You can make multiple emoji flood an iMessage screen with Echo, a built-in full-screen effect in Apple’s Messages app. Type the emoji in one message, touch and hold the blue Send arrow, choose Screen, swipe to Echo, then send it.
Quick steps
- Open Messages and enter an iMessage conversation.
- Type several emoji in the same message, such as
😂😂😂or🔥✨🎉. - Touch and hold the blue Send arrow.
- Tap Screen at the top of the effects panel.
- Swipe left through the previews until you see Echo.
- Tap the blue Send arrow to apply the effect.
Apple documents this full-screen path in the iPhone User Guide. The labels and layout may move slightly in future iOS updates, but the key sequence is hold Send → Screen → Echo.
What Echo actually does
Echo repeats the entire message as animated copies across the screen. It does not convert each emoji into a separate sticker or create a reusable video.

For example, if your message is 😍✨🎉, Echo repeats that complete sequence. You can also combine text and emoji, as in No way!!! 😱😱😱. Multiple emoji are not required—a single emoji or a text-only message can also use the effect.

The recipient sees the animation inside Messages. Depending on the device and settings, they may be able to tap Replay beneath the message to watch the effect again.
Echo requires iMessage
Echo is an iMessage full-screen effect, not a normal SMS, MMS, or RCS animation. Look for blue message bubbles and a blue Send arrow before trying it. A green-bubble conversation usually means the message is being sent outside iMessage, so the effect may not be available.

The recipient also needs compatible Apple software for the animation to display as intended. Someone using an older or non-Apple system may receive the message content as ordinary text, or see an indication that an effect was used rather than the animation itself. Apple’s message-effects support page explains these compatibility limitations.

Use Echo when you want repeated copies of an emoji sequence. Use Text Effects when you want one emoji, word, or sentence to shake, grow, ripple, or otherwise animate in place. Apple’s current guide lists Text Effects separately from full-screen effects; Echo is not a new iOS 26 feature, even though the current interface and documentation are updated for newer iOS versions.

If Echo is missing or does not play
The conversation is green
Check that you are messaging the recipient’s Apple device through iMessage. Verify the recipient’s contact details, your internet connection, and that iMessage is enabled. Without iMessage, Echo is not supported as a normal full-screen effect.
The effects panel does not open
Make sure you are touching and holding the Send control. A quick tap sends the message normally. If that happens, type the message again, hold Send, select Screen, choose Echo, and send it.

The preview appears, but the animation is not visible
Motion and playback settings can affect message effects. Check Settings → Accessibility → Motion. Depending on your iOS version, look for Reduce Motion and an option labeled Auto-Play Message Effects. The exact controls vary by release.
Also check that the message is still being delivered through iMessage and that the recipient’s device and software support message effects. Temporary connectivity or Messages problems can prevent an effect from appearing normally.

The recipient sees only text
The message content may still arrive even when the animation does not. This is expected when the recipient is outside iMessage, is using unsupported software, or has settings that limit motion or automatic effect playback. Echo cannot be guaranteed across every messaging platform.
How to cancel an effect
While the effects picker is open, swipe to another effect or use the close/cancel control to return to the unsent message. Nothing is sent until you tap the Send arrow in the effects preview.
Bottom line
There is no separate “multiple emoji” switch or extra app required. Put the emoji in one iMessage, hold Send, open Screen, choose Echo, and send. The feature is playful and attention-grabbing, but its animation depends on iMessage and compatible device settings.
