You do not need to call doc.save() or create a local file. The right request body depends on the API: send the Blob itself when the endpoint accepts raw PDF bytes, or append it to FormData when the endpoint expects a named file field.
Choose the request format your API expects
Before writing the upload code, check the endpoint documentation for its route, accepted content type, body format, file-field name, authentication requirements, and response format. A browser can construct either of the common request shapes below, but it cannot tell you which one a particular server accepts.
| Request format | What you send | What to confirm in the API contract |
|---|---|---|
| Raw PDF body | The PDF Blob is the entire request body. | That the endpoint accepts PDF bytes and the required media type, commonly application/pdf. |
| Multipart file | A FormData body containing the Blob under a named field. |
The exact field name, any other required form fields, and whether the endpoint accepts multipart uploads. |
Authentication, route, and response handling also come from the target API’s contract. Do not assume that a route accepts both formats just because both are valid browser requests.
Generate the PDF in memory
Once you have a jsPDF document, call output("blob") to get a browser Blob. The following example creates a small document and keeps its PDF data in memory:

import { jsPDF } from "jspdf";
const doc = new jsPDF();
doc.text("Hello world!", 10, 10);
const pdfBlob = doc.output("blob");
This produces a value you can send to another API. By contrast, doc.save() is for saving or downloading the PDF through the browser; it is not needed for an in-memory upload. The jsPDF project documents both Blob and ArrayBuffer output. Its live documentation tracks the master branch rather than a pinned release, so check the documentation for the version installed in your application if an older release behaves differently.
Send raw PDF bytes with fetch
Use this pattern when the endpoint expects the PDF itself as the request body. Set the content type required by the API; application/pdf is a common choice, but the endpoint contract is authoritative.
import { jsPDF } from "jspdf";
const doc = new jsPDF();
doc.text("Hello world!", 10, 10);
const pdfBlob = doc.output("blob");
const response = await fetch("/api/documents", {
method: "POST",
headers: {
"Content-Type": "application/pdf",
},
body: pdfBlob,
});
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`Upload failed: ${response.status}`);
}
// Read the response according to the API contract, if needed.
const result = await response.json();
Replace /api/documents with the endpoint you are actually authorized to call. If the API uses a different content type, authentication header, or success-response format, change those details to match its documentation. The example reads JSON only as an illustration; do not call response.json() if the endpoint returns an empty response, text, or another format.

Send the PDF as a multipart file
Use multipart when the server expects a file field, often alongside other form values. The field name below is file only as an example; use the exact key specified by the endpoint.
import { jsPDF } from "jspdf";
const doc = new jsPDF();
doc.text("Hello world!", 10, 10);
const pdfBlob = doc.output("blob");
const formData = new FormData();
formData.append("file", pdfBlob, "document.pdf");
const response = await fetch("/api/documents", {
method: "POST",
body: formData,
});
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`Upload failed: ${response.status}`);
}
Do not manually set Content-Type: multipart/form-data for this browser fetch() call. The browser needs to add the multipart boundary that separates the fields, and it sets the complete content type for the FormData body. If the endpoint requires more fields, add them with formData.append("fieldName", value) using the names and value types in its contract.
Add authentication and handle the response
If the API uses a bearer token, for example, add the header it documents to the raw-body request:

const response = await fetch("/api/documents", {

headers: {
"Content-Type": "application/pdf",
"Authorization": `Bearer ${token}`,
},
body: pdfBlob,
});
if (!response.ok) {
const message = await response.text();
throw new Error(`Upload failed: ${response.status} ${message}`);
}
For multipart, add authentication headers in the same way, but leave the multipart content type to the browser. Never place a secret API credential in browser code if it is meant to remain private: browser-delivered code is visible to its users. In that case, send the PDF to your own server and have that server call the protected API.
fetch() resolves with a Response when the server returns an HTTP error status such as 400 or 500; promise fulfillment alone does not mean the upload succeeded. Check response.ok or response.status, then parse the response body according to the endpoint’s documented response format.
Use ArrayBuffer when the consuming code requires it
jsPDF also documents doc.output("arraybuffer"). Use it when the library or code receiving the data specifically expects an ArrayBuffer or a typed array. For a straightforward browser upload, Blob output is usually more direct: it can be used as the request body or appended to FormData without an additional conversion.

Troubleshoot common upload failures
The server says no file was supplied
- Check whether the endpoint expects raw PDF bytes or multipart form data. A raw Blob body is not a multipart file field.
- For multipart, verify the exact field key expected by the server. A field called
filewill not work if the API expects another name. - Check the endpoint route and any required accompanying form fields against the API documentation.
The request completes but the upload is reported as failed
Inspect response.ok and response.status, and read the response body if the API returns an error message. HTTP errors still produce a Response object, so code that only awaits fetch() can miss a failed upload.
The browser reports a cross-origin or CORS error
The API server must permit the browser page’s origin and the relevant request under its CORS configuration. Check the server’s allowed origins, request headers, credentials policy, and any preflight handling against that API’s configuration. Browser-side JavaScript cannot override a server’s CORS policy; if you cannot change it, a server-side upload may be appropriate. CORS behavior is specific to the endpoint and cannot be inferred from the fact that the request uses fetch.
Uploaded PDF text looks wrong
Garbled or missing glyphs are generally a PDF font issue rather than an upload-transport issue. The jsPDF project notes that its 14 standard PDF fonts are limited to the ASCII code page. For UTF-8 text that needs other glyphs, integrate a TTF font containing the required characters, then generate and upload the document again.

The code works in one setup but not another
Confirm the jsPDF version and its output support in the environment where the code runs. The cited project documentation follows the master branch and does not establish behavior for every historical release. Also check whether your runtime has browser APIs such as fetch, Blob, and FormData; the examples here are browser-side patterns.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not an endpoint for uploading a jsPDF document. If your underlying need is instead to capture a web page as an image or PDF, its API can return that capture directly. Here is a one-call cURL example for a page capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for its request options. It accepts cookie-consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Memory: In-memory output avoids creating a local download-and-reupload step, but the generated Blob still occupies memory while your code and browser hold references to it. Release references when the document is no longer needed, especially in workflows that create many PDFs.
- Retries: Retry only when appropriate for the endpoint. A network interruption can leave the client unsure whether the server processed the upload; follow the API’s guidance on idempotency or duplicate submissions before automatically retrying.
- Size limits: No universal maximum PDF size or request timeout is specified here. Check the specific API’s limits and client/server timeouts, particularly for large documents.
- Costs: The browser APIs and jsPDF output pattern do not establish a fee. Any upload charges, storage fees, rate limits, or usage quotas depend on the API you are calling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does generating the PDF with output("blob") save it to the user’s device?
No. It returns a Blob in memory; saving or downloading requires a separate action such as jsPDF’s save flow.
Can I use this approach with any API?
Only if that API accepts the body format, media type, authentication, and request shape you send. Its documentation determines those requirements.
