Press Windows logo key + Print Screen (PrtSc) while both displays are connected and set to Extend. Windows captures the extended desktop and normally saves one image in PicturesScreenshots. The exact result can vary with your Windows build, monitor arrangement, resolution, orientation and scaling.
Capture both monitors with one shortcut
This is the quickest built-in Windows 11 workflow when you want the entire desktop rather than a single window.
- Set the displays to Extend. Open Settings > System > Display. Select Extend these displays so Windows treats the monitors as one desktop instead of mirroring them.
- Arrange the monitors. In the display diagram, drag the numbered screens until their physical left-right or top-bottom position matches your desk. Select Identify if you need to see which number belongs to each panel. The arrangement controls where each monitor appears in the combined screenshot.
- Capture and save. Press Windows logo key + Print Screen. The displays may briefly darken. Windows writes the full-screen capture through its standard Screenshots workflow.
- Open the file. In File Explorer, go to
PicturesScreenshots. The file is an image of the extended desktop; its proportions reflect the combined monitor layout.
Microsoft documents Print Screen as a full-screen capture key and Windows + Print Screen as the save-to-file shortcut. A Microsoft Q&A report describes the shortcut capturing a main and secondary monitor, but monitor configurations and Windows builds can produce different results.
Choose the right Windows capture method
| Shortcut or tool | Scope | Destination | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows + Print Screen | Full extended desktop, usually both monitors | Automatically saved image | Fast, repeatable dual-monitor captures | Less control over the selected area; behavior can vary with scaling and display layouts |
| Print Screen | Entire screen image | Clipboard | When you want to paste into Paint or another editor before saving | You must press Ctrl + V and save manually |
| Windows + Shift + S | Rectangle, freeform, window or full-screen selection | Snipping Tool capture workflow | When you need a custom region across part or all of the desktop | Cross-monitor selection can act differently with mixed scaling or on some builds |
| Alt + Print Screen | Active window only | Clipboard | Capturing one foreground application | It is not a complete capture of both monitors |
Use Snipping Tool for a custom area
Use Windows logo key + Shift + S when the full desktop contains material you do not want to share, or when you need a precise crop.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Press Windows + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay.
- Choose Rectangle, Freeform, Window or Full screen.
- For a region spanning monitors, choose Rectangle and drag across the required portion of the combined desktop.
- Use the Snipping Tool notification and editor to review the result, then save it to your chosen location.
A rectangle that crosses displays may be cropped or stretched when the monitors use different scale settings. If the selection does not line up, use Windows + Print Screen for the complete desktop, or temporarily make the display scaling consistent while you capture.
Make the combined desktop predictable
Check the display mode
Mirrored displays show the same desktop on both panels; they do not create a wider workspace. Return to Settings > System > Display and select Extend these displays before capturing.

Match the on-screen arrangement to the desk
Windows builds one virtual desktop from the monitor rectangles shown in Display settings. If the secondary monitor is positioned above the primary in that diagram, it appears above the primary in the image, even if the physical screens are side by side. A small offset also creates a corresponding offset in the screenshot.
Review resolution, orientation and scale
Different resolutions, portrait orientation and display scaling are supported, but they change the dimensions and alignment of the combined image. Intentional settings reduce empty bands, unexpected cropping and apparent stretching. Check each display’s resolution, orientation and scale under Settings > System > Display before an important capture.

Troubleshoot a partial, stretched or missing capture
Only one monitor appears
- Confirm both screens are detected in Settings > System > Display.
- Change the multiple-display setting to Extend these displays, then retry Windows + Print Screen.
- Verify that you are not using Alt + Print Screen, which captures only the active window.
- If the built-in shortcut still captures one screen, use Windows + Shift + S and test a full-screen or rectangle selection. Results can differ by Windows build and hardware configuration.
The image is cropped or stretched
- Open Display settings and make sure the numbered monitors are arranged intentionally.
- Check for mismatched scale percentages, resolutions or portrait/landscape orientation.
- For a custom Snipping Tool rectangle, begin and end the drag inside the visible desktop boundaries; mixed scaling can make cross-monitor coordinates appear different from the pointer position.
Windows + Print Screen does nothing
- Press the keys together rather than Print Screen alone; Print Screen by itself places the image on the clipboard.
- Look in
PicturesScreenshotsinstead of expecting an editor window. - Use Print Screen, open Paint, press Ctrl + V and save manually if the automatic file workflow is not responding.
- For Snipping Tool failures, update the app and, in Windows app settings, try its Repair or Reset option before testing again. These steps address reported overlay and capture failures but are not guaranteed for every configuration.
The file is not where expected
Windows + Print Screen uses the standard Screenshots location under your Pictures folder. If your Pictures folder is redirected to another drive or cloud provider, follow that folder’s current location in File Explorer. A Print Screen-only capture has no file until you paste and save it.
Save and share a dual-monitor image safely
Full-desktop captures can include notifications, private messages, browser tabs and data on both screens. Before sharing, open the image in an editor and crop or obscure anything confidential. A custom Snipping Tool rectangle is safer when you already know which region is public. Keep the original full capture separate from the edited copy if you may need it for troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Windows combine monitors with different resolutions?
Yes, Windows can build an extended desktop from displays with different resolutions, but the resulting image follows their virtual arrangement and may show alignment differences or stretching. Review Display settings before capturing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I use when I need only a portion of both screens?
Open Snipping Tool with Windows + Shift + S and choose Rectangle, then drag across the required area. If mixed scaling makes the selection inaccurate, capture the full desktop with Windows + Print Screen and crop the saved file afterward.
The Bottom Line
For a complete dual-monitor image in Windows 11, use Extend mode and press Windows + Print Screen. Use Snipping Tool when you need a selected region, and check display arrangement and scaling whenever the result is cropped or stretched.
