Set Shopify’s default Open Graph image in Online Store > Preferences. Under Social sharing image and SEO, choose Add image or Change image, select the file, and save. This image is a fallback: Shopify’s free themes normally use a product, collection, or blog post’s featured image when one exists, while pages such as the homepage or About page use the store-level social sharing image.

If a custom theme still shows a different image, inspect its theme settings and Liquid metadata. Theme code can override theme settings, and theme settings can override the image saved in Preferences.

Set the store-wide social sharing image

The built-in setting is the safest starting point because it requires no code and gives Shopify a default image for pages that do not provide another one.

  1. Sign in to Shopify admin.
  2. Open Online Store > Preferences.
  3. Locate Social sharing image and SEO.
  4. Select Add image if none is configured, or Change image to replace the current file.
  5. Choose the image from your device or Shopify’s file picker.
  6. Save the preference.

Shopify Help Center describes this image as the default used when a page’s featured image is unavailable. Saving it does not necessarily replace an image deliberately emitted by a product template, collection template, blog template, theme setting, or hard-coded metadata.

Understand which image Shopify uses

The image you see on a social network is determined by the page’s rendered metadata and by the theme’s image-selection logic. Shopify’s documented precedence order is:

Priority Source What it means
1 (highest) Image hard-coded in theme files Liquid or another theme file can force a specific image, bypassing both admin settings.
2 Image uploaded in theme settings Some themes expose a social-media, social-sharing, checkout-logo, or similar image field and use that value in their metadata.
3 (fallback) Online Store > Preferences social sharing image This is used when no higher-priority image is available.

For Shopify’s free themes, the featured image normally controls previews for product pages, collection pages, and blog posts. A page without a featured image—such as the homepage or an About page—falls back to the store social sharing image. Third-party themes can change this behavior.

What this means in practice

  • Changing the Preferences image usually affects pages that have no more specific image.
  • Changing a product’s featured image can change that product’s shared image without touching the global fallback.
  • A collection or article can continue using its own featured image after you change the store-level setting.
  • A custom theme may output more than one og:image tag or ignore the Preferences value entirely; inspect the rendered page before editing anything.

Check theme settings before editing Liquid

If the Preferences field is blank, or the saved image never appears in a preview, open the theme editor and inspect the active theme’s settings. Shopify specifically points merchants to locations such as Theme settings > Checkout > Logo and Theme settings > Social media or Social sharing. A theme may only display an image uploaded in one of those settings.

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes and open Customize for the published theme.
  2. Open the theme’s global Theme settings.
  3. Look for Social media, Social sharing, or a comparable image control.
  4. Check Checkout > Logo if the theme documentation or its setting labels point there.
  5. Save any intended change, then inspect a page’s generated metadata.

Do not assume that a field with “social” in its label is the same value used for og:image. The rendered HTML is the authority for what a crawler will receive.

Use a custom theme’s Liquid metadata when necessary

Code changes are appropriate when you need a rule that the theme editor does not provide, or when the active theme does not use the admin image. Duplicate the theme before editing so you can test without changing the published version.

Find the existing Open Graph tag

  1. In Shopify admin, open Online Store > Themes.
  2. From the theme’s action menu, choose Edit code.
  3. Search all files for og:image. Social metadata is commonly stored in a snippet included by the layout, but the exact filename varies.
  4. Read the surrounding Liquid before changing it. Product, collection, and article templates may intentionally set page-specific images.

Use the global page_image object carefully

Shopify’s Liquid documentation demonstrates using the global page_image object as the value of the Open Graph image. That object points to the image configured through Shopify’s admin settings. The illustrative pattern is:

<meta property="og:image" content="http:{{ page_image | img_url: '1200x1200' }}">

The example comes from Shopify’s article and should be treated as a pattern, not guaranteed copy-and-paste code for every current theme. Check the filters, URL scheme, escaping, and image object conventions already used by your theme. Many modern themes use different image filters or already implement page-specific logic.

Preserve page-specific behavior

Before replacing a theme-specific setting with page_image, determine whether the current code intentionally selects a product, collection, article, or section image. A broad replacement can make every URL share the same fallback and remove useful page-level previews. Modify only the branch that is producing the wrong result, and keep one clear source for each page’s og:image whenever possible.

