What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To capture only one application window, click it and press Alt+Print Screen (also labeled Alt+PrtScn or Alt+PrtScrn). Windows copies the active window to the clipboard; press Ctrl+V in Paint, a document, an email, or another app, then save it. If you want to choose a window visually and edit it before saving, press Windows logo key+Shift+S, choose Window, and select the target window in Snipping Tool.
These procedures are documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The Windows 10 support lifecycle ended on October 14, 2025, but that date did not disable screenshot shortcuts.
Capture the active window with Alt+Print Screen
This is the fastest route when the window you need is already in front and focused. The shortcut captures the currently active window rather than the whole desktop.
- Click the title bar or any empty area inside the window you want.
- Press Alt+Print Screen. On different keyboards the key may read PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn.
- Open Paint or the destination app and press Ctrl+V.
- In Paint, use File > Save as and select PNG, JPEG, or another available format. In an Office document or email, save or send the document after pasting.
Alt+Print Screen places the image in the clipboard; it does not create a file by itself. If another copy operation occurs before you paste, the screenshot is replaced.

If the shortcut does nothing
On some laptops, the Print Screen key shares a key with another function or requires an Fn modifier. Try the keyboard combination shown on your device, such as Fn+Alt+PrtScn, without assuming that every model uses the same arrangement. A missing or combined key does not change the Windows workflow; it changes only how you invoke the key.
Select a window with Snipping Tool
Snipping Tool is better when several windows overlap, when you do not want to activate the target first, or when you need annotation and a saved file immediately. Microsoft documents window, rectangular, freeform, and full-screen snips in its Snipping Tool guide.
- Press Windows logo key+Shift+S. This opens the screen-snipping overlay.
- Choose Window in the toolbar. If that mode is not visible, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and select the window snipping mode there. Toolbar labels can vary with Windows updates.
- Move over the windows shown by the overlay and click the one you want to capture.
- Use the Snipping Tool result to crop or annotate it.
- Choose the Save control or press Ctrl+S, then select a folder, filename, and format.
The capture is also copied to the Snipping Tool window, so you can press Ctrl+C and paste another copy elsewhere. Snipping Tool supports Alt+N to start a new snip in the last-used mode. Optional features such as Perfect Screenshot and Color picker are limited to Copilot+ PCs; neither is required for a window capture.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Best for | How the result is handled | Selection behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alt+Print Screen | Fast capture of the already active window | Copied to the clipboard; paste and save in another app | Captures the focused window only |
| Snipping Tool Window mode | Choosing among several windows or editing before saving | Opens in Snipping Tool, with copy and save controls | You click the window in the overlay |
| Office Screenshot gallery | Putting an open window directly into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook | Inserted into the current Office document | Lists eligible open windows |
Use the shortcut when speed matters. Use Snipping Tool when you need a file, markup, or a deliberate choice. Use the Office gallery when the screenshot belongs directly in an Office document.

Do not confuse single-window capture with full-screen shortcuts
These related keys produce different results:
- Print Screen by itself copies the entire screen to the clipboard.
- Windows logo key+Print Screen captures the entire screen and saves the file in the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures.
- Windows logo key+Shift+S opens the overlay; you must choose Window for a single-window result.
- Alt+Print Screen copies only the active window and does not automatically save a file.
Microsoft lists these destinations and behaviors in its Windows keyboard-shortcuts reference and its window and screen copying guide.
Insert a window directly into an Office document
In supported desktop versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, open the destination document and choose Insert > Screenshot. The gallery shows open program windows that are not minimized to the taskbar. Select a thumbnail to insert it, or choose Screen Clipping for a custom area. Microsoft describes this route in Insert a screenshot or screen clipping.
If the window is minimized, restore it first so it appears in the gallery. For an application that is not eligible for the gallery, capture with Alt+Print Screen or Snipping Tool and paste the result instead.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a web page rather than a local Windows application window, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one HTTP request. It is not a replacement for capturing a private desktop window, but it avoids installing or scripting a browser for URLs you can reach over the web.

ScreenshotNeo accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output and can handle full-page captures with lazy images, a CSS-selected element, dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, PDF paper and page ranges, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, blocked ads and trackers, custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work when switching.
Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. The wrong window was captured
Alt+Print Screen follows focus. Click inside the intended window immediately before pressing the keys. With Snipping Tool, click the correct window thumbnail in the overlay.
The screenshot seems lost
Alt+Print Screen stores the image only in the clipboard. Open Paint or another destination and press Ctrl+V before copying anything else. If you already replaced the clipboard, capture again.
Window mode is missing
Open Snipping Tool from Start and inspect its capture-mode controls. Windows updates can change the overlay layout; select the mode labeled Window rather than assuming the toolbar is identical to another PC.

Look for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn on the keyboard and try the manufacturer’s Fn modifier with Alt. If the hardware has no dedicated legend, Snipping Tool’s Windows+Shift+S route avoids the Print Screen key.

The Office Screenshot gallery does not show an application
Restore the application if it is minimized. The Office gallery lists open windows that are not minimized; otherwise capture the window separately and paste it.
The saved file looks different from the display
Snipping Tool and Paint may offer several formats. PNG is generally appropriate for interface text, while JPEG uses lossy compression. Choose the format in the Save dialog and verify the saved file rather than relying only on the clipboard preview.
Windows version and support considerations
Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s Windows support information. The support date is a lifecycle statement, not a claim that these screenshot functions stopped working. Interface details can differ between updates, but the documented shortcuts and window-selection concept remain the relevant paths.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my keyboard labels the key differently?
Look for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn; those are common legends for the same Print Screen function. Laptop manufacturers may require an Fn modifier.
Can Snipping Tool capture something other than a window?
Yes. Its documented modes include window, rectangular, freeform, and full-screen snips; choose the mode that matches the area you need.
Are Copilot+ PC features required for a normal window screenshot?
No. Microsoft lists Perfect Screenshot and Color picker as hardware-limited extras, not prerequisites for capturing, editing, or saving a window.
