To make a chosen WordPress Page your homepage, publish that Page, then open Settings > Reading. Under Your homepage displays, select A static page, choose the Page under Homepage, and save. You can also assign a separate Page to show your latest posts.

Create and publish the homepage Page

  1. In the dashboard, go to Pages > Add New.
  2. Add the content for your homepage. A title such as “Home” can make the Page easier to identify later.
  3. Publish the Page. It must exist before it can be selected as the front page. See WordPress.org’s guide to creating Pages.

Choose the homepage and, if wanted, a blog page

  1. Go to Settings > Reading.
  2. Under Your homepage displays, select A static page.
  3. Use the Homepage selector to choose the Page you published.
  4. If you want a separate page for your post listing, choose a different Page under Posts page. The homepage and Posts page cannot be the same Page.
  5. Save your changes.

The Posts page is an assignment, not a normal Page whose content is shown above the posts. Its assigned Page template is ignored for the listing; the theme’s home.php or index.php, where available, controls how posts are displayed. If you leave Posts page unset, posts may still be accessible through navigation such as category, calendar, or archive links. WordPress explains these options in its Settings Reading screen documentation.

Understand what “static” means

A static front page is a selected WordPress Page rather than the automatically updated list of latest posts. “Static” does not mean WordPress serves a hand-authored static HTML file: you can still edit the Page, and WordPress renders it through the active theme.

If the homepage still looks wrong

Check the theme’s homepage controls

Some themes provide Appearance > Customize > Homepage Settings. If that option is available, select the static page there and publish the change. The Customizer route depends on the active theme; it is not present in every theme. The WordPress static front page guide describes this theme-dependent option alongside the Reading settings.

Inspect the Front Page template in a block theme

With a block theme, open Appearance > Editor and inspect the templates. A Front Page template can determine how the front page is rendered regardless of the Reading selection. Edit that template to match the intended design, or remove it if you want the Reading selection to control the display. WordPress documents this behavior in its Site Editor guide and Template Editor guide. The Site Editor is available when a block theme is installed and activated.

Consider plugins that change post display

WordPress warns that static-front-page plugins and plugins that control or restrict post display can affect these settings. If the selection does not behave as expected, check whether a plugin is managing the homepage or post listings.
