You can use cURL to send a webpage URL to a screenshot API and save the returned PNG bytes to a file. cURL does not render HTML itself: a browser renderer at the service—or one you operate—must load the page and run its JavaScript first. The exact endpoint, authentication, options, and response format depend on the service.
Save a webpage screenshot as a PNG with cURL
Cloudflare Browser Rendering’s screenshot endpoint accepts a POST request and returns screenshot data that cURL can write to a file. Replace the account ID and API token with your own values:

--output screenshot.pngThe documented endpoint requires a url or an html value. It processes the page’s HTML and JavaScript before capture; its example uses a 1920 × 1080 viewport by default. See Cloudflare Browser Rendering documentation for the service’s current request schema and options.
Check that the file is actually an image
--output screenshot.png saves the response body under that name; the filename alone does not prove it is a PNG. Check the HTTP status and response type, and inspect the file before using it. An API may return JSON on an error, or may return a URL to a hosted image instead of image bytes.

For scripts, add --fail-with-body where supported by your cURL version to make HTTP errors visible, while preserving the response body for diagnosis. Do not treat a failed request’s output as a screenshot.
What the cURL command does—and does not do
cURL is an HTTP client. It submits the screenshot request, authenticates to the API, and saves the HTTP response. The browser rendering work happens at the screenshot service or in a browser renderer you run separately. The renderer opens the page, runs scripts, waits according to the service’s rules, and captures the rendered result.
That distinction matters when a page is blank or incomplete. Changing cURL flags cannot make a remote browser wait for a chart, dismiss a consent dialog, or log into a target website unless the screenshot endpoint exposes the relevant browser controls and you send them in the documented format.
Choose the capture extent and timing
Viewport or full page
A viewport capture records the visible browser area at the chosen dimensions. It is suitable for consistent previews and visual checks. A full-page capture extends beyond the initial viewport to include more of a long page, but can produce a very tall image and may encounter service-specific size limits.

Cloudflare documents viewport dimensions and a fullPage option. HTML/CSS to Image also lists viewport, full-page, and CSS-selector controls. Check the endpoint’s own limits and parameter names rather than assuming one provider’s options work unchanged with another.

Wait for the content you need
Navigation completing does not necessarily mean a JavaScript-heavy page is ready for a useful screenshot. A page can continue loading data, rendering charts, or revealing content after its initial document load. Cloudflare warns that the default load behavior may capture an incomplete result and documents wait strategies such as networkidle0, networkidle2, and waiting for a selector to appear.
Prefer a selector that signals the specific content you need when one exists. Network-idle waits can be unsuitable for pages that keep long-lived network connections open; a service-specific delay can help in some cases, but it is less precise and may add unnecessary wait time. Confirm the available settings in the service documentation.
Improve sharpness with device scale
If text or interface details look pixelated, check the renderer’s device scale factor as well as the viewport size. Cloudflare documents that a larger viewport can look blurry when deviceScaleFactor is too low and shows increasing that setting. A larger scale can also produce a larger output image, so use the smallest dimensions that meet your visual needs.

There are two distinct access checks. The bearer token in the cURL example authenticates your request to Cloudflare’s screenshot API. It does not log the browser into the webpage being captured.
If the target page requires access, Cloudflare documents session cookies, HTTP Basic Auth, and custom authorization headers for the target request. Use the method the target site and screenshot endpoint support. Keep API keys and session credentials out of shared scripts, source control, public logs, and URLs when the service supports header-based authentication. For GET-based screenshot APIs, query parameters may put a key in request logs; ScreenshotEngine’s quickstart recommends POST for server integrations to avoid exposing an API key in the request URL.

