Use the Walmart API that matches your role—not an automated crawl of Walmart.com. Walmart’s Terms of Use prohibit scraping or data mining without its express prior written consent. Approved affiliate partners can request a catalog feed; Marketplace sellers and solution providers use Marketplace APIs for their own commerce workflows. Neither route gives every developer unrestricted access to Walmart product data.
Choose an authorized route before collecting data
There is no single general-purpose Walmart product-data API for anyone to query. Access, permitted use, and available data depend on your relationship with Walmart and the API product. Identify the job first: displaying products as an approved affiliate, or managing a Marketplace seller or solution-provider workflow.

A proxy, headless browser, low request rate, or ordinary browser-like user agent does not itself grant permission. If your intended use does not fit an approved API program, obtain written authorization before collecting data. The Walmart Marketplace API license also restricts redistribution and competitive use of its materials, and allows Walmart to change limits, availability, or fees.
Use the Affiliate Product Catalog Snapshot API for an approved catalog feed
Walmart I/O describes its affiliate API as a way for approved affiliate partners to advertise Walmart.com products. Feed API access is requested rather than assumed. If your account is eligible and your use is approved, the Product Catalog Snapshot API provides daily catalog snapshots. Confirm that the program and current terms cover your actual site, region, and display or advertising use.

Authenticate with client credentials
The documented flow has two requests: obtain an OAuth bearer token using your affiliate credentials, then send that token with the catalog request. Keep the client secret on your server; do not place it in browser JavaScript, a public repository, or a mobile app. Use HTTPS for both requests.
The documentation describes the identity endpoint but the materials available here do not establish its literal URL or the catalog API’s host. Do not guess either URL. Copy the current endpoint URLs from your Walmart I/O account documentation and supply them as environment variables below. The snippets use placeholders for those account-specific documented URLs and require approved credentials.
cURL example
Set WM_IDENTITY_URL and WM_CATALOG_URL to the exact endpoints shown in your current Walmart I/O documentation. The identity request uses grant_type=client_credentials, client_id, and client_secret, with WM_CONSUMER.ID as a header. The second request sends the returned token as a bearer token.

It will fail until you replace both endpoint placeholders with the exact current URLs supplied to your approved account. Avoid printing or logging the token and secret. If the token request returns an error, inspect the HTTP response and account configuration rather than retrying indefinitely.

This version performs the same two-step flow with requests. Install that package in your environment, set the same five environment variables, and replace the endpoint placeholders with the URLs from your Walmart I/O documentation.

Scope the catalog feed to the data you need
The Product Catalog Snapshot API documentation describes two useful query parameters:
categoryIdrequests a category-specific feed. Use the category identifier provided by Walmart rather than assuming category names or IDs are interchangeable.feedType=catalogincludes Walmart and Marketplace offers. Without that parameter, the documentation says the service returns Walmart offers.
The documented feed behavior is a daily snapshot for categories, not a promise of a live, per-item price or inventory lookup. Treat price and availability as time-sensitive. Your application should record when it obtained a feed, refresh in line with the documented feed behavior and your license, and avoid presenting older values as live facts.
For example, to add documented parameters, append them to the feed request rather than changing the authentication flow. In cURL, add --data-urlencode 'categoryId=YOUR_APPROVED_CATEGORY_ID' --data-urlencode 'feedType=catalog' to the curl -G call. Use only values and filters accepted by the API documentation for your account.

Use Marketplace Item Search for seller catalog lookups
Marketplace Item Search is a different tool for authenticated Marketplace integrations. Walmart documents searches by keyword or identifiers such as UPC, GTIN, EAN, ISBN, and ASIN. It returns published items; the default search returns up to 40 matching items. It is not a substitute for affiliate catalog-feed access, nor is it a general endpoint for crawling every public product page.
Use the Marketplace workflow guide and the endpoint documentation available to your seller or solution-provider account to obtain the current request URL, authentication details, and query syntax. Those literal URL and header details are not established here, so avoid copying an endpoint from an unrelated API version or account. Walmart describes sandbox support in its Marketplace workflow guide; use the sandbox where applicable before connecting a production workflow.

Quotas and retries
Walmart I/O affiliate terms dated 2020 state a limit of 5,000 API calls per day and say higher limits require a written request. Because that figure comes from 2020 terms, confirm the current limit in your partner account before treating it as current. Marketplace terms separately reserve Walmart’s ability to impose or change limits, suspend access, revoke keys, or change API availability.

For temporary network failures or documented rate-limit responses, use bounded retries with exponential backoff and jitter. Do not blindly repeat credential, authorization, or malformed-request failures: correct the account, permissions, or request first. Keep request volume within the limit Walmart currently gives your account.
Token lifetime and credential handling
The Product Catalog Snapshot API example response shows expires_in: 3600, a one-hour lifetime in that example. Do not assume every token will have a permanent or identical lifetime. Read the returned expiry information, keep the token in server-side memory or a protected short-lived store, and obtain a new token when it expires. Never hard-code a token as a durable credential.
Storage and reuse
Cache feeds only as the applicable license permits. Do not redistribute Walmart API materials as a standalone data service, use them to build a competing product, or assume that an API response is free of downstream restrictions. Keep your internal data model able to distinguish a daily snapshot from a current lookup, and preserve the feed retrieval time for decisions that depend on freshness.

Keep the integration compliant
- Get the approval and credentials for the product that matches your role before making requests.
- Keep client secrets private and transmit credentials and bearer tokens only over HTTPS.
- Use affiliate feeds for the approved advertising purpose, and Marketplace APIs for authorized seller or solution-provider workflows.
- Check current terms for call limits, storage, redistribution, fees, and the permitted use of data; these can differ by program and change over time.
- Do not substitute automated public-page scraping for API permission.
