parental controls on and follow the prompts to create and confirm a PIN.
- Choose a PIN that is not the tablet unlock code, the child’s birthday or another number the child can guess. Store it securely and avoid entering it where the child can watch.
Labels and the controls protected by the PIN differ across Fire OS versions. Treat the PIN as the gatekeeper: someone who knows it may be able to leave the child experience or change restrictions.
Create a child profile with Amazon Kids
- Return to the adult profile and open Settings.
- Open Profiles & Family Library, Profiles or the family-management option shown on your tablet. Alternatively, open the Amazon Kids app and follow its setup prompts.
- Choose Add a Child Profile or the equivalent option, then enter the child’s name and birth date.
- Choose the age or age-appropriate content settings offered on the device, then select which supported content to share.
- Save the profile, open Amazon Kids and select the child profile to enter the child experience.
Amazon’s Fire tablet documentation describes adding a child profile through Amazon Kids; expect onscreen labels to vary. Older tablets may use legacy names such as FreeTime or FreeTime Unlimited, and some older models may not offer current features. Amazon’s Fire tablet FAQ discusses legacy terminology and device limitations.
Select the content the child can use
In the child profile’s settings, look for Add Content, Share Content or a similar control. Choose the supported books, apps, games and videos the child may use. To remove something, return to that profile’s content settings and deselect it. The child profile is intended to show available content rather than expose the entire adult library with blocked items marked; Amazon describes this child experience in its Fire tablet FAQ.

Age filters are a starting point, not a guarantee that every item is suitable for your child. Review the actual shared titles and apps, especially third-party apps. Sideloaded apps and other ways of reaching content may not behave like items selected through Amazon Kids.
Set screen-time limits, bedtime and goals
Open the child’s settings in Amazon Kids and look for screen-time controls. Where your device offers them, set a total daily allowance, category-specific limits for reading, videos or apps, and a bedtime or no-use period. You can also configure educational goals or require reading before entertainment where supported. Amazon lists these controls, but the available options vary by device.
After saving, switch into the child profile and test a short limit rather than assuming the setting applies as intended. If a limit appears not to work, confirm you changed the correct child’s settings, check the tablet’s time and time zone, reconnect it to the internet, restart it and see whether the limit applies to a category rather than total device use.

It’s great for downloading games, videos, books, and music for their on-the-go educational entertainment.
Restrict web browsing
For a younger child, turn web browsing off in that child’s settings if the option is available. If browsing is appropriate, restrict access to preapproved websites and decide whether web videos should be allowed. Fire tablets use Amazon Silk as their browser; Amazon documents it in its Silk overview. Amazon Kids settings can modify browser access, including approved sites and web videos, subject to device and marketplace support.
Test Silk from the child profile after changing the setting. Also check whether another browser or app can provide internet access and whether the child can switch to the adult profile. Amazon Kids controls are not a complete internet filter; they do not replace supervision or, where appropriate, network-level filtering.

Control purchases and in-app spending
Consider three separate routes: purchases from the Amazon Appstore, purchases of Amazon books or videos, and purchases made inside a game. Do not assume that one purchase restriction automatically covers all three. Keep the child in the child profile, disable in-app purchases unless you have a reason to allow them, and use approval rather than direct purchasing when that option is supported.

Amazon’s pending in-app-purchase approval flow is limited to supported marketplaces—its developer documentation names amazon.com, amazon.ca, amazon.co.uk and amazon.de—and subscriptions do not use the same pending-purchase state. See Amazon’s pending-purchase implementation notes. A child may request an eligible purchase for a parent to approve or decline through the Parent Dashboard, but other purchase flows may behave differently. Test the relevant game or app and check its purchase screen before relying on approval as a block.
Manage settings with the Parent Dashboard
Sign in to the Amazon Parent Dashboard with the adult Amazon account and select the child profile. Where supported, the Dashboard lets parents adjust child settings, manage content and time controls, review activity and handle eligible purchase requests. The activity detail and available controls vary by feature, device and region; do not treat the Dashboard as a record of everything a child does.
Test the child profile before handing over the tablet
Switch into the child profile and check the restrictions from the child’s point of view. Test the specific routes that matter to your family rather than relying only on the settings screen.
- Confirm that only the intended apps, books and videos are available.
- Try opening a site in Silk and check whether web video or other browser access is permitted.
- Check whether a game offers direct in-app purchases or an approval request.
- Observe whether the selected screen-time limit and bedtime take effect.
- Confirm that leaving the child profile requires the PIN and that the child cannot reach an unrestricted adult profile.
If a restriction fails, verify that it was set for the correct child profile, that the tablet is online and that the child is not using the adult profile or another app that provides the same access. Restart and retest after settings have had a chance to sync.
Exit Amazon Kids or recover access
Exit the child experience
- Open the child-profile menu.
- Choose Exit Amazon Kids or the adult-profile option shown on the device.
- Enter the parental-controls PIN to return to the adult profile.
If you forget the PIN
There is no verified universal bypass that applies to every Fire tablet. Confirm the tablet is registered to the correct adult Amazon account, then use Amazon account recovery or the device-specific Fire Tablet Help and support route. Depending on model and Fire OS version, recovery may require account verification, customer support or a reset. A factory reset can erase local data; after registering the tablet again, purchased or downloaded content may need to be restored or downloaded again.
Quick Recap

When Amazon Kids or a control is missing
- Amazon Kids is not listed: Check that you are in the adult profile, confirm the device model and update status, and search Settings for “Kids,” “Profiles” or “Parental Controls.” Feature availability depends on model and marketplace; consult Amazon’s device-specific support rather than assuming the feature has merely been renamed.
- The child can still browse: Recheck the settings for that specific child, disable browsing or limit sites, test Silk in the child profile, and look for another browser or internet-enabled app.
- The child can still buy: Check whether the child is in the adult profile, whether in-app purchases remain enabled, and whether the game’s purchase flow is eligible for Amazon’s approval system. Review account purchase settings and Dashboard requests.
- Screen limits do not apply: Verify the profile, device clock and time zone, internet connection, and whether the setting is category-specific. Restart and run a short observed test.
- The PIN is known to the child: Change it, avoid reusing the unlock code, and check the profile settings for changes made while the PIN was known.
