WordPress does not automatically select one site-wide image when a post has no featured image. To create that behavior, enable post-thumbnail support, test has_post_thumbnail() in the template that renders the card or post header, and output your chosen asset when the test is false.
1. Make sure the theme supports featured images
Add post-thumbnail support in the active theme, usually in functions.php. WordPress requires this support to be registered before init; the after_setup_theme hook is the standard location.

} );If the theme already calls add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' ), do not add a second copy. Support can be limited to selected post types, and a custom post type must also declare thumbnail support if it is not inherited from the theme setup.
2. Find the template that actually displays the thumbnail
Put the fallback logic in the template responsible for the image you want to change—often a file used inside the Loop, such as a post-card, archive, or single-post template. Editing an unused template has no effect. Classic themes typically use PHP templates; block themes may render the image through a Query Loop or Post Featured Image block, so identify the active block pattern or template before adding PHP.

3. Add the fallback branch
Use has_post_thumbnail() as the condition. It checks whether the current post has an attached featured image.

Copy your fallback file to the active theme’s assets/images/default-thumbnail.jpg location, or change the path in get_theme_file_uri() to match your asset. The filename, directory, dimensions, and crop are theme decisions; there is no universal WordPress default path.

Choose the correct alternative text
- Use a meaningful description when the fallback communicates information that readers need.
- Use
alt=""when the image is purely decorative and the surrounding heading or text already identifies the post.
Keep the URL escaped with esc_url() when generating the element.
4. Choose how WordPress outputs the assigned image
the_post_thumbnail() prints the image HTML immediately. Pass a registered size that matches the layout:

<?php the_post_thumbnail( 'post-thumbnail' ); ?>The documented default is post-thumbnail when the theme has registered that special size. A theme can instead pass another registered size or an array of dimensions. The selected size controls the generated image and should fit the card or header’s aspect ratio.
Use get_the_post_thumbnail() when you need the generated markup as a string—for example, to add it to a larger conditional or filter—rather than printing it directly.

5. A complete reusable example
This version keeps the assigned-image and fallback branches in one wrapper so existing CSS can style both consistently.

6. Limit the behavior when necessary
Only certain post types
Place the conditional in the template used by the post type that needs a fallback, or add a post-type check around the fallback branch. This avoids changing pages or custom content that uses a different visual treatment.
Different images by category
Replace the single fallback URL with your own category or taxonomy decision, then escape the URL exactly as in the example. WordPress supplies the thumbnail check and output functions; selecting multiple assets is application-specific theme logic.

7. Troubleshoot a missing or unchanged fallback
- No image appears: verify that the file exists at the path returned by
get_theme_file_uri()and inspect the rendered HTML for the final URL. - The assigned image never appears: confirm the post type supports thumbnails and that the post actually has a featured image.
- Nothing changes after editing: check that the active theme or block layout uses the template you modified, then clear any page or object cache.
- The image is distorted: use a fallback with the layout’s aspect ratio or apply the same CSS sizing and object-fit rules as the assigned thumbnail.
- PHP errors occur: check the PHP syntax, placement inside the Loop, and whether the code was pasted into a file that is loaded by the active theme.
8. Verify the result
- Open a post with a featured image and confirm the normal thumbnail is rendered.
- Open a post without one and confirm the fallback URL is rendered instead.
- Check archive cards, search results, related-post components, and single-post headers separately; each may use a different template.
- Test keyboard and screen-reader output to ensure the alternative text matches whether the image is informative or decorative.
- Inspect mobile layouts and the generated image dimensions before publishing the change.
