Capture a single window with the keyboard shortcut
This is the quickest built-in method when you already know which window you want. It works without opening another application.
- Bring the target window into view. Make sure the window is visible and positioned as you want it captured.
- Start area-selection mode. Press and release Shift-Command-4.
- Switch to window mode. Press and release Space. The pointer changes to a camera icon.
- Capture the window. Move the camera over the target window and click.
- Choose what happens next. Click the floating thumbnail to edit the image, or wait for the thumbnail to disappear while the screenshot saves.
The camera pointer is the confirmation that macOS is targeting an entire window rather than asking you to draw a rectangular selection. If the wrong window highlights, move the pointer before clicking.
Remove the drop shadow
macOS normally includes the window’s shadow. To capture the window without that shadow, hold Option while clicking. This is useful when the screenshot will be placed on a colored page, aligned with other images, or processed automatically.

Cancel before taking the picture
Press Escape before clicking a window to leave capture mode without creating a screenshot. This is safer than clicking an unintended window and deleting the resulting file.
Use the Screenshot utility when you need options
Press Shift-Command-5 to open macOS’s built-in Screenshot utility. Select its window-capture control, then click the window you want. This takes a little longer than the keyboard sequence but exposes settings that are not visible in the one-shot workflow.
Set a timer
Open the utility’s Options menu and choose a timer. A delay gives you time to open a menu, move a pointer, or arrange a window before capture. Use the shortest delay that gives you enough time; a longer delay increases the chance that the window state changes before the image is taken.
Change the save location
By default, window screenshots are saved to the desktop. In Options, choose a different save location if you want captures to go directly to a project folder or another destination. Changing this setting is preferable to repeatedly moving files after capture.

The utility can show a floating thumbnail after capture. Leave it enabled when you want to open the markup editor immediately or drag the image somewhere else. Turn it off when you are taking many screenshots and want each file to be saved without an on-screen interruption.

Show or hide the pointer
The Screenshot utility’s options include pointer visibility. Enable it when the cursor is part of a demonstration; disable it for a clean product or documentation image. The pointer setting applies to captures made through the utility.
Save a window screenshot to the Clipboard
If you need to paste the image into a document, chat, issue tracker, or image editor rather than create a desktop file, hold Control while pressing the screenshot shortcut. For the window workflow, press Control-Shift-Command-4, press Space, and click the window. The capture is routed to the Clipboard instead of being saved as a desktop file.
You can also Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard. This is useful when you want to inspect the thumbnail first, then decide whether to keep a file or paste the image directly.

What a window capture includes
Window mode captures the selected window as macOS presents it at the moment you click. Keep the complete window visible if you need its title bar, controls, or surrounding shadow. If another window overlaps it, rearrange the desktop first so the target is unobstructed.
Some applications restrict screenshots. Apple specifically notes that apps such as Apple TV may not let you take screenshots of their windows. A failed capture in one app does not mean the shortcut is incorrect; the application may be preventing the operating-system capture.

macOS Tahoe 26 and later: SDR and HDR choices
On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot includes an SDR option that uses PNG and an HDR option that uses HEIF. This is conditional: it depends on both the macOS version and Mac support. Do not assume that every Mac offers the HDR choice or that every screenshot uses HEIF.
For broad compatibility with ordinary image tools and documentation systems, use the SDR choice when it is available and your workflow expects PNG. Choose HDR only when your display, editor, and destination all support the resulting HEIF workflow.
Troubleshooting window screenshots
The camera pointer never appears
- Press and release Shift-Command-4 first, then press and release Space. Holding both combinations as one continuous press can leave you in a different capture mode.
- Try Shift-Command-5 and choose the window-capture control if you prefer visible controls.
The screenshot captures a rectangle instead of a window
You are still in area-selection mode. Press Space after starting with Shift-Command-4; wait for the pointer to change to a camera before clicking.
The window shadow is visible
Cancel with Escape and repeat the capture while holding Option as you click. The modifier must be held at the moment of the click.
The file is not where you expected
Check the desktop first, because that is the default location. If you used the Screenshot utility, open Options and inspect the selected save location. A floating thumbnail can also be dragged to another location.

Nothing appears after capture
Look for the floating thumbnail and wait briefly for it to finish saving. If you used a Control modifier, the image may be on the Clipboard rather than in a folder. Paste into an image-capable application to verify it.

Some apps block window screenshots. Apple lists Apple TV as an example. There is no Screenshot utility setting that guarantees a capture from an application that deliberately prevents it.
The result has the wrong pointer or timing
Use Shift-Command-5, open Options, and adjust the timer and pointer visibility before trying again. The panel-based workflow is the practical choice when the shortcut does not provide enough control.
