Yes, you can set part of a song as an iPhone ringtone in iOS 18 without a computer. The supported method uses Apple’s GarageBand app: import an eligible audio file or downloaded, unprotected Music track, trim it to 30 seconds or less, export it as a ringtone, and assign it to calls, texts, or a specific contact.
Not every song will work. Apple Music subscription tracks protected by DRM cannot be converted, even if they play normally in the Music app.

What you need
- An iPhone running iOS 18.
- GarageBand for iPhone.
- A compatible audio file stored on your iPhone or in iCloud Drive through the Files app, or an eligible downloaded Music-library track.
- A song or recording that you own, created, or are licensed to use.
Apple’s current ringtone workflow limits the exported clip to 30 seconds. GarageBand can shorten a longer project automatically, but manually selecting the exact section gives better results.

There are four commonly confused sources:

Apple explains the protected-track limitation in its guide to creating a custom ringtone on iPhone. Do not use DRM-removal tools or unauthorized downloads.

How to make a song your ringtone with GarageBand
1. Start a new audio-recording project
If GarageBand is not installed, download it from the App Store. On the Home Screen, touch and hold the GarageBand icon, then tap Create New Audio Recording. You can also open GarageBand normally and create an audio-recording project.
2. Open Tracks view and the Loops Browser
- Tap the Tracks button.
- Tap the instrument icon on the left to select the track.
- Tap the Loops Browser button.
GarageBand’s controls are largely icon-based, and their position can vary slightly between app versions.
3. Import the song
Import from Files
- Tap Files in the Loops Browser.
- Tap Browse items from the Files app.
- Find the audio file on your iPhone or in iCloud Drive.
- Touch and hold the file.
- Drag it into the Tracks timeline, all the way to the left.
Import from the Music library
- Tap Music in the Loops Browser.
- Find the track.
- Confirm that it is downloaded to the iPhone.
- Touch and hold the track and drag it into Tracks view.
If the Music track is dimmed, it may not be downloaded or may be protected. Download it if it is cloud-only. If it remains unavailable, use a legitimately obtained, unprotected audio file instead.

- Tap the audio region in Tracks view.
- Drag the left and right edges to choose the section you want.
- Touch and hold an edge for more precise editing.
- Keep the final clip at 30 seconds or less.
- Drag the finished region completely to the left edge of the timeline.
Choose a recognizable section with a strong opening rather than a long fade-in or quiet introduction. Moving the region to the start prevents the ringtone from beginning with unintended silence.

5. Save the project to My Songs
- Tap the Navigation button.
- Tap My Songs.
The project must be saved in GarageBand’s My Songs browser before it can be exported as a ringtone.
6. Export it as a ringtone
- In My Songs, tap the More button.
- Tap Select, then select your project.
- Tap the Share button.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Enter a name for the ringtone.
- Tap Export.
If GarageBand reports that the project is longer than 30 seconds, return and trim it manually, or tap Continue to let GarageBand shorten it automatically.
7. Assign the new ringtone
After export, tap Use sound as and choose one of these options:
- Standard Ringtone: uses it for general incoming calls.
- Standard Text Tone: uses it for incoming text messages.
- Assign to contact: applies it to one selected contact.
- Done: saves it without assigning it immediately.
Choose the ringtone later from Settings
To select an exported or purchased ringtone later, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone, then tap the tone you want.

For a contact-specific tone, open the contact, tap Edit, choose the ringtone field, select the tone, and save the contact. Menu wording can vary slightly between iOS 18 updates.
Troubleshooting
The song is greyed out in Music
The track is probably not downloaded or is protected. Download it to the iPhone first. If it remains dimmed, it cannot be used through GarageBand; use a compatible, unprotected file that you legitimately own or are licensed to use.
The audio file will not import
Confirm that the file is accessible through the Files app and is compatible with GarageBand. If necessary, use a legitimately obtained copy in a commonly supported audio format. Do not assume that every file extension or encoding will import successfully.
GarageBand says the ringtone is too long
Trim the audio region to 30 seconds or less. Alternatively, choose Continue when GarageBand offers to shorten the ringtone automatically.

The ringtone starts with silence
Return to Tracks view and drag the trimmed audio region all the way to the far-left beginning of the timeline before exporting again.
Share → Ringtone is missing
Make sure you are sharing the saved GarageBand project—not the original file in Files—and that the project appears in My Songs. Select the project from the My Songs browser, then use More → Select → Share → Ringtone. Updating GarageBand may also help if its controls are not behaving normally.
I exported the tone but cannot find it
Exporting and assigning are separate steps. After export, choose Use sound as to apply it immediately. If you selected Done, find it later under Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.
The ringtone is difficult to recognize
Choose a louder, distinctive section with a clear opening. Avoid a clip that starts during a fade-in, and preview the selection before exporting.

Alternatives to GarageBand
Apple Tone Store
If you want convenience rather than a specific excerpt, Apple’s Tone Store lets you purchase ready-made ringtones and tones. Availability and prices depend on the item and storefront. Buying a music track does not automatically mean you have purchased its ringtone version.
A sound created in GarageBand
You can also use a recording or song created in GarageBand, provided it meets the same export requirements. For most users who want a particular song excerpt, however, importing a rights-cleared local file is the more predictable route.
Third-party ringtone apps are not necessary for this iOS 18 workflow. They may add advertising, subscriptions, privacy considerations, or another export step, so check their current App Store terms carefully before using one.