Shopify’s current theme requirements include Open Graph and Twitter card tags. A custom implementation should therefore be checked in the rendered document, not judged solely by whether the Liquid file saves without an error.

Verify the image that crawlers receive

Use the browser’s view-source or developer tools to inspect the final HTML for <meta property="og:image">. Confirm that the URL is the image you intended and that it appears in the page delivered to an unauthenticated visitor.

  1. Open the exact product, collection, article, homepage, or page URL you intend to share.
  2. View the page source and search for og:image.
  3. Check whether the tag is present once or whether multiple tags are being emitted.
  4. Open the image URL directly in a private browser window to confirm it is reachable.
  5. Test the URL with the relevant social preview tool: Shopify references Twitter’s Card Validator, Facebook’s Crawler/Sharing Debugger, and LinkedIn’s Post Inspector.

Facebook may retain an image for several days before checking again. Its Sharing Debugger can request a fresh scrape and show warnings. That social-card cache is separate from a search engine’s cached result; if a search result remains outdated, Shopify advises resubmitting the sitemap rather than treating a social debugger refresh as a search-index update.

Troubleshoot a wrong, blank, or stale image

The product image appears instead of the Preferences image

This is normally expected in a free Shopify theme when the product has a featured image. The store-level image is a fallback, not a universal override. Remove or change the page’s featured image only if that is really the intended sharing behavior, or adjust the theme’s metadata logic.

A collection or blog post still uses its old image

Check that resource’s featured image and inspect its rendered og:image tag. If the tag contains the old URL, the theme is selecting a page-specific value. If the tag contains the new URL but a social network shows the old preview, refresh that platform’s cache with its debugger.

The Preferences image field is empty or has no visible effect

Inspect Theme settings > Social media, Social sharing, and Checkout > Logo. Shopify notes that some themes only display images uploaded through theme settings. Then search the theme code for og:image to identify a hard-coded value or custom setting with higher priority.

There are multiple og:image tags

Multiple tags can produce inconsistent previews because crawlers may choose different entries. Find every occurrence in the layout and included snippets, identify which one is intended, and remove or conditionally disable duplicates. Keep page-specific branches only where they are deliberate.

The HTML has the new URL but the preview is unchanged

The social platform is likely serving cached metadata. Use the platform’s inspector or debugger to request a new crawl, then wait for that platform to update its card. Do not change Liquid repeatedly while the rendered HTML already contains the correct image.

The custom Liquid edit causes a theme error

Restore the duplicated theme, compare the edited line with the active theme’s existing filters, and validate the syntax in a preview theme before publishing. The page_image example in Shopify’s documentation is illustrative; filter names and object handling differ between theme generations.

Choose the right implementation path

Path Best for Control Main trade-off
Online Store Preferences Merchants who need a store-wide fallback without code Sets the default image Does not override page images, theme settings, or hard-coded metadata.
Theme settings Themes that expose a social-sharing control Uses the theme’s supported image field Labels and behavior vary by theme.
Custom Liquid Developers who need explicit metadata rules Highest control, including conditional logic Requires code review, preview testing, and maintenance when the theme changes.
Preview app Merchants seeking automated or more customized social previews App-specific controls for images and Open Graph metadata Adds another app layer and its own configuration.

Consider a preview app only after the built-in route

Shopify App Store listing PreviewBuilder: Link Image describes a way to customize preview images and Open Graph metadata for Shopify stores. It is an optional route for merchants who need automation or more customization than their theme provides. Review the app’s current capabilities, permissions, and terms in Shopify before installing it; the listing alone does not establish any referral or partner arrangement.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a replacement for Shopify’s og:image metadata. It can nevertheless help you verify how a storefront renders after you change the image, without maintaining a headless-browser script. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API accepts a URL and can capture the exact page you want to inspect.

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the result through X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

There is a free allowance of 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is included on every plan. Use the screenshot to confirm the page a visitor sees, then use the social debugger to confirm the metadata a crawler reads.
