Use StockX’s approved REST API rather than scraping its web pages. StockX provides JSON endpoints for catalog search, selling and order management, but access is not anonymous: you need a StockX account, reviewed developer access, an API key and application credentials. After approval, authenticate with OAuth 2.0, send the bearer token plus the x-api-key header, and design around StockX’s published quotas.
This guide shows the approval and authentication workflow, how to choose product or variant market data, working client patterns in Python, cURL and Node.js, rate-limit handling, legal boundaries and troubleshooting. StockX’s limits and endpoint details can change, so verify the current Developer Portal documentation before deploying.
Does StockX have an API?
Yes. StockX documents an official REST API that returns JSON. Its capability groups are:
- Catalog search: find products and catalog records.
- Selling: create or manage listings where your approved application and account are permitted to do so.
- Order management: view and manage your own active orders and related records.
The API is the appropriate first route for authorized automated retrieval. “Scrape” should not be interpreted as permission to copy HTML, call private browser endpoints or avoid the developer review process.

How do I get StockX API access?
- Create or use a StockX account. You need an account before applying.
- Apply in the StockX Developer Portal. StockX reviews applications; its Getting Started page says review commonly takes 5–7 business days.
- Retrieve the generated API key after approval.
- Create an application and record its credentials. Keep client secrets off repositories, browser code and logs.
- Read the current API reference and agreement. Confirm the endpoint, region, currency and permitted use for your project before making production calls.
Approval is not guaranteed and can be denied or revoked. Treat the API key, client secret, refresh token and access token as production credentials.
Authentication: OAuth 2.0 plus an API key
StockX’s authentication guide describes an OAuth 2.0 Authorization Code flow. The authorization domain is accounts.stockx.com; the API audience is gateway.stockx.com. In the normal sequence:
- Send the user to StockX’s authorization screen with your client ID, redirect URI, requested scopes and the
gateway.stockx.comaudience. - The user signs in and consents.
- Your redirect receives a short-lived authorization code.
- Your server exchanges that code at the token endpoint documented by StockX for an access token and refresh token.
- Call the API with
Authorization: Bearer ACCESS_TOKENandx-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY.
StockX says access tokens expire after 12 hours and can be refreshed. Perform refresh on the server, encrypt stored credentials, and never embed them in a public JavaScript bundle.

Choosing the right StockX data
Start by defining whether you need catalog discovery, live market data, your own listings or your own orders. The API reference exposes market methods at both product and variant levels.

Product and variant figures are not interchangeable. StockX warns that product-level results do not account for seller live asks in exactly the same way as variant-level results. Response fields can vary by region, and currency is a request parameter for product market data. Store the region, currency, product ID, variant ID and retrieval time beside every observation.
Runnable request patterns
The following examples use a documented endpoint path supplied through an environment variable so you do not accidentally rely on an obsolete or private URL. Replace STOCKX_ENDPOINT with the exact path and parameters shown in your Developer Portal.

Market-data details that prevent bad conclusions
Product versus variant
A product-level response aggregates across variants, while a variant response targets one size or other variant. A product’s lowest ask can therefore differ from the lowest ask you see for the variant you intend to buy or analyze.
Region and currency
StockX states that market-data response objects may vary by region. Product market requests accept a currency parameter. Never combine USD observations with another currency or compare regions without labeling both; normalize only when your methodology accounts for exchange rates and the API’s regional semantics.

Pagination and snapshots
Follow the endpoint’s documented pagination fields, persist the cursor or page state, and record a timestamp. If you need a historical series, take permitted periodic snapshots; do not assume the API grants a right to archive unlimited data.

StockX’s API Introduction currently states a maximum of 25,000 requests per 24 hours and one request per second. The daily quota resets at 00:00 UTC, and exceeding a limit produces HTTP 429. StockX also documents batch limits of 500 items per five minutes and 50,000 items per day under the described maximum-usage conditions. These are volatile operational figures; confirm them in the live portal.
- Throttle centrally to one request per second or below, including retries.
- Prefer a documented batch operation over hundreds of individual calls.
- Cache unchanged catalog responses for the period your use case permits.
- On 429, honor any
Retry-Aftervalue, otherwise use exponential backoff with jitter; do not hammer the endpoint. - Monitor daily consumption and stop nonessential jobs before the quota is exhausted.
- Ask Developer Support about an increase if your approved use case requires more. StockX retains discretion to grant or deny increases.

StockX’s API license grants a revocable, limited right to use API data internally in applications that interface with StockX. It requires interaction through published API methods, prohibits working around an explicit API limitation with non-API calls, and bars archiving or reselling StockX data. Access may be denied or revoked.
StockX has also published terms language prohibiting bypassing robot-exclusion headers, robots.txt rules or other measures intended to prevent or restrict access. The cited announcement is historical, so consult the current StockX terms and your agreement for the governing language. Do not bypass approval, defeat bot checks, evade throttling or call undocumented internal endpoints.
Troubleshooting common failures
401 Unauthorized
Usually the access token is missing, expired or malformed. Obtain a fresh token or refresh it, confirm the Bearer prefix and check that the token was issued for the StockX audience.

403 Forbidden
Check that the application was approved, the API key belongs to that application and the requested scope or region is enabled. A 403 is not a reason to switch to private web calls.
429 Too Many Requests
Reduce concurrency, enforce the one-request-per-second ceiling, use batches and back off. Check the UTC quota window and your usage dashboard or API usage response.
Empty or inconsistent market fields
Verify product versus variant selection, region and currency. Save the raw JSON and request metadata so you can distinguish a legitimate regional schema difference from a parsing bug.
Token exchange or redirect errors
Compare the redirect URI character-for-character with the registered application, use the current authorization endpoints from StockX, and keep the exchange on a server. Never print client secrets in an error trace.
Timeouts and transient 5xx responses
Use a finite timeout, retry only idempotent reads with bounded exponential backoff, and record a request ID if StockX supplies one. Do not retry state-changing selling or order calls blindly.

- Document your approved StockX application, scopes, region and intended internal use.
- Keep secrets server-side and rotate them when staff or systems change.
- Label every record with endpoint, product or variant ID, currency, region and timestamp.
- Implement pagination, throttling, bounded retries and 429 handling before production.
- Review the current API license and terms before archiving, displaying or sharing data.
- Recheck quotas, token lifetime and response schemas whenever StockX updates its Developer Portal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is StockX API access free and open to everyone?
No. StockX requires an account and reviewed developer access. Approval, credentials, scopes and permitted uses are controlled by StockX.
Can I use the API to build a public historical price database?
Do not assume so. The API license described by StockX limits data to internal use, prohibits archiving and reselling, and your approved agreement governs the actual permission.
Should I query a product or a variant for a size-specific price?
Use the variant-level market method for a specific size or variant; product-level data aggregates across variants and can produce different bid/ask values.
