To control the image people see when they share a WordPress URL, set a Featured Image and make sure your site outputs Open Graph metadata. For exact art direction, set a page-specific social image in your SEO plugin. A site-wide default image covers pages that have no custom image.

What a “website preview image” is

When someone pastes a WordPress URL into Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, X, Pinterest, or another app, that service reads metadata in the page’s <head>. The image normally comes from the og:image tag, not from the browser’s visual rendering of your page.

A WordPress Featured Image is primarily an editorial and theme feature. WordPress explains that “Featured Images (also sometimes called Post Thumbnails) are used in different ways depending on the theme.” A theme may show it in archives, home-page sections, templates, or above the post. Setting one does not guarantee that social metadata points to it.

Open Graph metadata is the bridge between your page and sharing services. Yoast describes the result this way: “If you add Open Graph meta tags to your posts and pages, Facebook will display a preview with images and an excerpt when someone shares a link to your site.”

Set the image in the WordPress editor

  1. Edit the target content. Open the post or page whose shared image you want to change.
  2. Open settings. Click the gear icon to show the Page/Post Settings sidebar.
  3. Choose Featured image. Click Set featured image.
  4. Select the artwork. Upload a file or choose one from the Media Library, then set its alternative text and attachment details as appropriate.
  5. Save the change. Click Update or Publish, depending on the page status.

In a block theme, the Site Editor can place the Post Featured Image block in a post template. That lets the same selected image appear in your site design, while your SEO settings determine whether it is also used as social metadata.

Make Open Graph use the right image

If your site does not already have an SEO or social-sharing system, install and configure one rather than adding several overlapping plugins. The exact menu names vary by plugin; the following paths apply to Yoast SEO.

Enable Open Graph data

  1. Go to SEO → Settings → Social sharing.
  2. Ensure Open Graph data is enabled.
  3. Save the settings.

Set a different image for one page

Edit the page, open the plugin’s social-preview or social-media appearance controls, and upload a custom social image. Use this when the page’s Featured Image is suitable on your site but not for a share card, or when you need different text placement or composition.

Set a default for pages without an image

In the same social settings, upload a template or site-wide default social image. This is particularly important for a homepage, archives, landing pages, and older posts that have no Featured Image. Save the settings and clear any page cache afterward.

Enable X card data

Go to SEO → Settings → Site features → Social sharing and enable X card data. Yoast’s technical specification uses summary_large_image as the default X card type. X may use a custom X image, the Facebook/Open Graph image, a Featured Image, a prominent content image, a template default, or the site-wide default.

Which image WordPress and Yoast choose

For Yoast’s og:image output, the documented priority is:

  1. A custom per-page Facebook image.
  2. The page’s Featured Image (for posts).
  3. A prominent image in the content.
  4. A WooCommerce product-gallery image when applicable.
  5. A template “Social default image.”
  6. The site’s fallback or default social image.

That priority is why a page-specific social image is the most reliable choice when exact art direction matters. Open Graph is also consumed by Pinterest, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and Google, although each service can crop, cache, or display the data differently.

Choose and prepare the artwork

  • Use a clear landscape composition that remains understandable when cropped.
  • Keep logos, faces, and essential text away from the edges so platform crops do not remove them.
  • Use a sufficiently large source image; a tiny file may be enlarged and look soft.
  • Do not upload an unnecessarily huge file, because it can slow your page and media processing.
  • Choose a common web image format and sensible compression.

WordPress documentation does not establish one universal social-preview pixel size. Check the rendered result in your SEO plugin and, when available, the destination platform’s preview tool instead of treating one dimension as a guarantee.

Inspect what your page actually publishes

  1. Open the public URL in a browser.
  2. View the page source (not only the visual inspector).
  3. Search for og:image, og:title, and, where relevant, twitter:image.
  4. Confirm that the image URL is the file you intended and that the title and description match the page.

The image URL should be publicly reachable over HTTPS and return an image, not a login screen, redirect loop, hotlink block, or permission error.

Why the wrong image appears

The logo appears instead of the Featured Image

The page may lack Open Graph tags, the SEO plugin may be using its default image, or the Featured Image may not be eligible for that content type. Set a page-specific image in the plugin’s social tab and inspect the source again.

Two images or conflicting titles are present

Two SEO/social plugins may both be emitting metadata. Duplicate tags let a network choose unpredictably. Keep Open Graph output enabled in one system and disable the duplicate output in the other.

The old image remains after you changed it

Clear your WordPress page cache, hosting cache, and CDN cache. Then use the destination network’s URL inspection or share-debugging tool, when available, to request a fresh scrape. Social networks cache previews independently of WordPress.

The image is missing entirely

Check that the URL is public, uses HTTPS, returns the correct image content type, and is not blocked by authentication, robots controls, firewall rules, or hotlink protection. A successful browser view while logged in does not prove that a crawler can fetch it.

A post-specific image is ignored

Set the image in the plugin’s social controls rather than relying only on the on-page Featured Image. This gives the metadata generator an explicit override.

Native WordPress, SEO plugin, or dedicated Open Graph plugin?

Approach og:image Per-page override Site/template fallback X metadata Preview controls
Featured Image only Not guaranteed; theme-dependent Through the editor only Theme-dependent Not guaranteed Usually not
Yoast SEO Yes, when enabled Yes Yes Yes Social preview controls
Dedicated Open Graph plugin Depends on the plugin Check its settings Check its settings Check its settings Check its settings

Before adding a plugin, identify whether your theme or another SEO plugin already emits these tags. One authoritative metadata source is safer than several.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo

If the image you need is a faithful capture of a live page, ScreenshotNeo can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in headers.

Use the resulting image as your Featured Image or custom social image. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all parameters.

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Final verification checklist

  • Featured Image is set and the page is updated.
  • Exactly one system emits Open Graph tags.
  • og:image points to the intended HTTPS file.
  • X card data is enabled if X sharing matters.
  • A default social image exists for pages without custom art.
  • Caches are cleared and the platform has re-scraped the URL.
