Why ordinary screenshots miss menus
Dropdowns, right-click menus and hover menus often disappear as soon as another window receives focus. Starting an immediate capture with Windows logo key + Shift + S can therefore close the menu before you can select it. The full Snipping Tool app solves that timing problem by starting the capture first and giving you a countdown to open the menu.
Microsoft documents a delay from one to five seconds and lists Alt+D as the keyboard shortcut for the delay control. A five-second delay is the safest choice when you must move the pointer to another part of the screen or open several nested menus.
Method 1: capture a menu with Snipping Tool Delay
- Open the full app. Search for Snipping Tool from Start and launch it. You can also start a quick snip with Windows logo key + Shift + S or Print Screen, but those shortcuts do not give you the full app’s delay setup before the capture.
- Set the delay. In the Snipping Tool window, select Delay and choose a value from 1 to 5 seconds. Choose five seconds if the menu takes time to reach; use one or two seconds when the menu is already one click away.
- Choose a mode. Select Rectangle for a normal dropdown or context menu. Use Window when the entire application window matters, Full screen for everything visible on the displays, or Free-form for an irregular outline.
- Start the countdown. Select New. The countdown begins immediately.
- Open the menu. Before the countdown ends, click the control that opens the dropdown, right-click for a context menu, or hover over the item that reveals a fly-out menu. Keep the pointer and focus where the menu needs them.
- Select the capture. When the screen turns gray or dims, drag around the open menu. Release the pointer to create the snip.
- Finish in the editor. The result opens in Snipping Tool. From there you can save it, copy it, annotate it with Pen or Highlighter, or share it.

Choosing the right delay

| The button and menu are already beside the pointer | 1–2 seconds | Reduces the time the menu must remain open. |
| A menu requires moving to another window or screen | 3–4 seconds | Leaves time to move without rushing. |
| A nested, hover or multi-step menu | 5 seconds | Gives the maximum documented setup time. |
The delay is a maximum of five seconds in Microsoft’s documented controls. If you cannot reach the menu in that time, repeat the capture with a faster path or use the already-open method below.
Method 2: capture a menu that is already open
If the dropdown or context menu is visible and remains open, use Microsoft’s direct sequence:
- Open Snipping Tool.
- Open the menu you want to capture.
- Press Ctrl + PrtSc.
- Choose a snipping mode and select the area containing the menu.
This approach avoids setting a timer, so it is useful when the menu is already positioned correctly. It is less suitable for a menu that closes whenever you click elsewhere; in that case, configure Delay before opening the menu.
Which snipping mode should you use?

Rectangle is usually the clearest choice for a tutorial image because it keeps the menu readable without adding unrelated desktop content. Window or Full screen is better when the reader must see which application, dialog or monitor the menu belongs to.

Practical timing and focus tips
- Open the full app first. Configure Delay before starting the capture. The immediate shortcut is convenient for static content but gives no preparation time for a menu that vanishes on focus change.
- Use the five-second setting for hover menus. Move to the parent item during the countdown, then hover over the exact entry that reveals the submenu. Keep the pointer still until the screen dims.
- Right-click only after starting New. If you open a context menu first and then click Snipping Tool, the click normally changes focus and closes the menu.
- Plan the pointer route. Place the Snipping Tool window where it will not cover the menu, then start the countdown. Avoid moving across controls that trigger other menus on the way.
- Capture enough surrounding context. Include the control that opened the menu when readers need to understand where the options came from. Crop or annotate later if the menu itself must be emphasized.
- Repeat rather than forcing a bad frame. If the menu closes before the dimmed selection screen appears, start another New capture with a longer delay or use Ctrl + PrtSc after reopening it.
Save, copy, annotate and share the snip
After you release the selection, Snipping Tool opens the image in its editor. Use Ctrl+S or Save Snip to write a file, and use Ctrl+C to copy the capture for an email, document or chat. The Pen and Highlighter tools can mark the relevant menu item before you save or share it. If you only need to paste the screenshot once, copying from the editor avoids creating a temporary file.
Save the original unmarked capture when the image may be reused. For instructions, documentation or support tickets, an annotated copy can make the target command obvious, but annotations permanently change that saved version.
Troubleshooting
The menu disappears as soon as I start capture
Do not open the menu before configuring the capture. Launch the full Snipping Tool app, set Delay, select the mode, choose New, and open the menu during the countdown. The timer prevents the setup click from stealing focus at the wrong moment.
One or five seconds is not enough
Five seconds is the longest delay documented by Microsoft. Simplify the route to the menu, move the Snipping Tool window out of the way before selecting New, or repeat the operation with the menu’s trigger already under the pointer. For an already-open menu, try Ctrl + PrtSc instead of a delayed capture.

I captured the wrong area
Choose Rectangle and begin the drag just outside the menu’s outer edge. Include shadows, separators and the control that opened the menu when they carry meaning. If the entire application is relevant, switch to Window mode rather than trying to make a very large rectangle.
The capture contains too much of the desktop
Use Rectangle instead of Full screen, or use Window mode if the menu belongs to a single application. You can also select a tighter region on a second attempt; the delay and menu-opening steps stay the same.
The image is hard to read after sharing
Capture at the display’s normal scale and include enough of the menu for its labels to remain legible. Copying the snip from Snipping Tool preserves the captured pixels; avoid repeatedly resizing it in other applications before sending it.
