These shortcuts capture what is visible on your display; they do not automatically create an image of a long webpage that continues below the viewport.
Apple documents these controls in Take a screenshot on Mac. The instructions below explain which method to choose, how to control the output, and what to do when “screenshot a website” actually means preserving an entire webpage.
Choose the right capture scope

By default, macOS saves a screenshot to the desktop. The exact image format depends on your Mac and Screenshot settings; supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later can choose SDR/PNG or HDR/HEIF in the Screenshot app.
Capture the entire visible screen
- Arrange Safari, Chrome, or another browser so the website looks the way you want.
- Press and release Shift-Command-3.
- If a floating thumbnail appears, click it to open editing tools. Otherwise, find the file on the desktop.
This method includes browser chrome, other windows, the menu bar, and every display area included in the capture. It is useful for documenting a complete desktop state, but it may include information you did not intend to publish.

Capture only part of a website
- Press and release Shift-Command-4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
- Drag around the visible page region you want, then release.
- Press Esc before releasing if you want to cancel.
While dragging, hold Space to move the selection box without changing its dimensions. This is helpful when the selection is the correct size but starts in the wrong place. The selection cannot include content that is currently off-screen; scroll the page and make another capture for a different section.
Capture a browser window or menu
- Open the webpage or menu you want to show. For a menu, leave it expanded.
- Press Shift-Command-4, then press and release Space.
- When the pointer becomes a camera, click the target window or menu.
Hold Option while clicking if you want to omit the window shadow. Window capture is usually cleaner than manually dragging around a browser frame because macOS identifies the window boundary for you. A menu capture records the open menu rather than the entire desktop.
Use the Screenshot app for more control
- Press Shift-Command-5.
- Choose full-screen capture, window capture, or selected-area capture from the control bar.
- Open Options and set the destination, timer, floating-thumbnail behavior, and pointer visibility.
- Click Capture.
The timer is useful when you need to open a menu, move the pointer away, or prepare a hover state before the image is taken. The destination menu can route files away from the desktop. If you prefer to inspect every image first, keep the floating thumbnail enabled; if you are making many captures, disabling it can reduce interruptions. The Screenshot app has been available since macOS Mojave 10.14.
Copy a screenshot instead of saving a file
Add Control to the shortcut to place the result on the clipboard. For example, Control-Shift-Command-3 copies a full-screen capture instead of creating the normal desktop file. You can then paste it directly into Mail, Messages, a document, or an image editor. Apple also supports Control-clicking the floating thumbnail and choosing Save to Clipboard.

Visible screen versus an entire webpage
A website can be much taller than the browser viewport. The standard Mac shortcuts capture the display, a selected display rectangle, or a window/menu; Apple’s instructions do not describe a built-in shortcut that automatically scrolls through a page and joins every section into one image.
If you need a record rather than an image
Safari provides a different workflow under File > Save As. Choose Web Archive to save webpage graphics and links, subject to the continued availability of destination pages, or choose Page Source to save the HTML. These are webpage-preservation formats, not screenshot images, and some webpages may prevent saving items displayed on the page. Apple’s Safari instructions are at Save part or all of a webpage in Safari on Mac.
If you need one image of the full page
Use a browser feature or service that explicitly supports full-page capture. Check the resulting image for lazy-loaded sections, cookie dialogs, sticky headers, and content that appears only after scrolling. A normal screen capture cannot prove that material below the fold was included.
macOS version and app limitations
- On supported Macs using macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot can offer SDR (Most Compatible) as PNG or HDR as HEIF. Older systems and unsupported hardware may not show those choices.
- Some apps, including Apple TV, may block screenshots of their windows. This is an application restriction, not a broken keyboard shortcut.
- Keyboard shortcuts can be changed in macOS Keyboard settings. If another utility has claimed a shortcut, assign a different combination or disable the conflict. Apple’s reference is Keyboard shortcuts on your Mac.
Fix common screenshot problems
Nothing happens when you press the shortcut
Press the keys together and release them; do not hold them indefinitely. Try Shift-Command-5. If the control bar does not appear, open Keyboard settings and check that screenshot shortcuts are enabled. A third-party launcher, remapping utility, or remote-desktop session can intercept the combination.

For a region capture, press Esc and redraw the rectangle. Hold Space while dragging to reposition it. For a window capture, make sure the pointer is the camera icon before clicking; otherwise you may still be in crosshair mode.

The screenshot is not on the desktop
Open Shift-Command-5 > Options and check the selected save location. If you used Control, the capture is on the clipboard rather than in a file. A floating thumbnail may also be waiting in the corner of the screen; click it and use its save command.
The webpage is cut off
That is expected when the page extends below the viewport. Scroll to another section and capture it separately, save the page as a Safari Web Archive, or use a full-page capture tool. Do not label a viewport image as a complete-page screenshot.
The page changes before capture
Dismiss cookie notices, newsletter prompts, and chat panels before using a manual shortcut. For timed captures, choose a delay in Shift-Command-5 > Options and use the interval to open the required menu or hover state.
Colors or file compatibility are wrong
If an HDR/HEIF image is not accepted by your destination, choose SDR/PNG where that option is available, or convert the image before uploading. The Tahoe 26 format choices are limited to supported Mac models.

Is a Safari Web Archive interchangeable with a PNG screenshot?
No. A Web Archive preserves webpage resources and links for later viewing, while a PNG, JPEG, or HEIF is a rendered image of what was captured.
Why might an HDR screenshot fail in another app?
HDR captures use HEIF on supported Tahoe 26 systems. If the destination expects a more widely supported format, capture in SDR/PNG instead.
