To find an old text on Android, open the messaging app that contains your conversations and use its search. In Google Messages, tap Search on the conversation list, enter a word, phrase, name, or number, then open a matching result. The exact controls vary by app and phone: Android does not have one universal text-message search screen.
Search messages in Google Messages
- Open Google Messages.
- From the conversation list, tap Search or the search field.
- Enter a distinctive word, phrase, contact name, or phone number. Examples include a street name, business, order number, or part of a confirmation code.
- Review the matching results and tap the conversation or message you want.
Google documents search for messages, photos, places, and more. Its help page notes that some steps work on Android 6.0 and newer; availability and labels can still vary by app version. See Google’s Google Messages search instructions.
Narrow the search with filters
If a term returns too many matches, use a filter when one appears. Google Messages filters cover SMS, MMS, and RCS messages; these are different message types, but they can appear in the same conversation interface.

- Unread: Limit results to messages you have not opened.
- Starred: Find messages you previously marked as important.
- Known or Unknown: Separate messages from saved contacts from those sent by people not saved in Contacts.
- SIM 1 or SIM 2: On a dual-SIM phone, narrow results to the line associated with a message.
Not every filter will be shown on every phone or in every search. Google describes the available filters and categories in its Google Messages filter guide.

Find the right messaging app on a Galaxy or other Android phone
Search happens in the app holding the conversation, which may be Google Messages, Samsung Messages, a manufacturer’s app, or a third-party SMS app. Open the app where you normally read texts and look for a magnifying-glass icon or search field, often near the top of the conversation list. Labels and placement depend on the app, model, and version.
Samsung Galaxy phones
Samsung’s current Galaxy guidance shows searching in Google Messages: open the app, tap Search, and search for a message or contact. Samsung says Google Messages is available for Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 8.0 or later, subject to device availability. See Samsung’s Galaxy search instructions.

Some Galaxy phones may still have Samsung Messages and older conversations there. Do not assume that every Galaxy uses the same app or that Samsung Messages search works exactly like Google Messages. If you switch apps, Samsung says messages become available in Google Messages on supported configurations, but that is not a guarantee for every device or backup. Check Samsung’s migration guidance and keep the old app installed until you confirm your conversations are available.

- Try a different search term. Use a shorter phrase, the sender’s number, a distinctive name, or alternate spelling. A street name may work better than the generic word “address.”
- Check the app. Search in the app that originally held the conversation; messages may not be in the app currently set as default.
- Look in Archived. Archived conversations disappear from the Home screen but remain readable. In Google Messages, open the profile or menu control and choose Archived. See Google’s archived conversation guidance.
- Check Trash. If you deleted the conversation, it may be recoverable from the app’s Trash; steps differ between Google Messages and Samsung Messages.
- Consider a recent phone change or reset. A message may exist only in a backup or may not yet have been restored to the active message app.
- Check other services. A conversation in WhatsApp, Signal, Facebook Messenger, or email will not appear in an SMS search.
- Consider what is being searched. Text inside a linked page or attachment may not be exposed as searchable message text.
Search from a computer
Google Messages for web lets you review conversations on a larger screen. It pairs with the Android phone rather than acting as a separate archive, so it will not recover messages missing from the phone. Google lists Android 5.0 or newer, an up-to-date Google Messages app, internet access on the phone, and a supported modern browser with internet access on the computer. SMS sent through the web still uses the phone connection, so carrier charges may apply; only one computer can be active at a time. Follow Google’s Messages for web setup instructions.

Archived conversations
An archived conversation is hidden from the main list, not deleted. Open Archived in Google Messages to read it or unarchive it. Samsung also describes this route for finding archived conversations in its Galaxy recovery guidance.

Google Messages Trash
Google’s current documentation describes a Trash folder with a 30-day restoration window before permanent deletion. If the feature is available in your app version, open Google Messages, tap your profile picture or More, choose Trash, touch and hold the conversation, then tap Restore. Restoring is necessary before you can view the conversation. See Google’s Trash instructions.
Samsung Messages Trash
If the conversation is in Samsung Messages, Samsung’s documented steps are to open the app, tap the three-dot menu, choose Trash, select the message, and tap Restore. Availability depends on the app and device. Samsung also covers message backup and restoration in its message backup guide.

When a backup may help
A backup is for restoring messages, not usually for browsing them as a searchable document on a computer. Google says Android backups can include SMS and MMS, but restore options depend on the device and Android version; a backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored to a device running an older version. Check Google’s backup and restore guidance.
Galaxy users may have Samsung Cloud, Google backup, or Smart Switch, depending on what was enabled and the device. Samsung says Smart Switch backup files cannot simply be read as messages on a computer; messages become readable after restoration or transfer to a phone. These options help only if the relevant messages were included in a usable backup. See Samsung’s message backup and restore information.
Be cautious with message-recovery apps
SMS and notification access can expose private conversations and one-time verification codes. Google notes that apps may access messages when granted the required permissions; review SMS and notification access in Android settings, and be wary of third-party recovery tools asking for broad SMS, notification, accessibility, or cloud access.
