To send SMS messages from WordPress, install an SMS plugin or WooCommerce extension, connect an SMS provider, add the provider credentials and sender number, configure the event and recipients, then send a test. Choose the workflow first: general WordPress notifications, WooCommerce order updates, or phone-verification OTPs.

What you need first

  • A WordPress administrator account and a maintained SMS plugin or WooCommerce extension that matches the event you want to trigger.
  • An account with an SMS gateway. The gateway delivers the message; WordPress only passes the event, recipient, and text to that service.
  • The gateway credentials requested by the integration, such as an API key or, for the documented Twilio extension, an Account SID, Auth Token, and purchased sending number.
  • A valid phone number stored on each intended user’s profile or collected by the relevant signup or checkout form. The WooCommerce SMS documentation specifically instructs administrators to ensure member phone numbers are saved or collected through signup.
  • A sender ID or sending number permitted for the destination countries. Coverage, sender-registration rules, and available features vary by provider and region.

Send general WordPress user notifications with WSMS

WSMS is listed in the WordPress.org plugin directory and supports messages to phone numbers, subscribers, and WordPress users, along with notifications, integrations, hooks, and REST API support. Confirm the current gateway list and feature tier in its interface rather than assuming every listed integration is available on your installation.

  1. In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New, search for WSMS or WP SMS, install the listing from VeronaLabs, and activate it.
  2. Open the plugin’s settings, choose a supported SMS gateway, and enter the credentials required by that provider.
  3. Set the sender ID or sending number, then save the settings. Follow the provider’s current country and sender requirements.
  4. Enable the notification, subscription, OTP, or two-factor feature that matches your purpose. Select the WordPress events and recipient groups you actually need.
  5. Check that each recipient has a correctly formatted phone number, then send a test message to a number you control.

The project’s repository documents additional hooks and REST API capabilities, but the plugin directory is the better reference for current installation and update details: WSMS project repository.

Send WooCommerce order-status SMS with Twilio

The WooCommerce Twilio extension is designed for order events rather than arbitrary broadcasts. It can text customers when selected statuses change, alert administrators about new orders, and send a manual message from the Edit Order screen.

  1. Purchase and download the extension ZIP, then go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin in WordPress. Select the ZIP, install it, and activate it.
  2. Create or use a Twilio account and obtain the Account SID, Auth Token, and a purchased Twilio sending number.
  3. Open the extension settings and enter those three values. Configure the order statuses that should send a customer message and edit the message templates.
  4. Review the customer preference setting. The extension recommends leaving the opt-in checkbox unchecked by default. Its documented behavior is that removing the checkbox label disables the checkbox, causing all customers to receive the configured updates; treat this as the extension’s setting behavior, not a universal legal rule.
  5. Ensure customer profiles or checkout data contain usable phone numbers. Place a test order or change an order status using a test customer.

The extension itself has no additional use fee according to its documentation, but Twilio subscription and message-usage charges still apply. A Twilio trial account can send only to destination numbers already verified in that Twilio account. See the complete setup details in WooCommerce Twilio SMS Notifications Documentation.

Require phone verification during registration

For signup verification, use the phone-OTP settings in User Registration for WooCommerce. The documented providers are Twilio and Firebase.

  1. Install and activate the User Registration for WooCommerce extension.
  2. Choose Twilio or Firebase as the SMS OTP provider and enter the credentials requested for that provider.
  3. Configure the OTP message and the registration form’s phone field.
  4. During signup, the visitor enters a phone number, requests a code, and submits the received code for verification.

OTP verification proves control of a phone number at registration time; it does not automatically subscribe the person to marketing texts or configure WooCommerce order notifications.

Configure other WooCommerce and administrator alerts

SMS Customer Notifications for WooCommerce documents customer order-status messages, administrator order and stock alerts, gateway settings, and manual messages. SMS Alert Notifications covers administrator alerts for new user registrations and other store events. Before relying on either, check that the extension is maintained, supports your gateway and country, and exposes the exact trigger you need.

Test delivery and diagnose failures

  1. Use a real phone number you control and send a test from the plugin’s test control, a test order, or a registration form.
  2. Confirm the recipient number includes the correct country code and is stored in the field the integration reads.
  3. Check provider credentials, sender-number approval, account balance, country permissions, and any trial-account restrictions.
  4. Verify that the event actually occurred: the selected order status changed, the registration form requested an OTP, or the WordPress notification event was enabled.
  5. Inspect the extension’s logs, order notes, or provider message log for an error response. Correct the configuration and retest with one recipient before enabling a larger audience.

SMS is not a guaranteed transport. WooCommerce’s Twilio documentation cautions: “SMS messages aren’t 100% reliable and sometimes may get lost.” Keep important account or order information available in WordPress or email rather than making a text the sole record.

Compare plugins and providers on the factors that matter

  • Use case: broad WordPress events, order-status automation, or registration OTP.
  • Gateway and geography: verify supported countries, sender rules, and current gateway availability before committing to an integration.
  • Phone-number collection: decide where numbers are collected, how they are validated, and which workflow is allowed to use them.
  • Preference controls: look for opt-in settings, per-event subscriptions, unsubscribe handling, and editable templates.
  • Message direction: most listed integrations send one-way alerts; confirm two-way or reply handling separately if you need it.
  • Cost and maintenance: budget for provider subscription and per-message charges, and check that the WordPress extension remains updated.

Use consent and data controls deliberately

The reviewed WooCommerce documentation describes an opt-in checkbox but does not establish one consent rule for every country or message type. Separate transactional alerts from marketing, explain what a phone number will receive, limit access to stored numbers, and apply the requirements that govern your business and recipients’ locations. Do not assume that installing a plugin alone satisfies those obligations.