Adapt the request to other screenshot services
Do not assume every screenshot API accepts the same HTTP method or returns the same kind of response. For example, HTML/CSS to Image documents a cURL POST to https://hcti.io/v1/image with JSON and format set to png; its described result is a hosted .png URL. In that workflow, cURL receives a URL in the API response rather than necessarily receiving PNG bytes to save directly.
ScreenshotEngine’s quickstart demonstrates a GET-style request and advises using --data-urlencode for parameters, particularly when the target URL contains its own query string or special characters. That encoding guidance is specific to a query-parameter request; follow the chosen service’s documented authentication and request contract.
Before you wire a service into a script, verify these details in its documentation:
- Whether the endpoint uses GET or POST, and the exact URL and authentication method.
- Whether the response body is image bytes, JSON containing a hosted image URL, or an error payload.
- How to request PNG output and whether the service defaults to another format.
- Whether viewport, full-page, element-selector, wait, and authentication controls are available.
- Any output dimensions, page-size limits, timeouts, or usage charges that apply to your account.

The output file contains JSON or an error message
The API may have rejected the request or returned a structured error instead of image bytes. Check the HTTP status and response body, verify the endpoint, credentials, required fields, and format setting, and avoid opening the result as though it were a PNG. Some services document error JSON explicitly; ScreenshotEngine’s quickstart uses --fail-with-body so HTTP errors are surfaced.
The image is blank or the page is only partly rendered
The target may need more time after navigation, or the expected content may depend on JavaScript. Configure a supported wait condition or wait for a selector that appears only once the content is ready. If the page requires a login, supply target-page cookies or credentials using the renderer’s documented mechanism; API authentication alone does not grant access to the site.
The target URL has query parameters
When the endpoint takes the target URL as a GET parameter, encode that parameter instead of concatenating it raw into the request URL. Otherwise, question marks, ampersands, or other special characters in the target can be interpreted as parameters to the screenshot API. ScreenshotEngine recommends cURL’s --data-urlencode for this case. For a JSON POST, use valid JSON and the service’s required content type.

The screenshot looks blurry
Review the viewport dimensions and device scale factor supported by the renderer. Cloudflare specifically documents increasing deviceScaleFactor when a larger viewport looks blurry at a low scale. Recheck the resulting image dimensions and file size after changing it.

The screenshot does not include the entire page or desired element
Confirm that the endpoint supports full-page capture or selector capture and that you sent the option in its documented format. A viewport screenshot will not automatically expand to the full document. Selector controls are not universal, and a selector must match an element that exists when the renderer evaluates it.
The request is slow or times out
Long waits, pages with heavy scripts, and network-dependent content can all delay capture. Use a targeted readiness selector where practical instead of an unnecessarily broad wait, and set realistic client-side timeouts for the endpoint. A cURL timeout does not necessarily cancel work already accepted by a service, so check its job or billing behavior before automatically retrying failed requests.
Managed API or self-hosted renderer?
A managed screenshot API is useful when you want a browser rendered for you without operating the browser infrastructure. A self-hosted renderer gives you control of the deployment, but you own installation, scaling, updates, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Splash is one self-hosted option with local HTTP endpoints; its availability does not change the basic division of work: cURL makes the request, while the renderer produces the screenshot.
Choose based on the system you need to operate, not just the shell command. For either approach, establish how it handles authentication, page readiness, capture dimensions, response type, and failures before relying on it in CI or a production job.
Automate captures safely
- Store API credentials in environment variables or a secrets manager and pass them using the provider’s recommended authentication method.
- Check HTTP status and response content before marking a capture successful.
- Use unique output names when saving repeated captures so parallel runs do not overwrite each other.
- Set the viewport, wait rule, and capture extent explicitly when visual consistency matters.
- Retry only transient failures, with a bounded retry policy; a persistent page error will not be fixed by repeating the same request.
- Track the service’s account usage and response semantics so that a hosted URL, cache hit, or failed capture is handled as intended.

Can cURL take a webpage screenshot by itself?
No. cURL sends the HTTP request and saves the response; a browser renderer must load and capture the webpage.
Why does my PNG output contain JSON?
The service likely returned an error payload or a JSON response containing an image URL. Check its status code and response contract before treating the body as image data.
