You can upload an image file or choose one of YouTube’s generated suggestions, then select Save. Custom thumbnails require a verified account. For Shorts, YouTube currently allows custom thumbnail uploads only in YouTube Studio on a computer.
Set a thumbnail for a regular YouTube video on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Choose Content from the left-hand menu.
- Open the video whose thumbnail you want to set or change.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose one of these options:
- Upload file to select an image stored on your computer.
- Get suggestions to choose one of YouTube’s generated thumbnail options.
- Select Save.
YouTube Help states: “Your account must be verified to use this feature.” If the custom-thumbnail controls are missing, verify the channel before trying again. A saved change can take time to appear across YouTube, so do not assume the upload failed immediately after saving.
Can you choose any frame from the video?
Not through the custom-upload control. YouTube distinguishes between uploading your own image and choosing from its generated suggestions. If you want a particular frame, capture or design that image yourself and upload the resulting JPG or PNG. The Get suggestions option is the route for YouTube-selected video images.
Set a thumbnail for a Short
YouTube’s current help instructions say custom thumbnails for Shorts can be added only in YouTube Studio on a computer.

- Simple, accessible and beginner-friendly app

- Different brands to make thumbnail more attractive
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer and sign in.
- Choose Content, then select the Shorts filter or tab.
- Open the Short you want to edit.
- Under Thumbnail, upload your image.

YouTube recommends a vertical 9:16 image for a Short. A correctly shaped file reduces the chance that important text or a subject will be cropped in the Shorts interface.

Thumbnail image requirements and display behavior
YouTube’s figures below are recommendations and device-specific limits, not a single universal rule for every upload path.
| Content or workflow | Recommended dimensions and shape | Stated file limit | Format or display note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular video | 3840 × 2160 pixels; 16:9 recommended; minimum width 640 pixels | Up to 50 MB on desktop; up to 2 MB for mobile video thumbnails | JPG or PNG |
| Short | 2160 × 3840 pixels; 9:16 recommended; minimum height 640 pixels | Up to 50 MB on desktop; a separate mobile Shorts limit is not stated | Use a vertical composition so titles and faces remain inside the visible area |
Why a vertical video may show a different thumbnail on mobile
For vertical videos using a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube says an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail may appear on Home, Explore, and Subscriptions on mobile. The custom thumbnail can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. Design the central part of the image to survive that alternate crop.
Eligibility, policy, and upload limits
Verification
Custom thumbnails require account verification. YouTube’s wording is direct: “Your account must be verified to use this feature.” Generated suggestions do not replace the verification requirement when you want to upload your own file.
Rank #2
Community Guidelines
The image must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples that can lead to rejection or enforcement. A thumbnail that violates those rules can create a policy problem even when the underlying video is allowed.
Daily upload limits
YouTube applies a daily limit to custom-thumbnail uploads. The limit can vary by country or region and by channel history. Copyright strikes may affect channel-history eligibility, while Community Guidelines strikes can affect how many custom thumbnails you may upload. If YouTube displays a daily-limit error, its advice is to try again after 24 hours.
Search-result enforcement
YouTube may turn off custom thumbnails for certain search results when it considers them inappropriate for viewers. That behavior is separate from whether the image saved successfully in Studio.
Troubleshooting a thumbnail that will not change
The Thumbnail section or Upload file button is missing
- Confirm that you are signed in to the channel that owns the video.
- Verify the account; custom thumbnails are not available on an unverified account.
- Reload YouTube Studio and reopen the video from Content.
- For a Short, move to YouTube Studio on a computer rather than relying on a mobile workflow.
The file is rejected
- Check that the file is a JPG or PNG.
- Reduce the file size if it exceeds the limit for the device and upload route you are using.
- Use the recommended 16:9 layout for regular videos or 9:16 for Shorts, with at least the stated minimum dimension.
- Remove prohibited sexual, hateful, violent, or dangerous imagery and retry.
The old image still appears after saving
YouTube says a thumbnail change may take time to appear. Wait, then refresh Studio and check the video on another YouTube surface. A delay does not by itself indicate that the upload failed.
You see a daily-limit message
Stop repeated attempts and try again in 24 hours, as YouTube recommends. Review whether recent copyright or Community Guidelines strikes, your channel history, or your region could be affecting the limit.

The thumbnail is cropped unexpectedly
Check the content type and viewing surface. A 16:9 image on a vertical video can be rendered as an automatic 4:5 image on mobile Home, Explore, and Subscriptions. Keep essential text and faces near the center and preview the image at a small size before uploading.
Use Test & compare when you need an experiment
Test & compare thumbnails is optional; it is not required to replace a thumbnail. YouTube says the feature can compare up to three options on a computer in YouTube Studio. Access requires advanced features and an eligible public long-form video or podcast episode. Private and made-for-kids videos are excluded, among other restrictions. If the control is absent, the video or channel may not meet those eligibility conditions.

A practical pre-upload checklist
- Verify the channel before planning a custom upload.
- Choose 16:9 for a regular video or 9:16 for a Short.
- Keep the file in JPG or PNG format and within the limit for the device you are using.
- Keep important words and faces away from the edges, especially for vertical videos shown in alternate mobile crops.
- Check the image against YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
- Save in Studio, then allow time for the new image to propagate.

If what you need is a clean screenshot of a YouTube page—for example, a reference image of the watch page while preparing thumbnail artwork—ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one request. It is not a YouTube thumbnail editor; it captures the URL you provide.
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page and billing result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing a thumbnail change the video itself?
No. The thumbnail is the preview image associated with the video; changing it does not replace the uploaded video file.
Can I use the same thumbnail on several videos?
YouTube’s upload workflow lets you select an image file for each video. Reusing a file is possible, but make sure the image accurately represents every video and follows the Community Guidelines.
Where can I check whether a saved thumbnail is visible?
After allowing time for propagation, check the video in YouTube Studio and on the watch page. Remember that mobile Home, Explore, and Subscriptions can use a different crop for some vertical videos.
