To save what is currently visible inside a scrollable element, locate it with Selenium and call element.screenshot("capture.png"). To create one image containing the div’s entire scrollable contents, move the div’s own scrollTop, capture overlapping frames, and stitch them together; Selenium’s element screenshot method is documented as capturing the current element, not automatically assembling its full scroll height.
Choose the right capture method
A scrollable panel is usually an element with a fixed or limited height and CSS overflow, such as overflow-y: auto. It has its own scroll position, which is distinct from the browser page’s scroll position. The method depends on whether you need the panel as it appears now or all of its hidden content.
| What you need | Method | Result |
|---|---|---|
| The panel as currently rendered | element.screenshot(path) |
A PNG of the current element. Selenium documents this as saving a screenshot of the current element. Selenium WebElement API |
| All content inside a scrollable panel in one tall image | Set the panel’s scrollTop, take successive screenshots, then stitch them with an image library |
A composite assembled from multiple captures; you must manage offsets, overlap, and rendering yourself. |
| A user-like scroll action | Selenium ActionChains wheel actions | Scroll input rather than precise assignment of the panel’s scroll position. Selenium’s wheel actions are documented as Chromium-only and as available since Selenium 4.2. Selenium wheel actions |
For full-panel capture, setting scrollTop through JavaScript is generally the most direct approach: it targets the nested element and lets the script inspect its scrollHeight and clientHeight. Selenium’s execute_script runs JavaScript in the current browsing context and accepts a WebElement as an argument. Selenium WebDriver API
Capture the visible portion
Install Selenium and start a browser driver appropriate to your environment. The example below uses Chrome; Selenium Manager can handle driver setup for supported configurations. Replace the page URL and CSS selector with values for your site.

The element method saves a PNG of the element in its current state. The API also exposes screenshot data as bytes and base64. It does not document automatic compositing of content beyond the visible scroll area, so use the scrolling-and-stitching method below when that is the requirement. Selenium WebElement API
Capture and stitch the full scrollable contents
This example scrolls the panel itself, captures successive positions, and appends the newly exposed portion of each frame. It uses Pillow for image processing (python -m pip install pillow); Selenium must also be installed (python -m pip install selenium). The approach is an implementation using Selenium’s screenshot and script-execution primitives, not a built-in Selenium stitching feature.

The code uses the scroll position difference between frames to decide how much of each later frame is already represented. The final offset is explicitly included, which matters when the total scroll range is not a multiple of the chosen step. A modest overlap helps tolerate rounding at joins; inspect the output for duplicated, missing, or visibly misaligned content.

Wait for the page to finish changing
A short delay is only an example. If the panel loads content in a scroll handler, wait for a known selector or an application-specific condition after each scroll instead of relying on a fixed sleep. Lazy images may load only when they approach the visible area. If images or text are missing in the output, allow their loading and rendering to finish before capturing each frame.

For applications that expose a stable loading marker, Selenium’s explicit waits can check it. Avoid assuming that a fixed delay guarantees network completion: animation, asynchronous requests, and site-specific rendering can take longer or behave differently.
Check scale, sticky elements, and joins
- Scale: the example estimates screenshot-pixel scale from the first frame’s image height and the panel’s CSS client height. Browser zoom, device pixel ratio, borders, or browser behavior may affect dimensions. Confirm that the frames have consistent dimensions and scale before trusting the composite.
- Sticky or fixed content: headers that remain fixed inside the panel can appear repeatedly in each frame. A simple vertical stitch does not remove duplicates or reconstruct obscured content.
- Content that changes while scrolling: live feeds, virtualized lists, and items inserted during capture can shift earlier content. A stitched image may then contain gaps or duplicates. If possible, use a stable page state and verify the captured result.
- Horizontal overflow: this example assembles vertical scrolling only. A panel that also scrolls horizontally needs a second dimension of positions and a corresponding two-dimensional composition strategy.
When to use wheel actions or element interactions
Selenium’s Python ActionChains API includes scroll_to_element and scroll_by_amount. Those methods can be useful when the page responds differently to wheel input than to assigning scrollTop, or when the test needs to exercise user-like scrolling. Check the documented browser support: Selenium’s wheel-action documentation identifies the feature as Chromium-only and dates it from Selenium 4.2. ActionChains API

Ordinary element interactions may scroll an out-of-viewport target into view; Selenium’s interaction documentation describes aligning the target’s bottom with the viewport’s bottom. That behavior can help expose an element for an action, but it does not turn the element screenshot API into a full-container capture. Selenium element interactions
Troubleshooting
NoSuchElementException: confirm the selector in the browser’s developer tools, wait for the panel to be inserted, and check whether it is inside an iframe. Selenium runs scripts in the current browsing context; switch into the relevant frame before finding or scrolling an element there.- Screenshot contains only a small or blank area: verify that the selected element is the scroll container rather than a wrapper or child, that it is displayed, and that the page has finished rendering. Check
clientHeightandscrollHeightin the browser; if they are equal, there is no vertical overflow at that moment. - Only the page moves: the scrollable panel may not be the element found, or it may not yet be interactive. Set
scrollTopon the actual overflow container and read it back withdriver.execute_script("return arguments[0].scrollTop", panel)to confirm that it changed. - Missing content near the bottom: include the final offset
scrollHeight - clientHeightand wait for any content triggered by scrolling. If the application virtualizes rows, only currently rendered rows may exist in the DOM at a given time. - Repeated strips or seams: verify that the offset list is increasing, screenshot dimensions stay consistent, and the crop is based on the change in scroll position. Sticky panel elements may need a custom masking or crop policy.
- Browser or driver startup fails: check that the browser is installed and compatible with the Selenium setup, and inspect the complete driver error. For wheel actions specifically, use a supported Chromium browser as specified by Selenium’s documentation.
Or skip the browser setup

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save the element screenshot as JPEG instead of PNG?
Selenium’s documented WebElement screenshot-to-file method saves a PNG. You can open that PNG with Pillow and save it in another image format if your workflow requires one.
