If an Android app blocks screenshots, there usually isn’t a supported button or setting that overrides the restriction. A common cause is Android’s FLAG_SECURE window setting, which tells the system not to include protected content in screenshots or show it on non-secure displays. Use the app’s own export or sharing option, request an approved copy, or contact the provider instead of trying to defeat the protection.

First, check whether the screen is actually blocked

Android’s ordinary screenshot controls work on screens that allow capture. On most devices, open the screen and press Power + Volume Down at the same time. Some phones also offer a screenshot control from the menu that appears when you hold Power. Button combinations and menus can vary by device maker, so consult the phone manufacturer’s instructions if neither option is available.

If Android displays “Can’t take screenshot due to security policy,” or the resulting image is blank, the app, Android, or a device-management rule may be preventing capture. Those symptoms do not identify the exact cause by themselves. App-specific restrictions, a work profile or administrator policy, device behavior, and the Android version can all affect what happens.

For a screen that permits capture

  1. Open the screen you want to save.
  2. Press Power + Volume Down together. If your phone offers a Power-button menu screenshot control, you can use that instead.
  3. Look for the screenshot preview or notification to confirm that an image was created. The location and appearance of that confirmation vary by device.

For a long, scrollable screen

On Android 12 and later, many scrollable screens offer Capture more after you take a screenshot. Follow the on-screen controls to extend the capture, then save it. This is a convenience for supported, scrollable screens—not a method for capturing a protected one. Availability depends on the screen and device.

Why some apps prevent screenshots

A common Android mechanism is FLAG_SECURE, a window setting that marks an app screen as unsuitable for screenshots and non-secure displays. Android’s developer documentation describes non-secure displays as including a TV or projector. Under documented circumstances, the system returns a blank capture rather than showing the protected content.

This can be an intentional privacy or security measure. Android identifies banking apps and password managers as examples of apps that may protect sensitive screens. An app may apply the restriction to only some parts of its interface, such as a login or financial-information screen, rather than to every screen.

FLAG_SECURE is a common platform mechanism, not a diagnosis of your particular app or phone. A managed-device rule or an app’s own behavior may also be involved. If the restriction is unexpected, the app provider or your device administrator is better placed to explain it than a screenshot error message alone.

Why pressing the buttons again usually does not help

The hardware-button shortcut asks Android to take a normal screenshot; it does not grant permission to capture a protected window. Repeating the shortcut, switching to a different screenshot app, or changing the screenshot format does not turn a protected screen into an allowed one.

What to do when capture is blocked

Choose a route that preserves the information with the app provider’s or account owner’s authorization. A screenshot may not be necessary if you need the underlying statement, receipt, document, or record.

  1. Look for an in-app option. Check for Share, Export, Download, Print, or Save. If the provider supplies one, it may produce a clearer, more useful copy than an image.
  2. Request an approved copy. Ask the account owner or service for the document or an approved way to retain it. This is especially useful when you need evidence or a record that must remain readable.
  3. Contact the app’s support team. Explain what information you need and why, and ask which supported method is available. The provider may be able to direct you to an export or provide a copy.
  4. Ask the device administrator if it is a managed device. If the phone belongs to an employer or uses a managed work profile, ask the administrator whether a policy is enforcing the restriction. Do not assume an app-level setting can be changed by the user.

Google Play policy requires apps to respect other apps’ FLAG_SECURE declarations and prohibits workarounds that bypass them. Its accessibility-tool policy has a narrow exception, but it does not make protected content generally available to transmit, save, or cache outside the device. Accessibility tools are not a general-purpose way to capture blocked screens.

Can screen recording or casting capture a blocked screen?

Do not count on it. Android’s secure-window behavior also limits display on non-secure outputs, which can include casting. A protected app may therefore blank or restrict its content in a recording or on an external display.

Android notes that FLAG_SECURE does not always correctly predict whether screen recording is active. Recorder behavior can vary, so it would be too broad to say every recorder behaves identically. The practical point is that recording is not a dependable or supported substitute for an app-approved copy.

Starting a normal screen recording

On supported devices, open Quick Settings by pulling down from the top of the screen twice, then tap Screen record. Choose audio or touch-indicator options if offered and start recording. If the app protects its screen, the content may still appear blank or be restricted; the recording controls do not override that protection.

Screenshot detection is different from screenshot prevention

Android 14 introduced a privacy-preserving screenshot-detection API. An app can register a callback for a supported hardware-button screenshot event. The callback tells the app that the event occurred; it does not give the app the screenshot image.

That detection API is not the mechanism that blocks content from appearing in a capture. Android documents FLAG_SECURE as the control for preventing a protected window from appearing in screenshots or on non-secure displays. The Android 14 detection documentation, last updated September 16, 2026, describes detection of a specific combination of hardware-button presses; it does not detect ADB screenshot test commands.

What Android’s capture restrictions mean for developers

If you build an Android app, treat screenshot prevention and screenshot detection as separate design decisions. The Android Developers page “Secure sensitive activities,” updated March 6, 2026, documents FLAG_SECURE for sensitive windows and discusses its use for preventing screenshots and display on non-secure outputs. The separate Android 14 screenshot-detection API reports qualifying screenshot events to an app; it does not supply the image.

Do not assume that detection alone protects sensitive content: being notified of a screenshot event is not the same as preventing capture. Likewise, do not represent FLAG_SECURE as a universal security boundary for every possible capture path. Android’s documentation notes a limitation on Android 11 (API 30) and lower: the flag is reliable on around 70% of devices in the particular context discussed, because keyboard taps can be recorded on some devices. That figure is specifically qualified for Android 11 and lower; it is not a measurement for current Android versions or all phones.

For a legitimate testing workflow, use the documented app behavior and test environments available to your team rather than trying to capture another app’s protected information. Android’s screen-reading guidance distinguishes silent screen-buffer capture from user-consented MediaProjection flows; a consent-based flow should not be treated as permission to evade another app’s protected-window declaration.

Troubleshooting common screenshot problems

What you see Possible explanation What to do
“Can’t take screenshot due to security policy” An app restriction or device-management policy may prohibit capture. Use the app’s approved export or sharing route. If the phone is managed, ask the administrator whether a policy applies.
A screenshot is created but the app area is blank The window may be protected from screenshots, including through FLAG_SECURE. Request an authorized copy or use an in-app method; do not rely on another capture app to expose the protected content.
Power + Volume Down does nothing The button timing, device controls, or manufacturer-specific procedure may differ. Try the device’s Power-button menu if available and consult the manufacturer’s screenshot instructions.
Capture more does not appear The screen may not be a supported scrollable screen, or the feature may not be available in that context. Use a supported export or capture the screen in allowed sections if that meets your need. Scrolling capture is not an override for protected screens.
A recording or cast shows a blank area The app may prevent its protected window from appearing on non-secure outputs. Stop treating recording or casting as a workaround and ask the provider for an approved copy.
A work app blocks capture but a personal app does not A work profile or organization policy may apply to the managed app or device. Check with the administrator responsible for the work profile instead of attempting to change or evade the policy.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a way to capture a native Android app or override FLAG_SECURE. If the material you need is available as a public webpage and that page permits capture, one GET request can save a web screenshot. The API also supports PDF output. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

For example, this cURL command captures a webpage as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. The service is made by Yorker Media; see ScreenshotNeo for details and sign up for free.
