Instagram does not offer a native anonymous direct-message mode. Its documented messaging system ties a message to the sender’s Instagram account, although a non-follower’s message may arrive as a request. The practical workaround is to share a link from a separate anonymous Q&A service, such as NGL, in an Instagram Story or profile.
That workaround can hide your Instagram username from the recipient, but it does not guarantee anonymity from the service, Meta, or authorities. Read the service’s privacy, moderation, age and billing terms before using it.
Can you send an anonymous DM directly on Instagram?
No. Instagram’s current official messaging documentation describes ordinary messages and message requests, not an anonymous-sender option: Instagram messaging and requests.

A secondary account may hide your identity from the recipient, but it remains an Instagram account and may be linked through profile details, behavior, device information or reports. Encryption protects message content in supported chats; it does not hide the sender’s account from the recipient. Meta explains encrypted conversations here: Instagram encrypted chats.

The legitimate workaround: share an anonymous-message link
With a link-based service, Instagram is only the distribution channel. The submission is handled on the service’s website or app and normally appears in that service’s inbox, not in Instagram Direct.
- Open the service’s official website or its listing in the official app store.
- Create a profile or anonymous-message link if the service requires one.
- Copy the generated link.
- In Instagram, start a Story (usually through Your story or +, then Story).
- Add the link with Instagram’s Link sticker, if it is available on your account.
- Write a clear prompt such as “Ask me anything anonymously.”
- Publish the Story, or place the link in your profile or another permitted location.
- Check the external service’s inbox for submissions.
- Use the service’s reply or sharing feature if you want to answer publicly.
Menu names and availability can differ by device, app version, country, age and account rollout. NGL describes this link-based model in its privacy policy: NGL’s link and messaging model. Its current product site lists Q&A, confession and prompt formats: NGL.
How the sender submits a message
- Tap the shared link and confirm that it opens the intended service domain.
- Read the prompt and the service’s privacy and billing information.
- Type the message without including details that identify you.
- Submit it. Depending on the service, a browser page or app may be required.
Do not install an unfamiliar app, grant unnecessary permissions or enter an Instagram password merely to send one message.

What the recipient can see
The recipient normally sees the text in the third-party inbox and may see technical hints supplied by that service. NGL says it does not store or reveal the sender’s name or social-media handle to the recipient, while its policies describe possible collection or disclosure of information associated with an IP address, browser user agent, approximate location, device, carrier or software version. Those properties are hints, not proof of identity: NGL privacy information and NGL’s current privacy policy.

Do not assume a paid “reveal” identifies the sender
A subscription may provide properties or guesses rather than a real name. The FTC alleged that NGL marketed paid NGL Pro features as if they could reveal senders, used fake computer-generated messages and charged some users recurring weekly fees of up to $9.99 without adequate consent. The 2024 settlement included $4.5 million for consumer redress and a ban on offering the app to people under 18: FTC action involving NGL.
The FTC announced a refund process for some NGL Pro users charged between January 2022 and July 2024; the April 6, 2026 claim deadline has passed: FTC refund announcement and settlement information.

Sendit is another example of this category. In September 2025, the FTC alleged that its operator used fake messages, misleading Diamond Membership identity claims, children’s data practices and recurring charges of up to $9.99 per week. Those are allegations, not proof that every current message behaves that way: FTC complaint concerning Sendit.
Before paying, check the exact wording, renewal interval, cancellation route, refund terms and what information—if any—the feature actually supplies. Never treat a “hint” as a verified identity.
How to choose a service responsibly
- Age rules: Confirm the current minimum age and parental or child-safety requirements.
- Data collection: Look for IP, browser, device, location, phone and social-account collection.
- Moderation: Check filtering, word blocking, reporting and response processes.
- Controls: Look for link pausing, blocking, deletion and inbox controls.
- Account access: A service should not need your Instagram password to receive submissions.
- Billing: Determine whether charges recur weekly or monthly and how cancellation works.
- Regulatory history: Search for privacy, consumer-protection and billing enforcement.
- Deletion: Confirm whether you can remove the link, messages and account.
NGL says it has added age verification, Team NGL labels, hidden words, blocking, pausing, filtering and reporting controls; these are the company’s stated features, not an independent safety certification: NGL user-control announcement.

Troubleshooting common problems
The link does not open
- Copy it again from the official service.
- Test it in a private browser window.
- Use the official domain instead of a shortened or forwarded URL.
- Update the app only through the official app store.
- Recreate or pause and re-enable the link if the service supports that option.
The recipient cannot find a submission
Check the external inbox, including spam, filtered or hidden folders. Confirm that the link was public and that the sender completed submission; moderation may have held or removed the message.
A page asks for an Instagram password
Close it. Do not enter credentials on an unfamiliar page. Navigate directly to Instagram or the service’s verified domain instead.
A message seems automated
Treat it as unverified. Regulatory complaints involving NGL and Sendit alleged fake or computer-generated messages, so a message that sounds provocative is not proof that a friend or follower wrote it.

What to do about harassment or threats
- Do not reply to threats, extortion or harassment.
- Save screenshots, the message URL and timestamps.
- Use the service’s block, filter, pause and report controls.
- Remove the link from Instagram if unwanted submissions continue.
- Restrict or block an Instagram account if the sender becomes identifiable.
- Report credible threats, stalking, sexual exploitation, blackmail or imminent danger to appropriate authorities.
Instagram says message and chat reports are anonymous except in intellectual-property cases. Use its reporting tools for related Instagram activity: report a message or chat and manage hidden message requests.
Alternatives when anonymity is not essential

For anything involving safety, abuse or confidential reporting, a dedicated secure contact channel is generally more appropriate than an entertainment-focused anonymous-message app.
